Rider (ライダー, Raidā?) is a Rider-class Servant able to be summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile
Identity
Rider's True Name is MarthaWP (マルタWP, Maruta?, Saint Martha) the Dragon Rider (ドラゴンライダー, Doragon Raidā?). A saint of the 1st CenturyWP who suppressed the evil dragon Tarasque. A holy maiden who made a terrible and grotesque monster fall madly in love.[2][1]
History
Guided by the words of the MessiahWP, whom she warmly welcomed with her younger brother and sister, Martha became a person of faith. She did not abandon her faith even later on after the Messiah was executed, further avoiding death as she was exiled by the Roman viceroy at the time and was placed in a boat with neither a paddle or a sail to use, and drifted to southern France upon receiving the grace of God.[2][1]
At the town of Nerluc, which was located ahead of her as she went north along the Rhône RiverWP, she ended up confronting the monster Tarasque, who was also called the child of LeviathanWP and was viewed as a tyrannical dragon tormenting the people.[2][1] Martha was not afraid of this monster and suppressed it with discipline carried out through her sacred powers. Afterwards, Nerluc changed its name to “TarasconWP”, and it is currently prospering as a city that enshrines Saint Martha and Tarasque.[1]
Although there are various opinions on the details of how Tarasque was suppressed, from the scene back in Martha’s lifetime, Tarasque wears an expression similar to one that can’t be managed, but within Fate/Grand Order, Tarasque always appears to be sad; one can presume that what this matter in question is, is domestic violence done to a degree.[1]
Appearance
A perfect person, endowed with beauty and overflowing with charm.[2] She is a beautiful saint.[1]
Saint Martha has blue eyes and long purple hair, reaching below her waist, with a white, golden-frilled, short veil around her head. She wears a pair of blue earrings on each ear. A short, blue cloak draped over her shoulders is connected to a red collar. Her main piece of clothing is an unnatural one-piece, white dress with red trimmings, with wide sleeves, revealing its interior gray colors and rose-vine pattern. The dress is low cut, with an exposed trim-like section down the middle all the way down to her navel. In the skirt, it is split apart in two points, exposing her legs. A black belt is tied around her waist, connected to a golden ornament by the right hip, which drapes over the remainder of the belt all the way down to her ankles. In addition, Martha wears blue stockings, a set of green and golden gauntlets and grieves, and high-heeled sandals.
She holds in her right hand her signature staff: a golden pole with pink strips tied around it and with a silver and purple cross at the very top.
In her second Ascension, her cloak changes to red with golden crosses and a chain mail section. The veil is replaced by a set of long, white ribbons tied to both sides of her head, and a new golden ornament appears on her left hip, with yet another belt tied around her waist connecting to it. Her gauntlets are replaced by a silver, more bulkier set, and similar armor pieces are attached to her grieves and feet.
In her third Ascension, the golden pieces and belts are removed, and the sleeves replaced by elbow armor. The blue stockings are swapped out by french raspberry ones. The cloths attached to her hips and new set of gloves are of the same color. Said clothes possess white trimmings and crosses. The front section of her dress was removed entirely. The color pattern of her staff changed, the silver and gold were swapped around and the strips went from pink to purple, matching her hair.
Personality
The woman’s exterior is that of a perfect holy saint. The woman’s interior is also that of a perfect holy saint.[1] A perfect saint both on the outside and in the inside.[2] Perhaps due to the existence of her younger sister, Martha basically displays the words and actions of an elder sister-like behaviour frequently. Kind, chaste, gentle————The saint that is flawlessly radiant.[2][1] A woman who is reliable, tender on top of that, and holds an indomitable spirit. If she can say, “I’m okay”, her companions will believe that she’s truly okay, no matter what kind of predicament happens, and even if she is getting back onto her feet. Even when everybody receives an attack, and even with a monster raging around, they will embrace that sanctity. The perfect holy maiden.[1]
Although then however————to her companions who she can particularly confide in, Martha displays a different facial expression as a saint; especially around those she grew close to, she may come to show a “Martha who is not a saint.” During that, as the “Martha who is not a saint”, her words, gaze and facial expressions suddenly turn sharp, the atmosphere around her becomes unyielding, and she becomes dynamic and determined right after.[2][1] This happens when she is also doing things such as sulking, getting angry, or unconsciously getting quite irritated at those being dangerous. But she will control no more than her bare-knuckle brawling. Given that she received her cross staff from “Him”.[1]
This face shown to her close companions, from the figure of herself in those days as “the town girl who lived together with her younger brother and sister before He had passed by” and from before she ended up as a saint, is also a form of Martha that comes from her trust, as one who displays a kind of dependence on others.[2][1] Although she is a genuine saint, this persona is a little extreme.[1]
Still, even while displaying such behaviour, Martha's core remains unchanged as that of a saint.[2] Even though it is a bit distant from the “image of a perfect saint”, her charm that captivates everybody, her indomitable spirit and belief that guides and protects each single person, her love for people, and so on, are all fundamentally constant with her saintly essence.[1] Nevertheless, the point is, the difference is whether her filter is ON or OFF.[2][1]
Saint Martha has nothing to wish for on the Holy Grail that does not belong to the Messiah’s. Similarly, like the times of before, she will live as a saint even after she had materialized as a Servant. Therefore, she will be cooperative with the activities of the Master. So long as the Master continues to walk on the correct path.[2][1]

Role
Fate/Grand Order
Orleans: Wicked Dragon Hundred Years' War
Martha is summoned by Jeanne Alter to serve as one of her Berserk Servants under designation of Berserk-Rider. They begin a campaign of destruction against France, killing many, particularly King Charles VIIWP and Pierre Cauchon. However, unbeknownst to Jeanne Alter and the others, Martha hid the protector of Lyon, Siegfried, in the town castle after he was left defeated and cursed by Jeanne Alter when he came to destroy the town. Later she, along with the others, encounters Ritsuka, Mash Kyrielight, and Jeanne d'Arc when they came to investigate the recently destroyed La Charite. After the three escape with the help of Marie Antoinette and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jeanne Alter orders Martha to follow and observe them. Martha later confronts the group in their camp at night. Despite her order to only observe, she decides to test their skills. After they defeat her, she thanks them for releasing from madness. Before disappearing, she tells them to go to Lyon where they will find the Dragonslay they need to defeat Jeanne Alter's dragon.
Do Moon Goddesses Dream of Dango?
Traveling with Georgios and Sasaki Kojiro, Martha runs into Marie Antoinette, Chevalier d'Eon and Charles-Henri Sanson, who gives them most of their dumplings as a sign of friendship. Afterwards, she and the others go to the waters of Marseille to pray.
Later, while camping at the shoreline of Marseille, Martha obverses the calmness of ocean waves. After stating that no one wants Georgios' photos, she begins eating the dumplings with him and Kojiro. But Martha soon becomes upset at Kojiro for tagging along with her and Georgios, and asks what his motives are. After Kojiro answers that he seeks a duel with her, Martha refuses, saying that she preaches the folly of battle. She then asks Kojiro why she must fight him, saying she isn't the fighting type, and wonders if Kojiro is actually a samurai. Martha then gets angrier when Kojiro asks about Tarasque, wondering if he's after the dragon. She continues to say that Tarasque's shell is too thick for both Sasaki's sword and her fists, and becomes upsets when Georgios wonders if she fought dragons with her fists before becoming a saint. Ritsuka Fujimaru, Mash Kyrielight and Artemis soon arrive however, with Mash demanding that they surrender. Martha and the others seemingly return the dumplings to the group, but Artemis reveals that they're still hiding some, with Martha hiding some behind her back. With their poor deception unveiled by Artemis, Martha, wanting more dumplings, fights the group with Georgios and Kojiro. After being defeated by the group, Martha reprimands Georgios and Kojiro for pretending to be passed out due to their male pride by knocking the two of them unconscious. Afterwards, she escapes on Tarasque, but not before revealing that her group had given half of their dumplings to a fat man they met in the wasteland.
Miss Almost Weekly Santa Alter
When Julius Caesar came to Jing Ke's hideout, Martha mistakes him for Santa Claus and asks him for a new set of German cooking knives. Caesar instead however, makes her, along with Ushiwakamaru and Jing Ke, to sign a contract that forced them to buy expensive presents with their own money. But when Caesar discovered that they don't have enough money, he confiscates their possessions.
Later, Martha aggressively punches a punching bag while complaining about Christmas. Then, after punching the bag off its chain, she becomes startled when Santa Alter asks her where Jing Ke (calling her Jean Kay) is. Martha welcomes her and Ritsuka Fujimaru to the cave, and tells them to leave after they had their soup. Jing Ke arrives though and asks for Martha to cook some seared beef and sea turtle soup, but Martha instead confronts her about how lazy she's become instead of being her usual gallant self. Then, when Santa Alter reveals herself to be Santa Claus, Martha attacks her along with Jing Ke and Ushiwakamaru. After Santa Alter defeats them, Martha relays to her about their incident with the other Santa. She is then given her present, which will help get her buffed up, but she complains about why a saint would want to get buff.
Chaldea Summer Memories ~White Beach of Solace~
Martha and several other of Ritsuka's Servants are accidentally rayshifted to a remote island where they're unable to contact Chaldea. As the group wonder where they are, she is unable to recognize, but finds the beach nice. The next day, as the group wait to hear from Blackbeard's observation of the island, Martha accuses Sasaki Kojirou of sexual harrasment when he's asking for a duel in a obtuse way. After slaying some giant crabs, the group learn from a near dead Blackbeard that their location is still unknown, and it's nearly impossible to leave by ship. Agreeing with Artoria Pendragon's suggestion to leave the island to contact Chaldea, they decide to build a ship capable of leaving the island. After slaying monsters, the group's Spirit Origins are altered by Scáthach to give them swimsuits in order to accommodate with their current environment. While embrassed by exposing so much skin, Martha decides to temporarily forget her role as a saint given the situation. After more monsters are slain, the group go to gather materials for Scáthach to build their escape ship while also building other facilities.
Later, the group discuss what their first task of island life should be when a storms suddenly rolls in. They enter a small cave spotted by Mordred to escape the rain, but they run out due to a massive swarm of bugs. Outside the cave, the group decide they need to build a cabin to take shelter in. After that is built, the group decide to build a water supply to preserve any fresh water they collect. Martha comments on Kiyohime's suggstion of a wooden well that the wood would rot. She says a well made from brick would be more durable while looking nice. If the brick well is made, she voices her admiration in a rather strange way. She blames it on letting her guard due to wearing swimsuit. She tells Ritsuka how wells were important source of water even in her time, so she find the brick well nostalgic. She suggests naming it after Ritsuka when they suggest naming after her since they dug it. After suggesting to name it after Jacob, Martha wonders if she would've given Jesus water if she was that Samaritan woman. She finds it strange a well on a deserted island would make reminisce about her past. She remarks that she had nothing, but she was nonetheless happy. She explains that since she had nothing to begin with, she appreciated what was granted her. She then decides to draw up some water and drink it with Ritsuka to commemorate the well.
Later, Martha states how food is needless to Servant, saying it's more of a mood stabilizer when Mash says they're low on food. She recognizes it is a problem for Ritsuka though, and asks how they and Mash survived so far. She states they will need to procure their own food after Ritsuka and Mash say they're running low on rations from Chaldea. She explains a lack of food affects not only Ritsuka, but it also lowers their Servants' morale as well. She finds the plants different from those of Bethany, so she isn't sure which ones are safe to eat. She remarks how she used to feed her little brothers a lot of weird things, saying they were mostly fine. She recalls her brothers praying after every meal with tears in their eyes. The look of their face reminded her of how Jesus prayed over mankind's suffering and sins. The three then split to find some food, but only Martha returns with fruit. She accuses Ritsuka of calling her instincts wrong when she merely grins at Mash asking what the fruits are. After Mash becomes worried after closing explaining the fruits, Martha says they won't die instantly at the very least. She suggests spittting out if their tongue feels numb, and the same if their stomach feels strange. She even says she will knock out it of them if they have trouble regurgitating. She then cuts the top of the fruit with her bare hand so Ritsuka and Mash can drink from it. The first one is spicier than habanero, Martha suggests using it for spicing instead. The next one is tasteless with a weird and dry texture. Martha finds it strange since at least one should edible, and wonders if instincts are becoming dull. She asks Mash why she isn't say anything about the last fruit, pretending not to notice the horrible stench from it. Mash answers it is edible but it tastes like soybeans according to Ritsuka. Martha says it's fine since it's still edible, meaning they have more for an emergency. She calls Ritsuka and Mash picky, pointing out how people in the past ate a lot worse.
Tired of barbecue, the group decide to build a proper cooking facility. Martha agrees with Mordred's suggestion of making a giant pot, saying she can make her special Bethanian stew for everyone. If the giant pot is made, she remarks how large meals were commonplace in her household. She even prepared a little extra in case of an unexpected visitor, such Jesus and his disciples. She then notices the stew is done cooking, and hopes everyone will eat it or the large amount made will be pointless. Next, the group decide to build a bathing facility. Martha agrees with Artoria's suggestion of a standard bathing facility, saying they shouldn't forgot modesty just because they're on a deserted island. She calls roman bathing especially sinful, questioning the prospect of men and women bathing together. If the Japanese bath is built, she remarks how the walls and ceilings are solidly built. She apologizes to Artoria for suggesting she test the bath with Ritsuka instead of her, blaming it on roman custom. She then asks Artoria why she picked a Japanese bath when she's the king of Britain. Artoria answers it gives her vague flashbacks of when she was a main heroine to Martha's confusion. She is more confused when Artoria looks around after noticing an illusion of Medusa. Afterwards, the group cultivate a vegetable field. Next, they decide to make a grain field, with Martha suggesting wheat. If wheat is chosen, Martha finds it brings back memories. She decides if she going to hold a sermon over a wheat field, the topic should naturally be wheat. She wonders if she should talk about the Parable of the Tares or the Parable of Wheat. She explains her sudden preaching is because she doesn't have her staff. She feels if she doesn't remind herself of her sainthood, she may not be able to revert back once summer is over. She then yells at Ritsuka for trying to leave when she is about to give an important sermon. Afterwards, the group decide to raise some livestock. If the sheep are chosen, Martha arrives after hearing there were sheep, saying sheep need a shepherd. She wonders if she should hold a sermon on shepherding. She also wonders if it would be appropriate to have David return to his former occupation when Tamamo-no-Mae suggests him. They are both shocked when Artoria said she heard Romulus was a shepherd.
The next night, Martha joins the others in chasing the boar piglet accused of eating their crops. She questions the validity of Fionn mac Cumhaill and Diarmuid Ua Duibhne being killed by boars though. When Anne Bonny and Mary Read recall Cu Chulainn's comment on Diarmuid being killed by a boar, Martha says she finds he looks violent yet he's actually nice. She then accuses Sasaski of not caring for his friends because he wasn't interested in hunting a boar that doesn't clone itself, go back in time, split space, or the like. The group eventually find the boar piglet along two others defending the crops when a demon boar attacks them. Realizing it is the true culprit, the group kill the demon boar. When the boar piglets are contracted to protect the crops afterwards, Martha agrees but thinks to herself that she could eat them if there isn't a choice.
The next day, the group build a pathway to improve their efficiency in material gathering as Artoria suggested. if the railroad track is built, Martha rides the carts alongside Mordred and Anne and Mary. Afterwards, the group build an aqueduct to improve their efficiency in storing water. Then they decide to build a bridge to make travelling easier for Ritsuka. If the ropeway is made, Martha races the cable cars with Mordred and Anne and Mary. Later, She is recruited by Scáthach to investigate something the piglets found with her, Ritsuka, Mash, and Marie. She assumes she wants someone hurt but not killed when Scáthach says she is better suited to task than her, assuming it is one more suited to the fist. She then wonders if it's a holy oil fighting match where weapons are banned, the idea of which excites her. Eventually the group discover a pool of poison the size of a manhole causing all plants in the area to wilt. Martha assumes the approaching monster created the miasma, but Scáthach corrects her that they were merely attracted to it. After the monsters are slain, Martha realizes Scáthach brought it her and purifies the miasma with holy water. The group then follow the boar piglet to even larger pool of poison, which was created by a demon boar bathing in the water. After killing the demon boar, Martha tries to purified, but it proves ineffective. So Scáthach plants ash trees to clean the miasma as they grow. She notes the process takes roughly 1,000 years to complete as rushing it will cause the seeds to wither away from the poison. Assuming the group will encounter more demon boars and poison pools, Scáthach says they need to be dealt with when encountered.
Later, the group make a garden. Afterwards, they construct a play area since playing in the ocean was getting boring according to Marie. Martha tries to deny she enjoys overcoming tough opponents when Scáthach says its a warrior's greatest joy, all the while polishing her gauntlets. If the Coliseum is built, she fights Scáthach in a tournament to determine Ritsuka's top Servant.
Chaldea Heat Odyssey ~Evolving Civilization~
Salomon: The Grand Time Temple
Martha is amongst the "Orleans" Singularity Servants assisting Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.[3]
Interlude
In her first interlude Saint of the Dragon and Sea, Martha, Ritsuka and Mash go to France due to her sensing a distortion on the Marseille coast. While there, she tells the others of her past before Romani Archaman tells them that multiple magical energy signatures have been detected under the sea. After Mash asks if they'll have to dive under the sea, Martha states that she can use Tarasque to guide the swarm of incomplete dragon subspecies to the shore. Swarms of wyverns then appear, but the group slays them all.
in her second interlude The Desired Saint, Martha goes to Rome with Ritsuka and Mash, sensing that something is wrong in that era. The group then proceed to destroy a group of ghosts that suddenly appeared before them. However, a demon then appears, but the group is able to slay it. Afterwards, Martha expresses that even though she perceives her summoning as a Heroic Spirit as unnatural, she believes it was done for the purpose of saving the world, for which she thanks Ritsuka and Mash.
Other appearances
In the manga adaptation of Fate/Apocrypha, Saint Martha made a cameo as a possible Ruler-class Servant.
Abilities
As a Servant, Martha would be accompanied by the monster Tarasque when materializing as a Rider. It is possible for Martha, who materialized as a Rider, to operate all vehicles and beasts freely. In addition, regarding the Dragon Kinds, it should originally not be possible for one to manage them with the Riding Skill, but it is possible for Martha to exceptionally ride them.[1] A Rider that can exceptionally mount the Dragon Kind.[2]
Martha can perform distant attacks through her prayers (magical attacks). She can deliver damage to the target by praying on her lengthy cross staff that she carries, of which it can be visibly seen as a spear. This is not with something that causes an impact or violently explodes because of a fireball or an energy wave flying through the air, but an attack where after Martha’s cross staff starts to shine, the target will automatically emit a magical light and “explode” or “burst apart”. There is almost never the course for that, but those results can be generated.[1]
As a fellow traveller in the Messiah’s journey, and as the saint who suppressed the evil dragon Tarasque, the child of Leviathan, Martha became a subject of worship and reverence.[1] Because of this, she has the Divinity Skill at Rank C.
Martha's Miracle Skill can make a miracle that occasionally makes the impossible possible. Although a part of this has similarities with the Skill Pioneer of the Stars, it is something essentially different. There are also differences regarding the things this can be applied to.[2][1]
Having drifted on board a boat and reined in the Tarasque by the Rhône’s riverbank, Martha has deep connections to water.[1][4] The Saint of the Waterside (水辺の聖女, Mizube no Seijo?) Skill represents this aspect. Upon perceiving a waterside, Martha’s attack power rises.[1][4]
Forms and Alternate Versions
Swimsuit
« Apart from that, I won’t allow a slacken lifestyle just because it is summer! » |
(Martha) |
Brandishing an iron fist, she breaks steel. With a single attack of her strong fist, she pierces even a dragon. With the words of the Messiah (that person) carried in her heart, even now, her vow as a Saint has not been forgotten.[4][6]
« ————This body surely exists for the sake of the people. » |
(Martha) |
Since she lost the holy garments and holy staff to manifest in a swimsuit, Martha has no other choice but to stop conflict with her bare hands. This cannot be helped. It is not conflict. It is mediation. The holy woman finally ended up being released empty-handed... a dragon-slayer (unarmed)... and the likes that must not be mentioned.[4]
Even if there are some changes in her words, and even if her form has changed, Martha is still herself. Nothing but a perfect holy woman saving mankind and the world. However, in any event, it is a special materialization. As she says, this is the Lord’s trial, or is it?————[6]
Personality
It should be as usual, but… as a matter of fact, Martha's state of being has become somewhat anxious given that she does not carry her cross.[6] Because of that, it is possible to catch glimpses of the signs of “those times” from before she held the holy staff appearing and disappearing. When compared to her materialization as a Rider, the frequency is somewhat higher.[4][6] For the person herself who has such manners, the way she loses her bearings is unconcealable, even though she has a feeling where she is not sure if this is the Lord’s trial.[6]
Judging from appearances, Martha is the usual self. However, it is also a matter of time before she becomes serious in accepting everything from the Master and without any help from others since in this way, the Master begins to appear as her “younger brother”.[6]
Even if things turn for the worse, Martha will not be wishing on the Holy Grail to return to her original Saint Graph. Even if her Saint Graph is altered, there is only one Holy Grail as far as Saint Martha is concerned, and she will not be misled by a fake Holy Grail too. That is her foregoing thought.[6]
Relationships
"Jacob, Moses, please greatly forgive me for swinging my fist. I believe this is also undoubtedly a step to take for the sake of saving the Human Order."[6]
Beowulf / Li Shuwen / Assassin of Shinjuku
"I did not say something like, 'That’s just fine, bring it on!' I did not say that. Since I did not say that, please do not send your looks of anticipation for such a behaviour from me. Haaa…"[6]
MaryWP
"Younger sister. This form, I cannot show it to you!"[6]
Abilities
Martha uses hand-to-hand combat attacks. Basically unarmed. If anything, she has the Holy Knuckles armaments equipped on her third stage Ascension. “Even though I want to be a Saint, why!?” She says as the person herself seemingly complains.
Martha’s body, which was undressed from holy garments, is perfect as a living being. It’s amazing when undressed. Her Natural Body (Sea) (天性の肉体(海), Tensei no Nikutai (Umi)?) is a Skill that denotes the absoluteness of the body, but it also functions as a fascination Skill towards others.[4][6]
Jacob's Limbs (ヤコブの手足, Yakobu no Teashi?) is an old method of hand-to-hand combat that was continuously inherited from JacobWP, to Moses, and finally to Martha. If reached to its limits, one can triumph even over an archangel. According to legends, a saint who mastered this can surely beat an “angel of destruction” that leads 12,000 angels to death. In addition, the reason why Martha can bring out “that sort of behaviour” when releasing the True Name of her Noble Phantasm is surely because of this Skill.[4][6]
Development
Creation and Conception
Mineji Sakamoto is the character illustrator for Saint Martha.[1][2][5][4][6] Hikaru Sakurai is the scenario writer for her character.[1][5][4][6]
Comments from Illustrator
"Its shape is distorted by her breasts so it is hard to comprehend, but the exposed section of her torso is in the shape of a cross."[1]
"There was a suggestion to have a facial expression of the so-called 'embarrassed laugh followed by sticking out her tongue' look, and it is nice that it came out OK."[6] (Swimsuit Ver.)
