Sancraid Phahn (サンクレイド・ファーン, Sankureido Fān?) is the Master of Berserker in the Second Holy Grail War of Fate/Prototype.
Profile[]
Background[]
As a member of the Assembly of the 8th Sacrament, Sancraid carried out various missions for them and killed so many people that not even Catholic Cardinal could grant him asylum. Though he was supposed to be publicly executed, he ended up faking his death. He then bought an American citizenship and started living as a Christian priest.[1][2]
He later joins the Templar Order under a pseudonym. At some point, he is sent to Japan to be the Overseer for the First and later Second Holy Grail War.
Appearance[]
Sancraid is a young adult with short straight silver hair, blue eyes and a thin frame with a reptilian shape. He wears a black priest's uniform with white gloves. His Command Seals are located on his tongue, taking the form of 8 devilish wings, with 8 eyes on every wing and one in the center.
Personality[]
Unlike his equivalent Kirei Kotomine, Sancraid initially appears very kind, pitiful and remorseful, speaking comforting words to Ayaka Sajyou rather than in any tone of derision or sarcasm. Also, while Kirei hid his ambitions for the Holy Grail while maintaining a certain air of animosity, Sancraid appears as a complete maniac, switching between a kind persona and an evil psychotic one that is completely obsessed with the Holy Grail.
The truth is that, behind his warm and compassionate demeanor, Sancraid really is a fanatical racist, to the point of possessing a ferocious and furious hatred for Asians and considering them sub-human.
He's a hunter, someone who murders heretics ruthlessly. He also loves teasing Ayaka.[2]
Role[]
Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver[]
In Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Sky Silver, Sancraid served as the Holy Church's observer for the First Tokyo Holy Grail War. He is mostly a bystander for this war and is only mentioned a couple of times in the novel. He is simply credited as 'Church Man' in the Drama CDs.[3]
The first time Sancraid is mentioned is during an journal excerpt, however he is not named in either of these excerpts.
On the eighth day of the Holy Grail War, Tatsumi Kitano visits him in his church in Ochanomizu to register himself as a participant. Welcoming him, Sancraid tells Tatsumi that there is something he absolutely has to know.[4]
Over the course of the Holy Grail War, Sancraid has meetings with an agent who acts as a go-between between his boss who is Archer (Gilgamesh)'s future Master and Nigel Saward. During the Battle on top of Tokyo Bay, Sancraid receives a call from someone informing him that the US Navy is going to engage Rider's Noble Phantasm. He then handles the clean-up of the incident after the battle.
On the twelfth day of the Holy Grail War, Sancraid senses a guest and goes out to meet Assassin who has a message for him from Manaka Sajyou. Assassin informs him that Saber is off the table and that Manaka will not hand him over to him. Realizing what Manaka's intentions are, Sancraid tells Assassin that he will offer his full support to Manaka instead.[5]
Two days later, Sancraid is informed of a young girl named Suzuno Yoshimori. As Sancraid questions her, he discovers that she was kidnapped by Manaka Sajyou to serve as a sacrifice. However, she was let go afterwards thanks to Caster, Assassin and a zombified Tatsumi. After the questioning is over, Sancraid erases the girl's memories.[6]
During the final battle, he welcomes Hiroki Sajyou and Saber at the entrance to the Greater Grail before attempting to kill them. While Saber heads on ahead to the Greater Grail, Sancraid faces off with Hiroki who kills him with a gun. He is later revived through mysterious means.
After the Holy Grail War is over, Sancraid receives Elza Saijo's report and lets her return home.
Fate/Prototype[]
He is a current (actually previous) member of the Assembly of the 8th Sacrament, participating in the War under its and the Church's direction. He is actually a member of the Order of the Templars (another organization that has connections and allegiance to the Church but is actually separate) and one of their top heretic hunters under a false name, due to his notoriety.
Prior to the war, he kills Berserker's original Master after he has summoned Berserker and steals control of him.[2]
At the start of the Holy Grail War, Sancraid meets with Ayaka at her father's and sister's graves. Expressing his condolences, Sancraid warns Ayaka that the Holy Grail War is about to start soon. Ayaka objects, declaring that she is not going to participate. But Sancraid whispers that she cannot escape from this.
At another point in the Holy Grail War, Sancraid provides Ayaka with information about suspicious activities in the industrial zone, that are revealed to be instigated by Rider.[2]
Later on, he secretly meets with Ayaka at a cafe to discuss how to free each other from their Servants.
At some point during the Holy Grail War, Sancraid confronts Ayaka and Saber. He uses Berserker to beat Saber into submission and then forces Ayaka to give up her Master Degrees to him.[7] After Ayaka defeats him, Sancraid laughs wildly and reveals that he is an extra Master, not the first-ranked one.
Abilities[]
Sancraid uses Holy Church Magecraft and secret techniques of the Assembly of the 8th Sacrament. Like Souren Araya, he possesses a multi-layered defensive Bounded Field which is able to move with him, granting him extraordinary defensive power that he is highly boastful of.[1] As a result of his mobile Bounded Field, Sancraid has Magic Resistance on the same level as Saber's. He was able to remove Ayaka's Command Seal and transfer it to the same location on him as her to control her Servant, Saber.

Comment from Takeuchi Takashi: His concept design was supposed to involve a nondescript face……yet somehow he became this sort of character. During the actual production, he became quite popular.
Explanation: Berserker’s Master. Uses a pseudonym. A priest dispatched on a mission by the Order of the Templars. Depraved. Has an ordinary face and ordinary appearance, but when seen is hard to forget, and has the looks of a reptile. He does not give off any feelings of being human. Because he had killed so many people, even the Catholic Cardinal could not give him asylum, so he was publicly executed……in reality, he bought himself American citizenship and lives as a Christian priest.
Because he can utilize multiple mobile magic circles simultaneously, he boasts of this supreme defensive power. The rank of Servant Berserker is Rank 2. Originally, Sancraid thought that “After all, it is only the Holy Grail phenomenon that arose on this Far East island nation” and looked upon the Holy Grail War with contempt, but quickly discovered the truth and changed his views. After that, he immediately murdered the person he was expected to assist, Berserker’s Master, and of course obtained the position of Master. Seems to be fond of teasing Ayaka. “I, reaaally like stupid women!”サンクレイド・ ファーン

Comment from Takeuchi Takashi:
- Addresses self as: “Watashi”
