Background[]

Two centuries ago, the Tohsaka House, in collaboration with the estates of Makiri and Einzbern, helped found the Fuyuki Holy Grail Wars. The land of Fuyuki City, which possessed the second greatest spiritual power in all Japan, was owned by Rin's ancestor, Nagato Tohsaka; at the behest of the Einzberns, he provided his property as battleground for present and future wars. Nagato was a kirishitanWP, as well as a pupil of Zelretch; these titles gave him considerable influence in both the Mage's Association and the Holy Church, allowing the Tohsaka family to participate in the Holy Grail Wars, free from harassment by either organization.[14]

Rin was brought up as the successor to her family's magecraft, and was instructed by her father to prioritize magecraft over her own interests. Ten years ago, Tokiomi Tohsaka was selected as a Master in the 4th Holy Grail War, and Rin was entrusted to take care of the Tohsaka estate until his return. Her mother, Aoi Tohsaka, was left in a debilitated state from the war, so her care was left to her guardian, Kirei Kotomine. After her father was killed, Rin continued to improve her sorcery with some guidance from Kirei Kotomine. She also had a maid working since back when her father was alive, but left when Rin entered middle school, leaving her uniform behind.[15] To divert attention from her private life, Rin has diligently strived to earn the admiration of her peers, even though she is secretly stingy, tomboyish, and a perfectionist. The rights to the Tohsaka lands were inherited by Aoi after Tokiomi's death, and subsequently inherited by Rin after Aoi's death. Kirei managed them as Rin's guardian, and because of his foolhardy and coarse management, the majority of profitable properties ended up in the hands of others. It is possible that he believed the wealth was bad for her upbringing due to following the principles of humility and poverty.[16]

Although Rin resents the sacrifices she has endured for the sake of tradition, she is fiercely competitive and eager to prove herself as a skilled and capable magus. She was immensely disappointed at summoning Archer and ended up in a quarrel with him; however, the duo soon reconciled, set aside their differences and quickly got along.

Appearance[]

Rin is a young woman with aqua eyes and long wavy black hair in a two-side-up hairstyle, which consists of part of her being made into twin tails tied with black ribbons, while the majority hangs loose. During school, she wears the standard Homurahara uniform, which she sometimes accompanies with a long red coat. Her casual clothing consists of a red turtleneck, a black skirt and long black stockings under brown leather flats.

When she was young, she did her hair up in twin tails entirely, and her clothing consisted of a white shirt with a red necktie, a red skirt and long black socks, much like when she becomes older. In the fifth Holy Grail War, she prepared a plain skirt and shirt for Saber, though it was originally a birthday present from Kirei.[17]

As an adult, she put down her hair. Two years after the Heaven's Feel route ending, she wears a long sleeve red shirt and a long maroon skirt. Her alternative costume is a long red jacket, a white polo neck jumper, a black mini skirt and long leather boots.

Personality[]

Rin is a perceptive, serious, resourceful, and very competitive person. Though she is widely admired at school as a prim and proper honor student, it is a front she puts up in order to prevent others from prying into her life. In private, she is notably loud, shrewd, stingy, and bossy but usually means well for those she cares about. She is known as a model student and idol of her school. Her manner of speech is often hostile and dismissive of other people, but deep down she has a caring, big-sisterly disposition. Her tendency of making trivial mistakes at the worst possible moment is a hereditary curse. Though she really is a lot nicer than she seems, she claims to always make her decisions based on cold, rational logic in the end. In her own words, it's "not a very cute personality". In fact, her choice in personal clothes is probably an overreaction to that.[18] Despite claiming that she would do anything in order to win the Holy Grail War, no matter how underhanded, she has a deeply rooted sense of honor, seen refusing to dispose of Shirou despite numerous easy chances of doing so, simply because she owes him and deem disposing of him without clearing her debts to be cheap. In short, Rin is a tough, fiery, perceptive, judicious, mischievous, and considerably aggressive tsundere who shows both sides of the trope.

During her childhood, she understood the Fourth Holy Grail War about as much as Shirou understands the Fifth, seemingly understanding while not actually comprehending it. She saw her father as a great magus who must be respected and loved, but failed to understand the negative aspect of his personality, the coldheartedness that accompanied such an ideal. If he had lived until Rin could actually understand his personality, it is likely that it would have greatly affected the development of her own personality. It is unknown if she would have opposed such inhumanity and left the path of a magus, or if she would have become a “perfect and coldhearted” magus like her father. Either fate for Rin would have been one far away from happiness.[19] Due to Tokiomi's early and untimely death, she was not aware of the original goal of the Holy Grail War to open a “hole” beyond the World.[20]

For the sake of her deceased father and her family's name, Rin seeks to obtain the Holy Grail, though she has little personal desire for it. Unbeknownst to her sister Sakura, Rin feels guilty and believes that she has abandoned Sakura after she is adopted into the Matou household, so much the guilt was what driven her to revive Shirou, Sakura's target of affection, at the brink of death. While Rin eventually admits that she has always watched Sakura from afar, she never realized how much Sakura suffered under the Matou and fooled herself into thinking Sakura was happy to alleviate her own guilt.

She spent just as much time quarrelling with Shirou as she did cooperating with him. She's a mischievous girl at heart, so she loves teasing serious people such as Shirou.[18] However, Rin did want to kill him when she saw his Gradation Air in his shed, thinking that he lied to her.[21] Although she claimed to be not interested in anyone, the Heaven's Feel scenario revealed that Rin has been attracted to Shirou after witnessing his stubborn attempts to finish a high jump that he had no chance of finishing when they were younger. Rin was very supportive of Shirou's relationship with Saber in the Fate route. In the Unlimited Blade Works, they became aware of their mutual crush and attraction which developed to love. In Heaven's Feel, Rin reveals her attraction to Shirou while giving advice for Sakura and their closeness makes Sakura jealous and resentful of Rin.

Her hobbies include admiring jewels.[18] Although wealthy from her family's magical patents, that were crested by Tokiomi, who developed a magic formula that simplified magic, however it is becoming obsolete making Rin receiving less money than before.[22] She feels somewhat ashamed of having to rely on the work of previous generations.[23]

Relationships[]

Shirou Emiya
On the outside, Rin's relationship with Shirou is flippant from being comrades to rivals and vice versa. In the Heaven's Feel scenario, it is revealed that Rin had gained a secret attraction to Shirou after witnessing his stubborn attempts to finish a high jump that no one (not even him) had a chance of finishing when they were younger. In the Unlimited Blade Works (route), they became aware of their mutual attraction which developed into love; especially when they had to team up after Archer's betrayal. At the True End of the route, the two would officially start a romantic relationship and eventually move to London where he becomes her assistant at the Mage's Association.[24]
Archer
Rin is initially dissatisfied with Archer since he is not a Saber and he apparently doesn't remember who he is. She is still able to work well with him as a team. They disagree most on Rin's alliance with Shirou and it is only in the manga and Unlimited Blade Works (route) that Rin finds out who Archer is and why he detests Shirou. It is also in this route in which Archer betrays Rin just for a chance to fight Shirou. Rin is initially frustrated with Archer, but comes to care for him as her Servant and promises she will prevent Shirou from suffering a tragic future like Archer. Rin always sheds tears upon Archer's death. In Fate/EXTRA, No Name is familiar with Rin and this complicates his relationship with Rin's look-a-like.
Kirei Kotomine
Rin had disliked and felt distrust towards Kotomine since childhood. Under his care and tutelage, Rin had to rely on Kotomine for guidance and seemed to accept him enough to learn bajiquan from him. However, she continued to resent Kotomine and always suspected him of doing bad things. She was also one of the few people to know that Kotomine was far more resilient that many people expected, which is why she did not believe Caster had successfully killed him in the Unlimited Blade Works (route). In that same route, Rin also discovers that Kotomine was her father's murderer and her hatred for him increased.
Sakura Matou
Rin is Sakura's older sister, but the two were forced to live apart by their father, Tokiomi. Rin once had a good relationship with Sakura prior to their separation, evident by a ribbon Sakura always keep. Rin later convinced herself that Sakura was living a happier life with the Matou family than she was living as the Tohsaka family heir, and this delusion blinded her to the knowledge that Sakura was only barely keeping her own sanity in check due to constant suffering. Rin went as far as to try to preserve Shirou's life for what she thought was entirely Sakura's sake. Rin had also decided that she would kill Sakura in the events of the Holy Grail War if it came down to it. However, ultimately, she could not bring herself to do it and took the blow without harming her.
Saber
Rin had wanted a Saber-class Servant but got Archer instead. Her first meeting with Saber involves nearly getting killed by her while simultaneously becoming stunned by her beauty. Rin generally gets along with Saber in most instances, and they share nearly the same concern for Shirou's reckless selflessness. Rin also enjoys teasing Saber, particularly when it comes to Shirou. In Unlimited Blade Works, she forms a contract with Saber to become her Master in a shared desire to save Shirou. In the Sunny Day ending of the route, she makes Saber into her familiar following the destruction of the Grail, and they live together with Shirou.[25]

Role[]

Fate/Zero[]

« There's gotta be some way I can help! Yeah, I just haven't learned everything I need to know yet. All I have to do is study on my own! »

(Rin wanting to help her father with the Holy Grail War - Fate/Zero, Episode 10)

Rin appears as a minor character in Fate/Zero. She first appeared when Kariya Matou visited her and her mother Aoi. During Kariya and Aoi's conversation, it is revealed that Sakura was sent to the Matou family, an incident which deeply upset Rin and she avoids speaking of it. Shortly before the war begins, Rin's father Tokiomi acquires Kirei Kotomine as a student. Despite her father's confidence in his abilities, Rin is wary of Kotomine, going so far as questioning him to determine if she can trust him to protect her father, and decides she just can't like people like him when he doesn't give her the response she wants to hear. Ironically, Kirei would be the one to murder her father later on.

Throughout the Fourth Grail War, Rin and Aoi reside with Rin's maternal grandparents outside of Fuyuki City for their own personal safety. When children begin disappearing from Fuyuki City as a result of Ryuunosuke Uryuu and Caster kidnapping them, Rin sets out on her own to find one of the missing children, a girl named Kotone whom Rin was friends with. Using her elementary magic skills and a magical compass from her father, Rin's attempt goes awry and she winds up lost and in danger of being attacked by Caster's monsters. Her mother finds her shortly after Rin is saved by Kariya, though Rin fainted soon after seeing the terrible changes to Kariya's face.[26] The anime expands Rin's short adventure, resulting in her meeting Ryuunosuke Uryuu in person and freeing the children he kidnapped. While escaping, she is attacked by Caster's Horror, though she is saved by Kariya. The incident concludes as it did in the novel, where Rin faints and Kariya brings her to a park where Aoi finds them.[27]

When Tokiomi visits his wife and daughter one last time before the conclusion of the war, he presents Rin with a book, as well as advice and encouragement for her to become a powerful magus. The meeting would be the last time Rin ever saw her father before his death. Prior to his demise, Tokiomi arranges for Kotomine Kirei to become her guardian and teacher until she comes of age.

Rin's final appearance occurs in the epilogue of the series, during the funeral of her father. Thanks to Tokiomi's careful preparations, she has already obtained most of her family's crest and has become the next head of the Tohsaka family despite her young age. Rin shows no visible distress at her father's death, even as she is forced to care for her mother, who suffers from brain damage and still believes that Sakura and Tokiomi are with her, leaving Rin to feel lonely within her own home. Kirei, in hopes of eliciting an unhappy reaction from Rin, gives her the Azoth Sword, telling her that her father had given it to him but omitting that he had used it to kill Tokiomi; to Kotomine's secret delight, Rin is overcome with emotion and weeps.

Fate/stay night[]

Rin is the protagonist of the prologue of Fate/stay night, detailing her first three days involved in the 5th Holy Grail War. In her dialogues, she reveals to her Servant Archer that she is only participating in the war out of her own competitive desire to become the winner. She also expresses dissatisfaction with Archer, for she was attempting to summon a Saber-class Servant, though she quickly grows accustomed to him.

After scouting out Fuyuki City, Rin. is caught off-guard at Homurahara Academy by Lancer, who then engages in battle with Archer. This fight is interrupted, however, when Shirou Emiya is discovered and fatally wounded by Lancer; Rin, who felt sympathy for Shirou - and Sakura (in UBW) -, used her family's treasured pendant, which possessed a strong concentration of Mana, to repair his heart.[28] After she returns home, she realizes Lancer will continue to hunt Shirou when he discovers that Shirou is not dead, prompting her to sprint toward Shirou's neighborhood. It is here that she first encountered Saber, and the three Fate/stay night scenarios branch off. In all three scenarios, Rin helps and allies with Shirou.

By the conclusion of the prologue, Rin would have used two Command Spells on Archer; the first is to force him into submission after he acts insubordinately to her after he is summoned. The second is to force him into ethereal form before he is killed by Saber, except for the Unlimited Blade Works path where Shirou uses a Command Spell to stop Saber's attack instead. In all scenarios, her position as protagonist is given to Shirou.

« Look, Saber will disappear if you're killed. If you want to save Saber, think of a way to do so from a safe place...Geez, don't you understand that protecting your Servant with your life is just meaningless? »

(Rin explaining Shirou about Servants - Fate, Day 4)

Rin acts as an advisor to Shirou, dutifully attempting to school him in traditional sorcery in light of his powerful Servant, Saber. Although Shirou's recklessness results in the death of Archer, she bears Shirou no ill-will, though she hides bitterness at her loss of both her Servant and her chance at winning the war. Rin is later badly injured by Kotomine in Shirou's home while trying to protect Illya, though she is saved by the arrival of Shirou before giving him the Azoth Sword which she got from Kotomine as a child ten years prior (which he got from Rin's father and used it to murder him in turn with). Ultimately, she survives and ultimately leaves for London after the war to become a true magus (although she stays in Fuyuki to train in the anime).

Unlimited Blade Works[]

« Yeah, I know. I'll do my best. I'll do my best so that he won't get twisted like you. I'll do my best so that he will be able to like himself...! So you should also... »

(Rin saying her final goodbye to Archer - Unlimited Blade Works, Day 16)

After learning that Shirou is a complete novice, Rin takes him to Kotomine Church and introduces him to Kirei so that he can have the Holy Grail War explained to him, believing she owed him that much. Upon leaving, they are attacked by Ilya and her Servant, Berserker, forcing both teams to work together. The fight leaves Shirou wounded, and Rin helps Saber get him home, staying to make sure his injuries are healed before making to leave. When Shirou tries to thank her, she reminds him that the Holy Grail War is a fight to the death and the next time they meet, it will be as enemies.

The next day, Shirou shows up for school as he normally would and angers Rin, who feels he's ignored her warning. While looking for the source of the school's barrier, she comes across Shirou again. She immediately switches her attention, deciding to make good on her threat on sight. Rin launches her assault, relentlessly pursuing Shirou with the intent to kill him unless he surrenders Saber's Command Spells. She is interrupted at the last moment by the sudden appearance of Rider, who attacks a student. Shirou and Rin promptly team up to drive Rider away and call a truce. Forming an alliance, they begin searching for possible candidates for Rider's Master.

Shirou finds himself whisked away to Ryuudou Temple by Caster, who also wishes to take away his Command Spells. Archer interrupts and saves Shirou while Saber confronts Assassin. It is at this moment that Shirou starts to get even more irritated by Archer, who has looked down on his ideals. Archer then attacks Shirou, but is stopped by Saber and Assassin. While they are fighting at Ryuudou Temple, Rin begins to have dreams about Archer and his past as a hero who was betrayed by his ideals. After she finds out about Archer going to the temple to kill Shirou, Rin apologizes to Shirou for Archer's actions and tells him that she used a Command Spell to order Archer to never attack Shirou.

The following day, Shinji Matou reveals himself as Rider's Master when he has her use Blood Fort Andromeda to attack the school and everyone in it. A second Servant attacks at the same time, and Saber is summoned. While she fights the Servant, who turns out to be Caster, Rin and Shirou fight their way through golems to get to Rider and stop her. They arrive only to find she's already been killed, though Shinji runs away without telling them who killed her.

With Rider defeated, Rin and Shirou's focus shifts to uncovering the identity of Caster's Master, suspecting that it has to be someone else from the school. When it seems that it might be a teacher, Souichirou Kuzuki, Rin takes the lead and plans an ambush to reveal his identity as a Master or not. Since Archer had suggested they ally with Caster instead of Shirou, Rin decides to leave him behind and only bring Shirou and Saber, not wanting Archer to be around Caster and thinking Saber would be more than enough to handle the situation. The plan works initially, confirming Kuzuki's role as Caster's Master, but things quickly sour when he and Caster fight back. Nearly overwhelmed by their combined strength, they are saved only by the surprise of Shirou's projection attacks and Kuzuki's call to retreat rather than fight further. In order to make it easier to plan and strategize, Rin comes to stay at Shirou's house.

In response to a conversation they had the night before that made Rin realize Shirou doesn't do anything for himself and his own enjoyment, Rin takes Shirou on a date packed with fun-filled activities the next day, bringing Saber along. Upon returning home, they find Caster holding Taiga as hostage. When Shirou tries to follow her demands, Caster releases Taiga and strikes Saber with Rule Breaker, transferring Shirou's Command Spells to her. Against her will, Saber is forced to attack Rin and Shirou is stabbed through the shoulder when he tries to protect her. At Saber's urging, Shirou and Rin leave; in the anime, Archer arrives to help them, and with his aid they are able to get away without further incident. With his Command Spells gone, Rin declares that she will fight Kuzuki and Caster with only Archer, despite Shirou's protests.

Shirou follows Rin and witnesses her confronting Kuzuki and Caster in Kotomine Church, their new base of operations. To her shock, Archer suddenly betrays Rin and attacks her. Shirou saves her and, although she is reluctant, she eventually thanks him and accepts his help again. With Archer gone, both decide to ask Ilya and Berserker for their help. Unfortunately, they arrive too late and find that Shinji and Gilgamesh have already killed them. Lancer shows up shortly afterwards, however, with orders to help them take down Caster if they are willing to cooperate together. Out of options, they accept.

They return to the Kotomine Church, where Lancer fights Archer again. Archer admits defeat and retreats into the church. Meanwhile, Shirou and Rin team up to fight Kuzuki and Caster, ending in a stalemate until Rin turns the tables, attacking Caster not with magecraft but Martial Arts, and nearly killing her.[29] Kuzuki prevents her from delivering the final blow, and Caster tries to use a spell to completely dominate Saber and send her against Shirou and Rin. But before she can, Archer arrives and attacks Kuzuki, killing Caster when she takes the strike for him.

Even with both of them defeated, Archer is still not on their side, however, and he reveals his true motives and intent to kill Shirou. Rin makes a new contract with Saber, thereby making her Saber's Master, to stop him. Archer then kidnaps Rin and takes her as a hostage to Einzbern Castle. There, Shinji tries to rape her, despite her warnings that he is just being manipulated. Further, Kirei arrives and reveals his plot to kill Rin and turn her body into the vessel for the Lesser Grail, finally revealing to Rin's fury that he murdered her father as well. She is ultimately rescued by Lancer, who kills Kirei and drives off Shinji before dying himself.

Rin makes her way out of the basement and to the upper hall of the castle just in time to see the conclusion of Archer and Shirou's fight. Moments later, Gilgamesh appears and attempts to kill Shirou and Archer both. Archer saves Shirou by pushing him out of the way, falling under the full assault of Gilgamesh's attack and disappearing before Rin's eyes, much to her grief. Gilgamesh reveals the true nature of the Grail to her, Shirou, and Saber, along with his plans to use it to eradicate mankind.

Shirou, Rin and Saber go back to the Emiya household to make a plan to stop Gilgamesh and deal with the Grail. After giving Shirou enough mana to access his Reality Marble, they set out and reach Gilgamesh's new hideout, Ryuudou Temple. Rin saves Shinji, who had been used as the Grail's core, fighting off its manifested curses and attempts to pull him back in, even as it tried to swallow them in a mass of flesh. Upon escaping, Rin uses her final Command Spell to order Saber to destroy the Grail.

Meanwhile, Shirou successfully defeats Gilgamesh. However, Gilgamesh tries one last time to make him the new incarnation of the Holy Grail. Fortunately, Archer, who also appeared to help Rin at the same time, comes to Shirou's aid. Rin bids her Servant goodbye as Archer tells her to take care of his younger self, hoping that her care for Shirou will change the future and grant his wish to save Shirou from his ideals. In the end, Rin finally sees Archer with a genuine smile, the same one as Shirou's.

Rin's True Ending.

In Rin's True Ending, she heads off to the Mage's Association after she graduates, and asks Shirou if he would be willing to travel with her to London as her apprentice so they can stay together and she can watch over him, though they both know he would say yes. Its also established in this ending that they have officially entered into a romantic relationship following the end of the 5th Grail War.[24]

In Rin's Good Ending, she keeps Saber as her Servant, and Rin and Shirou live a normal happy life as a couple. Rin is the Winner of the 5th Grail War in this route.[25]

Heaven's Feel[]

« Geez, I'm stupid....Yeah, it can't be helped. I can't ignore a slouch. I like orderly schemes, and it irritates me when people aren't repaid for their efforts. I like you, Sakura. I've always watched you, and I wanted you to smile....Yeah. I wanted to believe that you had it better the more I suffered. I was so preoccupied with that, so I didn't even have time to think about if it was painful or not. I'm sorry I'm a selfish sister....And thanks. I'm glad you always wore that ribbon. »

(Rin failing to kill Dark Sakura - Heaven's Feel, Day 16)

In the "Heaven's Feel" scenario, Rin reveals to Shirou that Sakura is actually her biological sister who was adopted into the Matou family. Despite her cold words that Sakura must be killed to prevent the Shadow inside her from killing more people, Rin is actually reluctant to kill her sister. In the climax of the route, Rin uses the Jeweled Sword Zelretch to fight Sakura; during the fight, the sisters are finally able to admit how they truly feel towards one another. Though Rin is stabbed, Sakura realizes her sister's love for her and manages to regain control of herself long enough for Shirou to trace Rule Breaker and free her from the Shadow's control.[9] The sisters reconcile in both the Normal and True Ending.[13][30]

Fate/hollow ataraxia[]

FateHollowAtaraxia094

Rin in Fate/hollow ataraxia.

In the beginning of the game, Rin is away to London to appear before the Mage's Association in a court hearing, for her experiments with Second Magic in the Einzbern Castle.[31] She asked Archer to 'guard' the city in her place.

After Sakura sends a letter to Rin (in which Shirou also asked for Rin's help inside),[32] she suddenly returns to Fuyuki. She is the first person that helps Shirou with his suspicion of the 4-day loop.

In the final loop, she and Archer fight together in the Fuyuki bridge to stop the horde of shadows from reaching Shirou/Avenger.[33]

In her Eclipse scenario, Beginners, Rin invites Shirou into her home to escape the rain. As they are both alone in an empty house, they decide to have sex. Rin establishes "rules" to control the safety of their intercourse, but clearly uncomfortable, the mood quickly gets off to a sour start. But Shirou, learning from their previous failures where he got too rough or carried away, becomes determined to make this a pleasant experience for her. Rin's response to the foreplay is immediately positive, with Shirou taking his time to get her into it.[34]

His tenderness eventually breaks past her barriers, and uncovers the misplaced fears Rin had that made her too nervous and tense to enjoy their sex in the past. This results in a heart-to-heart that only brings them closer, the mood dramatically improved as they move onto making love. Enjoying it like never before, Rin becomes mushy, confessing her love to Shirou again and again whilst breaking all of her own rules. Upon breaking the last one - the most important one - Shirou fears unwanted conception and Rin's anger turned at him, but is surprised by a fully positive and loving reaction from her. No longer caring about anything else from then on, the happy couple embrace each other, sleeping side by side until the morning. Shirou wakes Rin with affectionate kisses, which she returns, before dashing off to make breakfast and hoping to share more tranquil mornings like these together in their future.[34]
This side story is implied to take place after Rin's True Ending.

The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II[]

Rin El-Melloi

20-year-old Rin in The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II.

Rin is around 20 years old in The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II and now a full-time student of the Clock Tower. Shirou came to London with her.[35]

With former troublemakers Svin and Flat being separated after Svin's graduation, Rin has become the new cause of chaos in the El-Melloi Classroom.[2] In addition to Lord El-Melloi II's Modern Magecraft classes, Rin also takes classes in the Mineralogy department.

The Man Who Devoured God[]

Rin traveled to Singapore for her summer vacation away from the Clock Tower. While in Singapore Rin used magecraft to find the locations of sunken ships, rallied crews to salvage the ships, and then sold what she found. While doing this she came across Ergo drifting in the ocean and called for Lord El-Melloi II to come meet him.[3]

Lord El-Melloi II made sure to keep his apprentice Gray out of the classroom whenever Rin had a class, and so until this meeting in Singapore the two had never met. Rin knew about Gray, and mistakenly thought that Lord El-Melloi II or Gray had something against her when Gray kept avoiding her. When they meet, Rin freezes after getting a look at her due to her resemblance to Saber.[3]

Rin's pirate crew is actually comprised of orphan children. Upon seeing how she has taken them in, Lord El-Melloi II comments on how Shirou is rubbing off on her. When he asks if they are in a relationship Rin is flustered and denies it with "O-of course not! Give me a break!"[36]

The Devil of the Wandering Sea[]

The group travels to Tokyo to find a cure for Ergo's condition. While there, Rin and Ergo run into Bai Ruolong from the Wandering Sea.

Rin feels powerless going up against Servant-level enemies like Wuzhiqi and Bai Ruolong, and laments that she wishes she had the Jeweled Sword Zelretch with her. After talking with El-Melloi II, he comes up with a plan for her to get stronger in a short time, but she calls it insane.[37] Together they develop the Pseudo-Edelsteine technique, where Rin uses Projection to create five gems (one of each Element) so that she has five spells prepared to instantly counter an enemy with a spell of the appropriate Element. Because the Projected gems need to only last for a few seconds, the Magical Energy cost is extremely low. The gems need to only serve as catalysts to polarize her Magical Energy toward a certain element.[38] Rin also reveals that she has developed her own version of Rho Aias, though it costs a year's worth of her savings to use.[39]

Legacy of the Alchemist[]

In Egypt, Rin and Ergo are confronted by Sion Eltnam Sokaris who captures Ergo and uses the god Set inside of him to access the Library of Alexandria.[40] Rin follows them, and the three run into Luviagelita Edelfelt who snuck into the library on her own to plunder it.[41] Rin and Luvia fight Karmaglyph Meluastea Deluc, the Lord of the Department of Mineralogy in which they are both students.[42]

Fem's Casa[]

In Monaco, El-Melloi II's party learns that Shirou recently won a gambling game against the casino owner Van-Fem but left without taking his prize. Van-Fem refuses to let a winner go without their rewards, and in his men's search for Shirou they learned that he had been kidnapped. El-Melloi II tasks Rin and Luvia with looking for him.

While searching Monaco Rin and Luvia encounter Bai Ruolong, who had been sent by Ziz to kidnap Shirou and learn the secret to beating Van-Fem. However Ruo wasn't the one who took Shirou, as the Morte mafia got to him first as he is suspected of killing some of their men.

Fate/strange Fake[]

Rin is first mentioned by Lord-El Melloi II and Flat Escardos when discussing where Flat learned the incantation for Heroic Spirit Summoning.[43] Later, Gray wonders if she couldn't help Lord El-Melloi II in helping Flat survive the True and False Holy Grail Wars. El-Melloi II rejects Gray's suggestion, and says that Rin might storm off to America herself if she is told.[44]

Rin battled Doris Lusendra for the right to control the Rider-class Servant Hippolyta in the True and False Holy Grail Wars. After she won, the Command Spells passed to Verner Caesarmund, one of her classmates in the El-Melloi Classroom.[45] Verner then used his Papilio Magia magecraft to spread the Command Spells among all their classmates, making Rin and roughly thirty of her fellow students of Lord El-Melloi II all shared Masters for Hippolyta.[4] Rin and the rest of the class then traveled to Snowfield after the death of Flat Escardos and the emergence of Thia Escardos.[4]

Dismantling the Greater Grail[]

Ten years after the end of Fifth Holy Grail War, Lord El-Melloi II arrived in Fuyuki and together with the head of the Tohsaka family, Tohsaka Rin, set out to completely take apart the Great Grail.[46][47] The Association was planning on bringing back the Great Grail, so the two sides were completely opposed. After the end of the great turmoil of the same magnitude as the Grail War, the Great Grail was completely dismantled and the Grail Wars of Fuyuki came to a complete conclusion.[46]

Fate/EXTRA series[]

YoungExtraRin

Young Rin playing with a relative who may possibly be Rin Tohsaka.

In the Fate/EXTRA world, Rin shares the name as the Rin Tohsaka that appears in the Moon Cell Holy Grail War. They are different people but they are relatives part of the same lineage. Presumably, Rin is the relative with the face obscured who played with the other Rin when she was a child.

Due to Moon Cell fluctuations in Fate/EXTRA CCC, Rin and Archer appear as an optional boss. Her codecast skills are:

  • One step - Gandr Shoot (一工程・ガンド撃ち, Ichikōtei Gando-uchi?) - Causes magic damage and stun status.
  • Jewel Magecraft - Entire person fortune throw (宝石魔術・全財投人, Hōseki Majutsu Zen Zaitō Hito?) -
  • Seven Colors Crackers (セブンカラーズ・クラッカー, Sebun Karāzu Kurakkā?) - Causes magic damage.

Carnival Phantasm[]

Carnival 04 - 04

Rin in Carnival Phantasm.

« We're finally at the top, so we can't let him ruin it all! »

(Rin trying to stop Gilgamesh from winning the grand prix - Carnival Phantasm, Episode 9)

Rin has an active role in Carnival Phantasm due to being one of the heroines of Fate. Her tsundere personality is comically exaggerated and she seems to be obsessed with winning and having more money than she already has. She is also hopeless with electronics to ridiculous lengths. Her alter-ego is the magical girl Kaleido Ruby.

Today's Menu for Emiya Family[]

Rin makes frequent appearances in Today's Menu for Emiya Family, and occasionally cooks the food featured in an episode. Rin's romantic relationship with Shirou is occasionally noted, as seen in Episode 7.[48]

All Around Type-Moon[]

Rin appears in the manga series All Around Type-Moon. In one chapter, her inability to handle electronics leads her to accidentally summon Nero Claudius directly from the Moon Cell. Later on in the chapter, she also accidentally summons several more characters.

Other appearances[]

She appears in Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA, as a major character. Her counterpart recruits Illya for help.

A parallel world version of TYPE-MOON might tell Rin's story in London.[49] In the Apocrypha timeline, the Tohsaka gave up on the Greater Grail. Rin end up becoming the founder of a "completely new martial arts that combines magecraft and Chinese Kenpou" by the time she becomes a high school student.[50]

In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2008, she is a super heavyweight wrestler star known as the Dynamite Rin (ダイナマイト凛, Dainamaito Rin?) in the T Moon Fighting Spirit (Tムーン 闘魂, T Mūn Tōkon?). She is the boss of the Fate Wrestling Federation and the leader of the IWGP tag team. Rin is a talented woman who leads a western-style puroresu group. After learning fighting techniques and management at GGG. Rin furthered her knowledge in the field. Rin tends to favor strikes instead of throws. While she is skilled, Rin prefers to turn the fights into a simple match of power vs power, turning the spectacle into a royal road of proresu. As someone who knows how to work the crowd with microphone performances. Dynamite Rin represents the best qualities of proresu. Her fight with Great Luvia came to a draw as the Referee Shinji Matou was knocked out by the two fighters powerful drop kicks.

Rin makes an appearance in Fate/Grand Order as a Craft Essence card. She appears as the illustration cover for Gandr (ガンド, Gando?) and Formal Craft (フォーマルクラフト, Fōmaru Kurafuto?), and Jewel Magic Bullet (貴石の魔弾, Takaishi no Mahi?).

Non in-universe appearances[]

Abilities[]

Rin was born capable of manipulating all five great Elements, an extremely rare trait for a Magus. Her potential is such that she will eventually be considered as one of the top one hundred ranking magi throughout the entire history of the Mage's Association.[51] Compared using simple numbers, someone with an abnormally high potential like Ciel is at one hundred, someone who is eternally at apprentice-level like Shirou is at ten, and Rin falls from seventy to one hundred.[51]

As the successor to the Tohsaka family, Rin excels in Conversion of power, which includes storage of Magical Energy in objects,[52][53] typically jewels for Jewel Magecraft, as they are easy targets to transfer Magical Energy into due to being 'places' that easily store people's thoughts.[53][54] Additionally, crystals that have been in the ground for a long time carry strong Natural Spirits.[53][54] She uses them as disposable, limited-function Mystic Codes.[18][52][53][55] Because the amount of Magical Energy a Magus can release at one time is restricted by bodily limitations, giving them unused excess of Magical Energy at the end of the day,[52] Rin has been able to accumulate all of the Magical Energy generated by her body during her seventeen years of lifetime through jewel crystallization,[56] using a syringe to draw out her blood and drip it onto jewels to accomplish the process.[52] As with practicing of magecraft, charging these jewels has become a daily process for her turning them into powerful bullets.[52][55] However, in the end, they are merely disposable items. Because their magecraft reduces expensive jewels to ash after a single use, the Tohsaka Magi are fated to be chronically afflicted with a lack of funds.[57] When Rin's stored power is needed, she can utilize the jewels for an instantaneous release of A-rank magecraft capable of countering a spell from Caster's magecraft from the Age of Gods,[29] or taking one of Berserker's lives by using five jewels.[58][59] Their speed of release is great enough that it can match Caster's High-Speed Divine Words.[29]

When she gets older, Rin is able to take advantage of her Average One status and Jewel Magecraft to be able to imitate Flat Escardos's magical hacking using a giant pentagram with jewels at each end: being an Average One means that, unless her opponent had one of the rare, weird Elements, Rin would be elementally compatible with anything a Magus could have. She has the ideal talent for magecraft hacking, even though she doesn’t have any reliable way to read the opponent’s wavelength and formula yet and needs Lord El-Melloi II to assist her in finding the enemy's data on the Luxcarta.[60] She further evolves as a "counter-based fighter" when she devises the Pseudo-Edelsteine (疑似宝石, Giji Houseki?, lit. "pseudo-gemstone") counter-spell with Lord El-Melloi II's help.[38] She can also use small statues of amethyst in form of Owls (梟, Fukurō?) as familiars for reconnaissance purposes.[61]

Her most common offensive spell is a Finnish technique known as Gandr (ガンド, Gando?), which concentrates Magical Energy into Rin's forefinger, resulting in a hazy black orb to be subsequently fired like a bullet. Originally intended to be a Curse, Rin's variation on Gandr takes on an unusual, corporeal form. Additionally, Rin has bypassed any need for a verbal component to initiate this spell due to having inherited and infused Magic Crest of her family, and she can fire as many Gandr shots in an instant, even set up a barrier and rain them on an opponent if she so chooses. Since Rin's Gandr Shot was particularly violent, capable of punching through and disintegrating a large portion of a concrete wall with just a single shot, it could be considered on the level of Finn Shot, or Finn Gatling Gun.[62]

Rin knows the "popular spells", being able to make a Bounded Field the size of a classroom.[53] Rin is also proficient with Reinforcement magecraft, allowing her to strengthen her legs so much that she can run over one hundred meters in less than seven seconds, fast enough to be perceived as a blur to a regular human.[56] She is also able to use it on herself for a few seconds to deal critical damage to even a Servant like Medea with physical blows in a situation where Rin has her off-guard.[29] She can also make use of one of her jewels for a large amount of protection, and by placing it on her stomach to form a protective cover, she can even last a long duration of time being crushed in Berserker's grip.[63] With two gems protecting her, she can wade through the Mud of the Grail and wading through a lake of fire would be no problem.[64] She can also use Healing Magecraft to a degree, curing a girl who had her Life Force drained by Rider,[65] healing Shirou's dead nerves,[66] and treating her own wound sustained from Kirei,[67] but unable to heal the wound made from Saber running Shirou through.[68] She can also repair Shirou's broken window,[69] hide her presence,[58] and has knowledge of runes.

Rin practices pseudo-karate as a form of self-defense.[29] Her instructor in martial arts is Kirei, and his teaching was responsible for the sequence of moves she used to corner Caster.[18] Thanks to her combat expertise, she is able to do things like sneak up on Gray despite her enhanced senses[70] and throws a punch in 0.2 seconds that might have fractured Shirou's cheekbone. As she gets older, Rin also mixes her martial arts with her use of magecraft, with each and every of her movement having a purpose in adjusting the flow of Od inside her and preparatory steps for an explosive drive on her joints and muscles.[45] And in the alternate World of Fate/Apocrypha, she invents a style of martial arts that combines magecraft and Chinese Kenpou.[50]

While statistically superior to Kirei Kotomine, he would win eighty percent of the time by psychologically exploiting her past traumas to keep her from fighting at her full potential. Even without such knowledge, Kirei would still have a substantial combat advantage over Rin due to possessing over ten years of experience as a professional killer of Magi.[71] If Bazett Fraga McRemitz had been able to participate in the war, she would have ended up being a threat to Rin.[72]

List of spells and incantations[]

Despite being Japanese, all of Rin's incantations are recited in German, because the first head of the family, Nagato Tohsaka, was a pupil of Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg, hence why the family still uses German today.[14] When‌ ‌Rin‌ ‌uses‌ ‌Jewel‌ Magecraft,‌ ‌she‌ ‌uses‌ ‌incantations‌ ‌to‌ ‌designate‌ ‌the‌ ‌gemstone‌ ‌and‌ ‌effect‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌activated.‌[73]

  • Cutting Seven Colors (カッティング・セブンカラーズ, Kattingu Sebun Karāzu?): Rin deploys jewels around her, and simultaneously with her declaring "Anfang" Magical Energy of multiple attributes appears in the space between the gems. The light continuously reflects inside the gems, expanding their Magical Energy. Magical Energy of multiple attributes then shoots forward as several beams.[45] It first appeared as her super move in Fate/unlimited codes, and is Summer Ishtar's Buster attack in Fate/Grand Order.

  • Es ist groß. Es ist klein! Vox, Gott Es Atlas(It is big. It is small! The Voice of God bears the Heavens!): Lightens her body, even to the point of being light as a feather, and adjust gravity.[34][56] Can be shortened to Es ist groß.[34] In the anime adaptation, it is shown to also apply Reinforcement to her legs.[80]
  • Es läßt frei. Eilesalve: Using the Jeweled Sword Zelretch to cast powerful attacks of light able to cut down Dark Sakura's Shadow Giants.[79]
  • Es läßt frei. Werkzeug: Using the Jeweled Sword Zelretch to cast powerful attacks of light able to cut down Dark Sakura's Shadow Giants.[79]
  • Fixierung(Aim), Eile Salve(Volley Fire): Fires Gandr shots without pause over a wide range, like a machine gun.[75]
She unleashes a barrage of jewels (Jewels 5, 3, and 4, as well as a fourth one in synergy) to penetrate Caster's Magical Energy.[29]

  • Gewicht, um zu Verdoppel ung: Used in conjunction with obsidians stones to make silver lights come down from the sky.[81]
Heites Wetter, Regen, Wind, Schnee, Krieg, Ende, ununterbrochen.: Incantation used to transplant part of her Magic Crest to Shirou Emiya.[82]

  • Minuten vor Schweißen(Minutes before Wielding): To repair glass. After reciting the spell, she cuts the tip of her finger and puts a drop of her blood onto the glass.[69]
  • Neun, Acht, Sieben. Stil, schießt Beschießen, Erschießung: Ice spell, creating three giant icicles shaped like spears with enough Magical Energy concentrated in them to blow away a whole mansion, and able to freeze one of Berserker's arms.[59]
  • Open it, Schweirnog. To the place I desire, the way I desire. Here we go, Sesam, offne dich: Used to open Zelretch's Treasure Chest using Magical Ruby.[76]
"pseudo-gemstone") (Pseudo-Edelsteine.(Pseudo-Gemstone) / Fünf Sterne im Umlauf!(Five Stars in Revolution) / Viel Licht braucht polarisierte Gläser(Multi-Layered Polarization Spell Protocol), Verbinden Sie sich mit Ihren Träumen.(Dreamwalking Connect) / Meine Hände halten viele Spiegel(Mirror Realm Domain, Generate)): Pseudo-Edelsteine is a new spell developed by Rin years after the Fifth Holy Grail War. It applies Projection Magecraft to create short-lived gemstones lasting a few seconds expended as catalysts for the purpose of polarizing her Magical Energy. The result is that that she can rapidly and casually cast spells attuned to particular Elemental Affinities, and capable of contending against spells with superior Magical Energy through Advantage, and equivalent in standing to the sort of spells a Brand could cast. It is essentially a trick to fight and defeat opponents beyond her league. Normally, being a dedicated counter-based fighter in the World of Magecraft doesn't work for two reasons, namely options being limited by Elemental Affinities and, even as an Average One, having not enough time to analyze a spell a devise a counter-spell in the time it takes to cast it. Pseudo-Edelsteine solves that by making its circle of temporary gemstones double as both telescope and laser cannon, with the five elemental jewels all preloaded with Rin's spells, so all she needs to do after figuring out what she's against is to quickly swap the lens and pass the metaphorical "light" (Magical Energy) through it. Basically, analyze the enemy's move through the viewing lens, pick an already active option, and respond immediately.[38] The weakness of Fünf Sterne im Umlauf is it works on magecraft that will eventually dissipate. It's powerless against real phenomena connected to the world, like for example Shirou's permanent Projections, the El-Melloi's Volumen Hydragyrum, or just someone running at her with physical force.[45] Rin's mobility is also limited while using it.[42]
The Wind of Boring): Used to cast a wind drill spell through Pseudo-Edelsteine.[38]
    • Die Instrumente wurden gestimmt.(Tuning Disclose) / Gelbe Nummer vier.(Amber Number Four) / Schwerter zerschlagen Blitze!(The Sword That Averts Lightning): Used to cast a lightning rod spell through Pseudo-Edelsteine.[38]
  • Pseudo-Edelsteine.(Pseudo-Gemstone) / Seben, sechs, fünf, spiegel, blume, blühen und stolz sein!(Bloom, seventh, sixth, fifth mirror and flower!): Divides a Gandr bullet into multiple colored ones.[77]
  • Rho Aias (Brennender Himmel(Think upon the Burning Heavens) / Ich kenne den Kreis(That would be as a ring) ; Die Blumen beschützen mich(the Flower doth protect me) ; Der Wächter des alten Schlosses ist unerschütterlich.(the guardian of the ancient castle is unshakeable) / Eine Blume blüht in meinen Händen(the Flower doth bloom by mine hand) ; Aias der Telamonier!(in the name of Aias)): After the Holy Grail War, Rin has devised an imitation of the Noble Phantasm Rho Aias. With a six-verse incantation, it takes the form of a sakuraWP flower with five petals, instead of the seven larkspurWP petals, though it could more appropriately called a canopy than a shield. It's a defensive spell Rin holds in reserve, as it makes use of a year's worth of her savings.[39]
  • Royal Circuit: A spell Rin can use in tandem with Luvia, similar to the magecraft the latter uses with her sister or the magecraft of the Pentel twins. They both cast three jewels into a shared magic circle, turning them into magical energy supplies for each other. By making their gems into external Magic Circuits for each other, hence the name, the two can perfectly analyze each other's spells and choose a spell that adds to what the other built up or covers up the previous composition's shortcomings. In short, power multiplied by positive synergy.[85]
  • Satz.(告げる。) / Beklagter(わが誓約、) meine Wörter werden(我が盟約に従い天秤を) geglaubt.(傾ける。) / Weiß(非は) ist schwarz.(是に。) / Richtige(火は水に) übliche(克が如く、) Peitsche. / Die Vergeltung(衛宮士郎を) vom Himmel(導律せん。): Formula for Rin's Geis contract with Shirou.[86]
  • Schließung. Verfahren Drei: To erect her house's Bounded Field.[55]
  • Sechs. Ein Fluß, ein Halt: An unspecified attack against Caster.[29]
  • Sechs, fünf, vier, Verzehren Sie den Schatz! Vernichten Sie den Schatten des Feindes!(Sixth, fifth, fourth, fire all! Do not spare even one of the enemies’ shadows): Makes rubies explode in powerful explosions, likely as powerful as a rocket-propelled grenade.[83]
  • Sieben: Used with a jewel to block Caster's electrical spell.[29]
  • Stark Groß zwei: Chanted to nullify one of Caster's spell.[29] In the anime adaptation, it is changed to a spell activating a jewel used as a flashbang to blind Caster.[89]
  • Vertrag. Ein neuer Nagel Ein neues Gesetz Ein neues Verbrechen(Contract. A new nail, a new law, a new crime)(I announce to the Command Spell! By the order of the Holy Grail, give the law of obedience to this one, my Servant!): Using one of her Command Spells to force Archer to be obedient.[55]
  • Vier Stil Erschießung: Multiple magical attacks with an impact close to that of a high-caliber pistol.[90]
  • Vierzehn, neun, acht. Drei Schwerter, Synergie, eine Mulde!: Attack spell consisting of superimposed gemstones creating a spiral made of overlapping light. It is said to be the highest amount of power a modern mage could hope for, reaching the realm of forbidden magecraft.[84]
  • Vorbereitung, neunzehn, achtzehn, siebzehn, sechzehn, fünfzehn(Prepare, nineteenth, eighteenth, seventeenth, sixteenth, fifteenth) / Der Schlüssel sind Zahlen. Der Schlüssel ist die Welle. Der Schlüssel sind die fünf Farben(The key is numbers. The key is waves. The key is the five colors) / Die fünf Elemente. Aus Gold wird Blei. Hühner in Eier verwandeln. Drehen, drehen, drehen, drehen, drehen Sie den Kreis rückwärts(O, five elements, turn gold into lead, turn the chicken into an egg. Turn, turn, turn, turn, turn into a circle, reverse!): This spell is Rin's replication of Flat Escardos's magical hacking using her Average One status and Jewel Magecraft. As a result of her unique magecraft affinity, she is elementally compatible with anything a magus could have and thus can interfere with their magecraft, provided she has the assistance of something like Observation Sphere Luxcarta to identify the wavelength and formula of the magecraft. To do so, she needs to it inside a pentacle with her jewels at each of the five points.[60]
  • Welt, Ende(world, end): To have the Jeweled Sword Zelretch self-destruct in an explosion of light powerful enough to destroy Shadow Giants.[91]
  • Neun, Acht, Dornendes Siegels(Nine, Eight, Thorn Seal): Used on Bai Ruolong but nullify by his Magic Resistance. This spell is made especially to counter the mages hunting Ergo down. Rin had used her favorite jewels: a sapphire that used thorns to extract the Magical Energy inside Magi, and a ruby that used the Magical Energy extracted into a binding spell. Combined, they should have been able to neutralize enemies much stronger than herself.[92]

Equipment[]

Inheritance

Tokiomi's inheritance

Rin has inherited everything that belonged to her father, including heirloom jewels, jewels inherited from Zelretch, and the wares and knowledge to manage her workshop, the basement of the Tohsaka household. She originally would have had possession of all the commercialized spiritual lands that brought in more money than most Second Owner families elsewhere, but Kirei's mismanagement as her legal guardian has caused the most valuable properties to have been lost to others.[16] She still obtains royalties from magical patents held by the Tohsaka family, "*0,000,000 yen" annually without including additional revenue, so she can be considered relatively wealthy.[23] She obtains jewels for her craft through exclusive channels used by her family, leaving her each day wondering "whether she could've gotten a better price from the buyer if she had just become friends with that lady."[54]

In preparation for the Fifth Holy Grail War, Tokiomi left her a special inheritance in his will that requires her to solve a special puzzle to find and open a box of his effects. The most prominent items are a pendant and the catalyst, having been smashed at some point in time, he had used to summon Gilgamesh.[80] Opening it also causes all the clocks in the household to immediately become set one hour fast as a bit of playfulness as if to say, “if she can’t even notice a slip-up as trivial and close to home as this, it’s too soon for her to fight in the Holy Grail War.”[93]

Compass[]

When she was younger, Rin was gifted a magecraft compass (魔力計, translated as "Mana Gauge" for the Craft Essence in FGO North American version?) by her father on her birthday. It looks like an ordinary compass from its shape and structure, but it doesn't point towards the north, instead pointing towards the direction where strong amounts of Magical Energy emanate out instead. She uses it to locate places with high-mana footprints in order to find her disappeared friend Kotone.[26] Even years later, she still uses it, albeit one she made herself from scratch.[94][95]

Jeweled Sword of Zelretch[]

Jewels[]

Rin buys a variety of jewels, and those she utilizes in combat can reach prices of 500,000 yen each. Those that are made of crystals that are naturally able to easily store mana are made of precious metals and come with a very high price.[54] She usually visits high-class pawn shops in the shopping district's back alleys for old gems that have been released by their former owners.[96] As of the beginning of Fate/stay night, her savings consists of twenty jewels containing the energy she has saved for over ten years,[56][58][97] each costing ten million yen to create in total. She uses ten during Archer's summoning ritual, and uses the remaining ten during the battles of the three routes.[56][58][97] Among the jewels she uses, she is shown using a topaz for a wind spell[56] and to blow up Caster's Dragon Tooth Warriors,[78] obsidians to create blinding silver lights,[81] amethyst to make owl familiars[61] and jade to make bird familiars,[98][99][100] and a ruby and a sapphire releasing thorny vines to physically and magically restrain an opponent, with the sapphire's vine draining Magical Energy from the target and using it to power the binding spell on the ruby.[101]

Rin's Pendant[]

Rin's Pendant (凛のペンダント, Rin no Pendanto?) is a powerful, one-of-a-kind jewel pendant left to Rin as part of her inheritance from her father, which she considers to be her father's memento. It is a one hundred year old Tohsaka family heirloom that is the greatest jewel within the household, far stronger than anything else with the equivalent of ten years worth of Rin's Magical Energy. As one of the best artifacts of its class that she believes Tokiomi left to allow her to win the Holy Grail War, Rin decides to utilize it as a last resort, believing anything to be possible with the amount of Magical Energy it possesses. It contains enough Magical Energy to revive a human being on the verge of death, which she uses early in the war to revive Shirou Emiya by restoring his damaged heart.[28] She lacks the skill or ability to perform such a feat on her own, so it requires using the great Magical Energy of the pendant to make up for that. She creates a new heart to use as a substitute, believing the feat exemplary enough to be accepted to the Clock Tower instantly.[56]

After it is drained, it loses much of its weight and only retains a small amount of Magical Energy, less than her ten remaining jewels for battle. She leaves it by Shirou by accident, deciding not to retrieve it because it has no true worth without any remaining energy. It is simply an ordinary, expensive jewel like that, even though it has some value to her as a memento. Shirou picks it up after regaining consciousness, keeping it as a memento of his unknown savior. Archer, a future version of Shirou from another timeline, kept the jewel all his life, making it a catalyst that connects him to his summoner. The jewel she holds during the ritual has no worth as a catalyst, but the jewel held by Archer allows for him to be summoned. It is one of the objects materialized with him, allowing him to give her his own pendant after they arrive home with Rin not knowing the difference. The pendant held by Shirou has a small amount of Magical Energy left, not even enough to use a single Reinforcement spell according to him, while the one held by Archer has none.

The connection is never discovered during Fate. Both pendants are revealed during Unlimited Blade Works after Shirou finds Archer's pendant at Rin's house and tells her of the one he kept, allowing for the connection between Shirou and Archer to be deduced due to that there should only be one such pendant in existence. Shirou eventually connects it to Rin during Heaven's Feel when thinking that she is the only person who could have saved him at that time. He brings it with him to the final battle with Sakura, later saving him by allowing Rider to use it as a landmark to locate him.[102]

Development[]

She had the most screen time out of every character in Fate/stay night.[18]

Creation and Conception[]

Kinoko Nasu's original story of Fate, Rin's original archetype was Misaya Reiroukan, she was designed to be a villainess and original master of Lancer in the novel. When Takashi Takeuchi convinced Nasu to change the setting of the story, Rin's role as a villain was eventually changed to one of the selectable heroines of Fate/stay night. Both Takashi Takeuchi and Kinoko Nasu thought Kana UedaWP's voice is too cute and they thought "Should we look for another possibility for Rin's voice? How about making Rin act overly proud with a cute voice? However it could be risky." In the end they dared to make Rin's voice cute.[103]

Kana Ueda figured out how to play Rin in the Studio DeenWP anime adaptation when she played the original Fate/stay night game, she understood Rin had to put away her feelings a long time ago. When Kana was recording the radio show for Fate /stay night, Takeuchi made illustrations of Rin on colored paper for her. Even though Kana had been selected for the part, when it came to voicing the character for the real thing, she could not imagine Rin coming out of her voice. For a long time she had this sense of incompatibility. She normally don't feel that sense of incompatibility when she play characters from other works. Kana was half in doubt so she ended up asking Nasu if it was really okay for her to play Rin. He said it was fine, but she wondered if it was all right. Kana also thought maybe she should not say that in front of the scenario writer. While playing Rin in Fate/stay night, several other spinoff and related products. She tries to make her match the pace of the story she is in. There are a lot of very delicate, minor changes. In the Studio Deen adaptation TV series, Rin decided to watch over Shirou and Saber. When they recorded the voices for the PS2 game Realta Nua, Rin was a lot more emotional than she was in the show. Kana has to adjust her acting carefully within that kind of field.

Reception[]

Gen Urobuchi thinks the true heroine of Fate/stay night is Rin because in the Unlimited Blade Works route, it was an equal relationship with a woman who's become stronger than most men is depicted. Rin and Shirou mend each other's weaknesses with their own unique strengths, and he think it makes it a very nice relationship.

In response to what Gen said Nasu stated that "It's true that Rin is different from Saber. Rin is written as a completely different gender. She also has a sort of pride in the fact that she's a beautiful girl. With a girl like that by his side, even an unsociable person like Shirou loses his presence of mind."[104]

Takeuchi commented how impressed he was with how Rin turned out. Stating that the idea of making a villainous character that everybody had a low opinion of into a major heroine was initially largely frowned upon by the staff and it was a huge risk. However, after successfully finishing the game, the character became a success, and was greatly well liked.

Kana UedaWP (Voice Actress of Rin) thought of her as a commanding and imperious young girl, like her name implies. Although hidden within that image of a girl who always tries hard is someone who is also childish and playful. Rin has both of these aspects, and she's charming because of it. Kana Ueda has played the role of Rin for such a long time that she really like the Master and Servant pairing of Rin and Archer now. Kana compared herself to Rin, she think she's a little more excitable than Rin, and she make more mistakes. Kana tries not to let it show, but she doesn't mind if you see them because she's a clumsy girl. Personally speaking, she wanted to continue with another story set in the Fate main timeline. She thinks it'd be great if she gets to play Rin again.[105]

  • In the Fourth character popularity poll in 2003, Rin was ranked 93rd.
  • In the first Popularity polls of Fate/stay night in 2004, Rin was ranked 2nd. Tsuku Rin (Tiger Dojo) was ranked 33rd. Loli Rin was ranked 55th.
  • In the second Popularity polls of Fate/stay night in 2006, Rin was ranked 2nd. Kaleidoscope & Magical Ruby was ranked 14th. Zhuge Rin was ranked 40th. Rin Tohsaka of a parallel world is ranked 46th. Hetare Rin was ranked 68th.
  • In the Type-Moon's 10th Anniversary Character Poll, Rin from Fate/stay night was ranked 4th and the third most voted female character. Rin from Fate/Zero was ranked 130th.

Notes[]

  1. It is mentioned that 2/4 was a typo in Fate/complete material II, and that 2/3 is the correct date in Fate/Zero material, but 2/4 has continued to be used since then in publications like Fate/Zero Anime Visual Guide I.

    Rin Tohsaka
The Caretaker of Fuyuki City Fueled by the Elements

Rin is a mage of naturally exceptional aptitude who was born and raised to be the successor of the Tohsaka household, the family responsible for the city of Fuyuki. Rin is in her second year at the same school that Shirou attends, and maintains a solid facade of the perfect honor roll student. She fatefully summoned Emiya, a Heroic Spirit of the future, in the form of Archer and participated in the Fifth Holy Grail War as a Master.

Rin is a special case that is known as an "Average One", which means she is capable of manipulating all five of the great Elements. Also proficient in the Tohsaka household's special Conversion ability, Rin is able to store her prana in gemstones and later tap into that prana at any time. The only drawback of this valuable skill is that the gemstone containing the prana is destroyed when Rin releases the stored prana. Being thrifty by nature, Rin naturally prefers not to use her Conversion ability very often. In terms of offensive magic, Rin is particularly gifted in the curse spell Gandr. At her elder apprentice Kirei's recommendation, Rin takes her physical training as seriously as her magical training, and has taken to learning Bajiquan under Kirei's tutelage.

Rin's efficient and seemingly unfeeling ways have earned her the nickname "Red Devil". While she may appear to push people away, Rin has the strength of character that few come to know or understand. It was this inner strength that allowed her to save Shirou, Archer, and Sakura. Indeed, Rin Tohsaka may just the the best example of a truly strong individual.

    Relationship Chart
Rin's interpersonal relationships can be divided into two categories: those within the Tohsaka household and those outside of it. Her father Tokiomi was a talented mage who participated in the Fourth Holy Grail War. Though not a mage like Tokiomi, Rin's mother had a very rare kind of blood, and it was the mixed heritage of mage's blood and this special blood that granted Rin her unusually exceptional magical abilities,. The Matou household sought to bring this blood into their household as well and adopted Rin's younger sister, resulting in the two sisters growing up in different homes.

Kirei was Tokiomi's apprentice and can therefore be considered Rin's brother-apprentice. After Tokiomi died, Kirei became Rin's guardian and instructed her in both the magical and martial arts. Rin once saw Shirou when they were attending different middle schools, and has been fascinated with him ever since.

Nasu Kinoko & Takeuchi Takashi Discussion

    >The catalyst for Rin's birth

Takeuchi: I wanted to design a character with really sharp-angled eyes, so I focused on that when I was doing the rough sketches, but as the design came along her eyes got rounder and rounder. Drawing a character with two ponytails was also something I wanted to do. By the way, there was another character that filled a role similar to Rin's wasn't there?

Nasu: Yes, the heroine with glasses from old "Fate" named Ayaka Sajyou had a rival character who was a total rich-kid, spoiled heiress type. She would look down on you and laugh at you, like Luvia. Her Servant was the Lancer. You could say that she was the basis for Rin's character. When Shirou snagged the main character position for "stay night", it was this character who transformed into Rin to fill the rival role. We wanted Shirou's rival to be more likable than the snobby heiress, though, so we took inspiration from Aoko Aozaki, a character Takeuchi and I both like. Azaka, Akiha, and Rin are all Aoko-type characters, but I'd say Rin is the most like Aoko. I really didn't feel like making "Witch on the Holy Night" when we were working on "stay night", so I made the executive decision to create a feminine Aoko. Though I suppose she turned out to be more of a clumsy Aoko than a feminine Aoko... Takeuchi seemed to intuitively understand what I was going for, and his "Fate version Aoko" meshed well with my vision for Rin.

Takeuchi: I guess we both wanted the same thing for that character.

Nasu: I was recently chatting with Aruko Wada, an artist for "Fate/Extra", and I asked her what it was like to draw Rin. The instant response I got was that Rin's design was so complete and well put together that there was little to no room for adjustments. Apparently, this made drawing Rin a much more straightforward affair than drawing Saber. Aruko also mentioned that attempting to add things or otherwise alter Rin's look proved difficult.

Takeuchi: I guess we did so well with keeping Rin simple yet infusing her with strong trademark qualities that it's hard to make changes without eliminating that "Rin factor". While designing Rin, I was aiming for a sort of perfection, something that would make her seem unapproachable. I knew the stronger she seemed on the outside, the more of a contrast it would provide for the vulnerabilities she hid inside, and that would make her all the more appealing as a character.

Nasu: Giving her twin ponytails kind of takes the honour student edge off of her and gives her a touch of the rich heiress feel, which actually makes her a tad bit more approachable. Putting that hairstyle on a strict ladybug-type character helps to give the impression that she has an extroverted personality.

Takeuchi: Well, the twin ponytails are there mostly because they are symbolic of the "tsundere" type of personality.

    >Designing Rin's outfits

Takeuchi: Since Rin was taking the honour student role, we wanted the school uniform to fit her better than any of the other characters. For this reason, we used Rin as the base model when designing the school uniform, but she ended up appearing in the game wearing her casual clothes more than any other outfit. In the end, her casual outfit became the "default" outfit for Rin's character. I suppose we could blame that on Archer, too.

Nasu: When did we decide on the colour scheme for Rin's casual clothes?

Takeuchi: I'm pretty sure we settled on red as her theme colour right from the start. As I recall, the choice came rather easily.

    >Financial status of the Tohsaka household

Nasu: The Mage's Association in London (the Clock Tower) deals with patents associated with all things magical, Rin's father Tokiomi holds the patent for a special formula that simplifies magic, for which he receives a patent fee every month. The Tohsaka household was built entirely on this income. With Rin not doing anything in particular to earn an income herself and Tokiomi's formula slowly becoming obsolete over time, the Tohsaka household's financial situation is becoming more and more strenuous by the day. Sometimes I feel like telling Rin that she needs to get herself to London and figure something out quick!

Takeuchi: Especially because Rin can be quite an expensive girl. (laughs)

    >The message Rin carries as a character

Nasu: At the very beginning of her creation, I started with the concept of a girl who was able to be relentlessly hard on herself for any mistakes or failures. She was going to be someone who could go into a rage, but in a way that left you feeling good about it. To top it all off, she had to be pretty.

    Takeuchi: Yeah, Rin's so manly.

Nasu: I prefer using a word like "gallant"!

Takeuchi: Nah, Rin's super cute but she totally has a manly side.

Nasu; Among the human characters, she's probably one of the most complete and well put-together specimens of mankind. That's why Shirou will never turn into Archer as long as he is living alongside Rin.

Takeuchi: I know it's kind of out of the blue, but I feel like I'm only now appreciating how amazing Rin really is.

Nasu: That's right, you mentioned that you're going through some kind of Rin phase lately...

Takeuchi: Yeah, I guess you could say that. (laughs)

Nasu: I will say that Rin was my favourite character when I was writing the story. Rin is like Aoko in so many aspects that it felt good to write Rin's story. Of course, Rider showed up shortly after that and everything went to hell. With regard to Saber, writing her story was always nerve-wracking because I knew she was really important to Takeuchi. I had a similar experience writing Hisui in "Tsukihime". Whenever an artist gets attached to a specific character, it's really stressful for me to write that character's portion of the overall story. I guess the added stress comes from the feeling that the character no longer belongs to just me, and that I need to meet someone's high expectations as I flesh them out. I noticed I was constantly pushing myself to do "better" while I was writing Saber's story. In contrast, I felt so much freedom when writing Rin's story, and maybe that's why it felt extra nice.

Takeuchi: I think Rin is a character who is all about potential. Maybe that's why I'm only truly appreciating her now. Saber felt so complete right from the start, and the poetic beauty of her pairing with Shirou only added to the perfection. In Rin's case, however, a lot of events and situations like that whole London deal kept bringing out new sides of her that we hadn't previously seen. She makes you think about what "potential" really means, in a variety of ways. For example, if we were to do a spin-off story for Saber that took place in the Knights of the Round Table era, we still wouldn't be able to disband or do without the pairing of Saber and Shirou. That combination is just so complete that it's hard to adapt it to totally different situations. Rin, on the other hand, is more of a free agent because her relationship with Shirou doesn't define her in any way. Of course we have the Archer/Rin pairing, but a Lancer/Rin pairing would work out just as well and be just as good in its own way. We could even set up a story where Rin and Luvia are fighting over Shirou. In this way, I feel like Rin has earned her place as a face of the "Fate" series right alongside Saber.

    Magic Circuits [Magecraft]
Pseudo-nerves within the body of a magus.
Magic circuits are responsible for converting life force into magical energy, and for connecting to the underlying grand sorcery formula.
Because the number of magic circuits a person has is fixed at birth, magi lineages do what they can to improve themselves and create an heir with even one more magic circuit.
Once the magic circuits have been opened for the first time, the practitioner can switch them on and off at will.
Each practitioner visualizes the flipping of this switch in their own particular way. For Shirou, the image is that of a gun's firing hammer, while for Rin it is stabbing a heart with a knife.
This image tends to be related to how the circuits were opened for the very first time, so there even those who can only open their circuits through sexual arousal or self-harm.
By the way, Shirou's number of magic circuits is an unexpectedly high 27.
Rin, on the other hand, has 40 main circuits, while her sub-circuits are 30 each.

    Lord El-Melloi II

    Overview
A magus working at the Clock Tower, the headquarters of the Mage’s Association.
One of the twelve Lords that rule and manage the Clock Tower, and the current head of the El-Melloi family. His skill in magecraft is mediocre, but his talent for teaching is recognized by everyone. Apparently.
His real name is Waver Velvet. Before being adopted into the El-Melloi family, he was no more than the eldest son of a fledgling magus. However, the Fourth Holy Grail War drastically changed his life, and before he realized it, he was suffering under the weight of the El-Melloi family’s mantle.

    Appearance
    British, male, in his thirties.
Though he possesses well-chiseled features, his constant expression of displeasure means he is rarely considered to be handsome.
185cm tall, 72kg. Black eyes and hair.
He wears his long hair straight, but it is kept quite well, so it is not too stifling or unkempt. He regularly smokes cigars, but only as a way of calming himself, with no interest in their flavor.

    Personality
    Lawful Neutral.
    Extroverted, confident, proactive.
Has a wicked tongue, and hates people in general… or so he appears. In truth, just and upright.
Always speaks with a kind of disdainful condescension, but that doesn’t come from looking down on his interlocutors. Rather, it stems from a self-deprecating feeling of “compared to that, what am I even doing? I look like an idiot. I’m the biggest fool here!” Intelligent, possessing good judgment, and more than anything else having lost all sense of vanity, he is able to accurately accept himself as he is. As a result,

“Really, I wanted to complete it myself. But I knew it was impossible for me. The moment I realized that, I noticed that everyone around me was brimming with potential, but wasn’t making use of it. Is there any more infuriating way of life? It takes everything I have to protect what little pride I have left, so why do I have to worry so much about how those idiots live?!”

He often curses others in that fashion, but he also says things like, “I can’t bear to watch such a disgraceful waste. You, come over here!” as he regularly looks out for others.
Though he appears cynical and pessimistic, that is only because of how keenly aware he is of his own limits. At his heart, he believes in helping the weak and disciplining the strong. He does not like getting involved in affairs that appear irritating to deal with, but those same affairs tend to capture his attention and prevent him from focusing on other matters, so he often cooperates to resolve such situations, cursing the whole time. While his experiences have taught him to act courageously, he is still rather cowardly. That is the source of his predilection with making sure his preparations are perfect before making a move.

    Manner of Talking
He uses the personal pronoun “watashi.”
For people he is meeting for the first time, or is not especially familiar with, he refers to them by “Last Name”-san or “Name”-kun. He drops the honorific when speaking to his own students. He refers to enemies by their full name with no honorific.
Reines is a special exception, where he refers to her as “kimi” (you) or “ojou-sama” (young lady) in an effort to avoid using her name as much as possible.

When requesting help from someone, he will refer to them as “lady,” “miss,” or “mister.”
He speaks like a young man who spends a great deal of time around old people. His sentences are long and meandering, like a university lecturer, and he often speaks with bitterness. He often adds qualifiers like “seems likely,” “that’s the situation,” or “perhaps that is the case.” giving the impression he is speaking of someone else’s concerns.
He speaks in a rather formal way, but often covers a wide array of topics, regularly diverging into talking about the newest things. Kind of like “for an old guy, you’ve got pretty young tastes!”

Most of his words are fairly strict, but when speaking with someone standing at a crossroads in their life, he becomes much more pleasant and agreeable, bolstering his reputation as a teacher. He is rarely excited by much, but behind closed doors, he becomes furious with his students’ shenanigans (like Flat’s).
“And now you’ve just made more work for me! I’m not even going to have time to sleep! Yes, I understand now, this is actually Hell, isn’t it? There are many depictions of Hell around the world, but one of those is surely where your students are running around causing problems at every waking moment!”
And of course, always around to watch him rant is the young lady Reines, wearing a smile as sweet as the worst medicine.

    Abilities
    Element: Earth.
Specialty: Counteraction, Leyline/Organic Adjustment, etc. Extremely plain.
The quality of his magic circuits is on the lower end of mediocre. As Waver, he could produce about 20 units of magical energy. At the time he became Lord El-Melloi, that increased to 70 plus 10 (similar to hidden savings thanks to magical artifacts he possesses and the rituals he uses).
※For comparison, Shirou could produce 25, and Rin could produce 500. The cutoff for a full-fledged magi is considered to be 100.

As you can see, he falls below the line for a full-fledged magus. Though his talent for adjustment lends to his abilities as a teacher, his talent in that field mostly stems from his character and personality.
Totally unsuited to combat. Though he has a number of mystic codes for self defense, he rarely carries them around.

Assistant: “That talisman in your pocket is the only one you have, Professor?! Don’t you have any other mystic codes?!”
El-Melloi: “No. They’d be useless against a real magus anyway. There’s no point carrying a thousand of them around to extend my life by a couple seconds. I’d suffocate under them before they ever got to me.”
A: “How have you survived so long then?!”
E: “That should be obvious. I don’t go anywhere that an talisman like this isn’t enough to protect me.”

Though he has learned techniques to use in combat, his output is so low that he tries to avoid using them. He doesn’t carry small weapons like handguns around either. His last line of defense is his cigars, which contain (about ten units of) magical energy.
“You thought I smoked these stupidly expensive things just to look sophisticated and eccentric?”
“Well, I guess that’s not really wrong.”

    History
Eldest son of the Velvet family, who first started their study of magecraft at the beginning of the 1800s. He was considered a bit of a prodigy in his hometown.
Full of hope, he applied to enter the Clock Tower, and through his connections somehow managed to join the classroom of a certain Lord, Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald. Thus he entered a rather elite course.
However, with only two hundred years of history under their belt, the Velvet family were infants to the world of magecraft. From the perspective of the Lords, he was only fit to serve as a member of the magical working class.
Rebelling against the authority and old-fashioned structure of the Clock Tower, he joined the Fourth Holy Grail War to prove his talents. In the end, he returned as the only survivor from the war. Thus ended what he thought would be the greatest battle of his life. He returned with a quiet resolve to face the battle that was the life waiting for him.

However, that was not to be the battle of his life. What awaited him on his return would determine the course of the rest of his life. With Kayneth and Sola-Ui gone, the Archibald family began to decline. The other Lords wasted no time in pillaging the rights, mystic codes, personnel, and wealth of the fallen family. In the few months Waver spent preparing for his return from Japan, the Clock Tower had undergone a great upheaval.
Upon his return, the Archibald family was on the edge of collapse. Feeling partially responsible for Kayneth’s death, Waver did what he could to at least preserve the El-Melloi classroom, but it was all for nothing. The young and powerless Waver had no way of saving the dying El-Melloi name.

Even so, he managed to sustain the El-Melloi classroom for three years. Keeping the magi of renowned families from leaving was an impossible task, so instead he set his sights on the younger generation, those studying modern magecraft. With little interest in gathering power for himself, he had no aversions to the new agers. Convincing an old lecturer that had lost his place in the Clock Tower in a previous power struggle to take the podium once again, he created an emotional fulcrum for the new agers to operate around.
Starting as little more than a school club, they eventually rose to the level of the other classrooms of the Clock Tower, and before he realized it Waver himself had completed the necessary courses to teach the classroom in an official sense as a graduate student.
Though he had a terrible reputation among the ruling class, he had become a star of hope for the younger generation, his own distaste for that fact cementing his popularity among the students. (Occasionally, his underclassmen and friends had to fend off assassins sent by the ruling class and the Archibald family.)

Around the time the difficulties of his life had created a permanent wrinkle in his brow, he received an invitation to meet with a branch family of the Archibalds, the Archisorte family. Confused by the invitation, he was presented with Kayneth’s body that they had retrieved (with its destroyed Magic Crest), and a report on the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War. The young head of the Archisorte family, Reines, claimed to have watched his every move with admiration since he had returned to the Clock Tower. She was one of his fans, she claimed with a grin.
Waver, of course, didn’t believe her for an instant, and expected to be killed at any moment. From the perspective of the Archisorte family, Waver was the cause of their collapse. But he hadn’t stopped there. He had also stolen the rights to the El-Melloi classroom away from them, and even if it was in a bid to preserve it, ended up transforming it into something repulsive. Killing him would hardly be enough to satisfy their grudge.
Confirming that Waver was well aware of that, Reines presented him with an offer. If he accepted her terms, she would keep the details of the Fourth Holy Grail War a secret, and furthermore would guarantee his safety. In exchange, he had to agree to the following three terms:

    • Repay all of the El-Melloi’s debt.
    • Maintain the seat of Lord until Reines is old enough to take it herself.
    • Restore Kayneth Archibald’s Magic Crest (the Archi Crest).

He understood how impossible those terms would be to fulfill, but also that if he refused, he would likely be killed immediately. He did feel he bore some responsibility, so he reluctantly accepted her offer.

W: “But what do you mean by that second condition? Isn’t it basically the same as paying back the debt?
R: “Ah, that. To put it simply, someone has to take the job of Lord until I’m old enough.”
    Waver immediately felt suspicious.
    W: “Wait. Are you saying—”
R: “Exactly. I’m sure dealing with the other Lords will be a pain, but I’ll leave it all to you, Lord El-Melloi II. Or should I just call you my beloved older brother?”

Waver immediately collapsed. Before he could so much as stand, she continued.
“Ah, I forgot one thing. There’s a fourth condition. You also have to be my private tutor. Having a brother not related to me by blood giving me private instruction is a great form of impropriety,” said the suspiciously grinning young girl.
Ever since then, Waver took up the mantle of Lord El-Melloi II (since he was Kayneth’s successor) in the Clock Tower. Such was the birth of one of the Clock Tower’s most charismatic lecturers, destitute yet holding the position of Lord and running his own classroom and department.

“It’s not like I’m asking you to work for the rest of your life. I just want your help until the rightful glory of the title of Lord has been restored. That sounds fair to me.”
“That’s the same as saying ‘work until you die,’ you demon.”

[v] Fate/Zero Animation Visual Guide I: The Fourth Holy Grail War Glossary: Tohsaka [Family]

    Tohsaka [Family]
One of the Three Founding Families, the Tohsaka family provided Fuyuki City as the grounds for the Holy Grail War. The distinguished magus family has long resided in Fuyuki, managing the leylines in the region. Although the family has been based in Japan for generations, its chants and incantations are recited in German. 200 years ago, the first head of the family, Tohsaka Nagato, was a pupil of Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg, one of the five living Magicians. Hence why the family still uses German today. Nagato’s ancestors were hidden Christians in Japan, which translated into Nagato having half-decent connections to the Holy Church. He was also well treated by the Mage’s Association due to his position as the pupil of a Magician.

    [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Tohsaka Tokiomi [Person's name], p.101

    Tokiomi Tohsaka [Person's name]
The fifth Tohsaka family head. Had everything gone according to plan, he would have been the man to finish the Holy Grail War once and for all.
He started making preparations for the Fourth Holy Grail War long before it ever began. But although he had set up everything perfectly in his favor, he was tragically killed by his trusted ally, Kotomine Kirei. Well, seeing as how the one who tempted Kirei into defecting in the first place was Gilgamesh, in a sense you could say Tokiomi died due to a lack of compatibility with his Servant.
Tokiomi and his predecessor made a conscious effort to commercialize their spiritual lands, and the unnatural economic success of every business situated there naturally led to exorbitant rental fees, which were collected by the Tohsaka. Of course, as far as Tokiomi was concerned, the fact that the "harvests of all the tenant farmers tilling the Tohsaka land" were protected from bad luck and natural disasters by the Tohsaka's careful management of the ley lines, meant that taxing them like this was his natural right. Truly, it was a 20th century feudal system made possible through sorcery.
Although, even among the Second Owners of other lands, very few have ever seen monetary returns like those made by the Tohsaka.
After Tokiomi's death, these assets were passed on to Aoi, and after Aoi's death they were passed on once more to Rin. Or at least, they should have been, but thanks to her legal guardian Kirei's naïve honesty and crude management, most of the valuable property was lost to other people. Then again, as a priest who values honest poverty, he probably thought it would be good for her from an educational standpoint. Just another thing for Rin to wallop him for, I guess.

    [v] Fate/side material - Encyclopedia: Tohsaka Rin [Person's name], p.067-068 [T]

    Rin Tohsaka [Person's name]
Current head of the distinguished Tohsaka family, and one of the main heroines of Fate/stay night. As a Master, she spent just as much time quarreling with Shirou as she did cooperating with him.
Her manner of speech is often hostile and dismissive of other people, but deep down she has a caring, big-sisterly disposition.
Her tendency of making trivial mistakes at the worst possible moment is a hereditary curse.
Though she really is a lot nicer than she seems, in the end she always makes her decisions based on cold, rational logic. In her own words, it's "not a very cute personality".
There are even times when she thinks she might lack any sort of "girlishness" at all, and it's starting to become something of a complex for her.
In fact, her choice in personal clothes is probably an overreaction to that. Still, showing that much leg… a pure and wholesome boy won't know where to look. Please, try to bear with it, Shirou.
Her hobbies are admiring jewels and bullying Shirou.
She's a mischievous girl at heart, so she loves teasing serious people. Please, try to bear with it, Shirou.
As far as sorcery goes, she specializes in the flow and conversion of magical energy.
Since it's not a sorcery trait well-suited for combat, she stores away magical energy in jewels ahead of time, and uses them as disposable, limited-function mystic codes.
Aside from that, she also practices pseudo-karate as a form of self-defense.
Her instructor in martial arts is Kotomine. That fake priest was responsible for the sequence of moves she used to corner Caster.
By the way, she had the most screen time out of every character in Fate/stay night.

    「Fate」

  19. [v] Fate/Zero material - Encyclopedia: Tohsaka Rin [Person's name], p.101-102

    Rin Tohsaka [Person's name]
The eldest daughter of Tohsaka Tokiomi. The younger years of one of the heroines of Fate.
10 years ago, Rin’s understanding of the Holy Grail War was about equal to that of Shirou’s during the Fifth War. That is, it seemed like she understood but she really did not.
In the eyes of young Rin, her father Tokiomi was a great magus who must be respected and loved, but as for the coldheartedness that accompanied the ideal, that was a negative aspect of his personality that she failed to understand.
If Tokiomi had survived until the time when Rin could have really understood her father’s personality, it would certainly have deeply affected the development of her own personality. Whether she would oppose that inhumanity and leave the path of thaumaturgy, or whether she would become a “perfect and coldhearted” witch like her father – no matter which one, this parallel world, for Rin, would certainly be one far away from happiness.

Q: Why is it that Tohsaka Rin didn’t know about the original goal of the Holy Grail War to open a “hole” beyond the World?

Q: Why is it that Tohsaka Rin, as the legitimate heir to the legacy of the Three Houses, didn’t know about the original goal of the Holy Grail War to open a “hole” beyond the World? I would have thought that the Tohsaka family would have kept some records regarding the true nature of the Holy Grail War. ...Could it be that Rin just never saw those records?

A: It was because of her Papa’s untimely, careless death.

  21. [v] Fate/side material - Encyclopedia: Projection [Magecraft], p.067 [T]

    Projection [Magecraft]
    Gradation Air.
A sorcery that uses magical energy to materialize a mirror image of an object.
As Rin mentioned in the story, it's not very efficient.
That's because, if you're making a replica of something, rather than using projection it's easier and more practical just to gather the materials and build it yourself.
Normally, it is only used to project a substitute for an item that has already been lost, and for just a few minutes within one's own time axis.
At any rate, since Gradation Air is just supposed to be a short-term rental of the item's outward appearance, you can see why the version used by Shirou and Archer is completely ridiculous. It's no wonder that Rin wanted to kill him when she saw his shed.
Of course, Shirou can only project things that are related to weapons in some way – or more specifically, swords. Modern weapons are off limits.
Well, technically he can pull out shields or armor, too, if he strains himself to his utmost limits, but the effects only last for an instant and the cost is enormous.

Q: How does Tohsaka Rin pay for her living expenses when she is performing sorcery using such valuable jewels? Is she eating up her parents’ inheritance? Has she taken up a part-time job like Shirou? Or has she turned her hand to some other trade?

A: The Tohsaka family is still relatively wealthy because it receives royalties from magical patents (theories and rituals used at the Clock Tower. Like real-life patents.), and as a result their income is surprisingly high. Even without any additional revenue, annual income is roughly #0,000,000 yen. ...Although, Rin feels a bit ashamed of this since it’s all thanks to the work of previous generations.

Though it may have seemed like she was wavering back and forth about whether or not to save him for quite a while in the prologue, in reality it took her less than a second to make her decision. She sure does make snap judgments, that Rin.
Then, when Shirou was hazily tidying up after he came to, he ended up stuffing the pendant in his pocket before heading home.
As for the sequence of events that led to the pendant returning to Rin's possession, that's covered in the story.
Honestly, I was a little worried about what might happen if somebody figured it out from playing the trial version. I don't know what I would have done.

1790s - The Holy Grail War preparation
In the 1790s, the Einzbern and Matou landed in Japan to fulfill their plan. Then, they proceeded with the preparations of the First Holy Grail war over the course of 10 years.

1800s - The First Holy Grail War
The first Holy Grail War. The rules were not laid out properly, and the Masters' sense of being “participants” was weak. Because there were no Command Spells as in the present, the Servants did not comply with orders, and so the rest of the ritual failed. The Descent of the Holy Grail was at Ryūdō temple.

1860s - The Second Holy Grail War
In light of the failure of the First, the ritual was held only after detailed rules were developed. The so-called "Command Spell System” was perfected/completed, so that it became possible for the Master to enslave the Servant, though the War was a failure. The Descent of the Holy Grail was at the Tōsaka Residence.

1930s - The Third Holy Grail War
Held on the eve of WWII. There were battles over the Lesser Grail with the Imperial Army and the Nazis as well, and the fighting unfolded in the Imperial Capital, but the Lesser Grail was destroyed and the ritual failed. The evocation site of the Grail was at Fuyuki Church. Angra Mainyu was taken in and the Greater Grail was contaminated.

1990s - The Fourth Holy Grail War

2000s - The Fifth Holy Grail War
Events told in "Fate / stay night", the latest and final battle.

2010s - The taking apart of the Holy Grail War.
Ten years after the Fifth War. Lord Emelloi II (real name, Waver Velvet. One of the Masters of the Fourth War) arrived in Fuyuki and together with the head of the Tohsaka line, set out to completely take apart the Great Grail. The Association was planning on bring back the Greater Grail, so the two sides were completely opposed. After the end of the great turmoil of the same magnitude as the Grail War, the Greater Grail was completely dismantled. The Grail Wars of Fuyuki came to a complete conclusion here.

    The Three Families [Others]
In “Apocrypha”, the Three Families are the magi who constructed the Fuyuki Holy Grail War… in other words, the Einzberns, Tohsaka and Makiri.
Just as alluded in the light novels, Makiri (Matou) Zouken fought fiercely against Darnic during the Third Holy Grail War, but became practically crippled due to the shock of the Greater Grail being stolen. The family wasn’t blessed with a successor either, so their future as magi has been completely shut.
The Tohsaka gave up on the Greater Grail, and now seek a new path in becoming one with the universe with Chinese Kenpou while learning magecraft. The twin-tail daughter of the family might also end up becoming the founder of a “completely new martial arts that combines magecraft and Chinse Kenpou” by the time she becomes a high school student. However, she never imagined that her younger sister who was adopted by distant relatives would come visit her in Japan after becoming a pro-wrestler with unimaginably nice proportions and forming a tag team with a drill-roll-haired girl…!
The Einzberns are in the midst of struggling to make a new Greater Grail under the excuse “It was stolen, so we’ll just make a new Holy Grail”. Fortunately, in the “Apocrypha” world, a certain dead fish-eyed mercenary won’t end up becoming involved with the Einzberns, so their greatest work Illyasviel will never be born—therefore, as long as she isn’t born, the Einzberns will never despair… Is that really fortunate?

GJ: I have a question about Fate characters. How high (or low) are the talents of Emiya Shirou and Tohsaka Rin within the entire history of the Association?
Nasu: Rin really is a genius. Given time, she'll enter within the top 100 magi of the Association throughout its entire history. Shirou won't move out from being an magus apprentice, but as a spell-user, he'll be among one of the big specialists. Ultimately, he'll receive an evaluation on the same level as "Magus Killer" Emiya Kiritsugu had in his peak, maybe. If I were to put into simple numbers, Ciel: 100, Rin: 70-100, Shirou: 10 (under particular limited conditions, then 40).

Q: On average, how much is one of Tohsaka Rin’s jewels worth?

A: If we’re only talking about the ones she uses in combat, those go up to about 500,000 yen each. As for the ones made of crystals originally easy to store mana in, those are made of precious metals and fetch a very high price (I decided long ago that the gems would be very valuable). The Tohsaka have exclusive channels through which they obtain the jewels, and Rin racks her brains every day wondering whether she could've gotten a better price from the buyer if she had just become friends with that lady.

    Jewel Magecraft [Magecraft]
The sorcery that Rin specializes in.
Jewels easily accumulate the thoughts of their owners, and make excellent vessels for magical energy.
Crystals that have slumbered beneath the earth for eons, in particular, are prone to having nature spirits form within them, and jewels with that property can be used as simple sorcery crests. For example, a jewel with a nature spirit of fire dwelling within it would become highly flammable just by passing magical energy through it… or something along those lines.
Whenever Rin has spare time she transfers her magical energy into jewels, turning them into powerful bullets. However, in the end they are merely disposable items.
Because their sorcery reduces expensive jewels to ash after a single use, the Tohsaka magi are fated to be chronically afflicted with a lack of funds.

  72. [v] Fate/side material - Encyclopedia: Bazett Fraga McRemitz [Person's name], p.069-070 [T]

    Bazett Fraga McRemitz [Person's name]
    Lancer's original Master.
    Fate unknown.
She was a foreign magus dispatched by the Association, and summoned Lancer using a pair of rune stone earrings as the catalyst.
A beautiful woman dressed as a man, her abilities as a magus are top-notch.
She is an enforcer, tasked with the capture of sealing designated magi. Essentially, an existence similar to the executors of the Holy Church. She is extremely skilled in both sorcery and martial arts.
Though she probably would have ended up being a threat to Rin if she had been able to participate in the war, she was taken out prematurely by a surprise attack from Kotomine.
The reason for that is because she and Kotomine were actually old friends. Back when Kotomine was still an executor working for the Church, they often ran into each other on assignments and fought together as comrades.
So, when Kotomine, who until then had never relied on her even once, said he wanted to meet with her, Miss Bazett was secretly elated. With no reason to doubt him, she walked right into his trap.
She didn't even have time to call out Lancer, before Kotomine cleanly sliced off her left arm from behind and stole her command spells.
Afterward, he gave Lancer two commands.
The first was to make him accept Kotomine as his Master, while the second was to make him gather intelligence.
As for what the final command spell was used for, that's covered in the story itself.

  73. [v] Fate/complete material III: World Material - Theory of Magic - Magecraft: Incantations, p.043

    Incantations
The incantation is performed when using magecraft, and is a necessary step to activate a magic formula. There are two types of incantations: steps and bars. Bars take more time than steps, which finish instantly. The more difficult the magic formula, the longer the incantation. It is also possible to raise the effect of the magic by using a longer incantation.

Incantations are bound by certain constraints. As long as these rules are followed, personal arrangement of the details may be effective. This is particularly evident with spells, and it is customary for different schools and magi to arrange incantations according to personal ease of use. Rituals or contracts are needed to activate large scale magic, but these include countless steps and bars, and thus are not treated as incantations.

Caster’s High-Speed Divine Words can activate large scale magic in one bar, and these one-bar incantations activate magic at equivalent or greater speed to one step.

    Rin's Jewelcraft1

    When‌ ‌Rin‌ ‌uses‌ ‌jewel‌ ‌magic,‌ ‌she‌ ‌uses‌ ‌incantations‌ ‌to‌ ‌designate‌ ‌the‌ ‌gemstone‌ ‌and‌ ‌effect‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌activated.‌

•One step (less than one second)
Incantations performed by one action such as finger pointing, teeth gnashing, etc.
These are the shortest types of incantations and they can activate magic in an instant.
These include Gandr shooting which activates by finger pointing and Mystic Eyes which activate by looking. Also called Single Action.

    •One bar (approximately one second)
Incantations using spells and utterances. No matter how fast one says it, at least one second will be used up. Put two of these together and you have two bars, three and you have three bars, and the incantation becomes larger and larger. Of course, for each extra bar, the time is extended by 1 second.

    •Ten counts/Instant Contract (ten seconds)
A magic activation method which establishes a contract that would have taken many hours in about ten seconds. As an incantation, there would be ten or more bars. Thus, while it may be called instant, ten seconds (counts) will actually be necessary.

    Rin's Jewelcraft1

Q: In the Prologue, the clocks were an hour early when Rin woke up, but she only remembered them being 30 minutes fast... why is that? She did suspect some trick of her late father’s, though (laugh). Could it be that Rin, being the idiot she is, forgot about the first time and set her clock 30 minutes fast twice?

A: The clocks being one hour fast was a scheme of her late father Tokiomi. A bit of playfulness on his part, seeming to say “if she can’t even notice a slip-up as trivial and close to home as this, it’s too soon for her to fight in the Holy Grail War.” I have to admit, it’s a little different from the perfect gentleman Tokiomi was portrayed as in Fate/Zero (laugh)

Q: At the end of Sakura Route, the shape of the Shirou resurrected by the Third Magic was not human, correct?

Q: At the end of Sakura Route, the shape of the Shirou resurrected by the Third Magic was not human, correct? If his shape was not human, how did they know which object was Shirou?

A: Rider used Rin's pendant as a landmark. As to the state that Shirou was in, I will leave it up to your imagination. Since Shirou was reconstructed from a portion of Illya's body, in terms of size, you would not expect him to be the same as the original. That was my thought process.
