Shiki Ryougi (両儀 式, Ryōgi Shiki?) is the main protagonist of Kara no Kyoukai. She is a girl who possesses the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, a supernatural ability that allows the user to see the inherent mortality of everything (both living and non-living) in the form of lines. She assists the Garan no Dou agency in handling paranormal cases when combat is required.
Profile[]
Background[]
Shiki's family, the Ryougi, were members of the Demon Hunter Organization. Their special skill involves creating two separate and distinct personalities within themselves. When a child is born, he or she is given a single name written in two different kanji, each one relating to each personality.
Shiki's mother and father names are not mentioned. While she has an older brother, Kaname Ryougi, he was unable to manifest a second personality within himself, thus making him ineligible to succeed as the head of the family. Due to Shiki's success in manifesting her second persona and her older brother's inability to do so, she was chosen as the next head of the family and began her training in combat.
When Shiki was young, her father took her to meet her dying grandfather. He told Shiki that people can only truly kill someone once in their lifetime, elaborating that those whom had killed many times are no longer human, fated to live with their guilt until their death. It is at this moment that Shiki learns to value the notion surrounding the weight and responsibility that comes with murder. Before passing away, he wished Shiki to have a peaceful death.
By the year of 1996 as Shiki reaches the age of 16, the Ryougi family had effectively retired from the task of demon hunting, becoming a family similar to the Tohnos, in that they remained as wealthy landowners. In this case, they own a large Japanese-style mansion with a grove of bamboo beyond the outer wall. Shiki also took lessons in Japanese harp, flower arrangement, calligraphy, swordsmanship, jujutsu, and dance, as well as studying cooking as a hobby.[3]
Her academic ability is above average compared to Mikiya.[4]
Appearance[]
Shiki has always mostly worn a wide variety of traditional kimonos ranging from colorful yukatas to high quality furisodes up to the age of sixteen.[5] Despite being seemingly unremarkable, her kimono is a luxury item not apparent to the eye. The quality is revealed in the fine details, the haute coutureWP being that she can perform high kicks while still wearing a kimono.[6] She can’t actually distinguish between different Kimono types, but because she’s been in contact with nothing but high-class goods her entire life she can at least tell the difference between “good” and “bad”. At the kimono fabrics shop, she’ll pick out a material without hesitation and leave, at which point Akitaka will look at the price only to find that it costs as much as he makes in two months.[7]
Though she had received clothing from Akitaka that would suit a girl her age, she never bothered to wear them, and because her school was one without uniforms, she stayed with her kimono. She wished to utilize a long-sleeved kimono, but instead wore a Yukata-like, single-piece kimono for ease of changing during physical education classes. Comments from her high school peers and prodding from Mikiya about her insistence on simply wearing extra clothing on top of her kimono caused her to spontaneously decide to wear something over it. She decided to buy a leather jacket, so she began a strange habit of wearing a leather jacket over a kimono during winter.[5]
Her hair is short, and while she often used to brush her hair, it was usually unkempt after her recovery from her 2-year coma. Shiki has ink-black hair, pale skin color and black eyes described as being of "clear void". While she was known to wear wooden geta footwear as part of her casual wear, she commonly wore boots with laces as part of her default attire, especially when embarking on her assignments under the Garan no Dou agency.
While it seems that she is concerned about her attire, she does not actually care. She simply wears what she wishes, but the result ends up consistently being a kimono, laced-up boots or geta, and a red leather jacket.[5] Her favorite outfit is the red leather jacket, but only Mikiya is oblivious to the reason as to why she loves it. She does not favor any particular red leather jacket, and insists that "I will switch to a new one if this one gets worn out".[8]
After the case at Reien Girl's Academy was wrapped up, Akitaka was entrusted with the Reien uniform's safekeeping. In several years, he quietly and discreetly passed it on to Mikiya.[9]
The original concept behind Shiki was "a juxtaposition of Eastern and Western concepts", or literally "an unhomogenized compromise between the East and the West."[6][10]
Pre-coma, the two personalities Shiki and SHIKI wore the same style of dress with the latter often being depicted as wearing kimonos of various warm colors. Shiki's third personality 「Shiki Ryougi」 was often depicted as having worn a light pink kimono of the furisode variety, all while lacking her signature red leather jacket despite only ever being seen during snowy nights. 「Shiki Ryougi」 was known for displaying a serene and trance-like expression in all of her appearances.
Personality[]
Children born into the Ryougi family are generally male and are artificially induced with dual personalities, but Kaname was unable to manifest a second personality of his own. Shiki was confirmed to display the trait instead and was raised as the family head in his place, displaying the personalities of SHIKI (織?), a male personality customarily called the "yang" personality, and Shiki (式?), the female personality called the "yin" personality.
It is not the result of Dissociative Identity Disorder even though it is a dual personality, so it is more a matter of whose actions take priority.[11] It is easy to tell which Shiki is speaking at a given time because they both have a distinct style of speaking, most notably that the female Shiki speaks politely and with reserve, referring to herself with the gender-neutral pronoun watashi (私?), while the male persona has a brash personality and refers to himself with the masculine pronoun ore (オレ?). The two personalities could not communicate to each other but they can both understand what the other is feeling. When one comes out it is like the other goes to sleep, and at the moment they switch they feel each other’s desires.[12]
Shiki[]
While feminine before the accident, Shiki, no longer able to feel SHIKI after waking from the coma, assumes that he has died and feels a detachment from her memories before the accident. She does not have a realistic sense of living, knowing that she is Shiki while also not feeling that she actually is Shiki.[5] She hopes to regain herself and the "dead" SHIKI, and decides to put on a cold facade that somewhat resembles the male Shiki's, utilizing a coarse male speech pattern and "ore", and tries to act as the female Shiki. Touko understands the sense of detachment Shiki feels, and theorizes that the current Shiki is a third, new personality.
She has an enigmatic, grim, cold, mean, heartless, cynical, moody, merciless, and highly brooding personality, appearing to care about nothing, but she occasionally reacts in surprisingly feminine ways. Mikiya decides that if she were to be compared to an animal that it would be something like a rabbit. Due to being aware of her abnormality since childhood, being a killer who could not kill, she hated both herself and other people. Developing her cold personality as a result, she secretly wished to experience the happiness of a normal person. Her fate has changed drastically since encountering the materialization of that dream.[5]
Due to her impulse to kill, she tries to feel a sense of living through killing, but never succeeds due to various accidents and benevolent obstructions. With her uncertain sense of living, she listlessly continues to go to Touko's office on a daily basis.[5] Shiki declines Mystic Eye Killers from Touko, which would allow her to live a normal life free of seeing death if she were to wear them. It could be seen as a sign of how self abusive she is, or it can be called more like an episode that reflects her heart of clear water. While Touko put a large amount of money into constructing them, Shiki simply shoved them back, saying "Why should I do it to please you?" Her reasoning for declining is the same as refusing to wear the uniform of Reien Girls' Academy, in that she thinks it looks ridiculous on herself.[13]
She can be said to occasionally behave like a "Stone-head-like stone head", evidence that she lives by feelings alone.[14] She has an animalistic view towards other people, dividing them into two categories regardless of good or evil. Deciding based upon "those she can be with" and "those she cannot be with", she will stay with someone "she can be with" even if she hates them. Touko is "dislike", Azaka is "like", and Mikiya, in her own words, is "I do not know."[5]
Strawberry ice-cream is one of the few things she is fond of, but it is also one of the things that she hates. She despises cold food, but always seems to buy it from the convenience store. Her persistence towards eating it caused Mikiya to make insensitive comments like ".... are you... are you trying to conquer your weakness...?"[15]
She is not exactly a dog lover but she likes them for their personality due to Mikiya's nickname "Puppy-kun".[16] She has a monthly allowance of 50,000 yen. If she ever needs more money beyond that, she casually puts out an “I wanna go shopping” sort of aura, and Akitaka Suzurigi will make arrangements.[17]
SHIKI[]
SHIKI is the personality that controls the aspect of "Denial/Negativity." He is a lost killer responsible for Shiki Ryougi's destructive impulses. Even though the only emotion that he can feel is "to kill," he despises his own impulses and voluntarily became Shiki's subordinate personality. He has the speech and gestures of a youth. The relationship between them changes upon the entrance of Mikiya, and he decides to act as the substitute at the time of the accident and disappear.[11]
「Shiki Ryougi」[]
Shiki possesses an actual third personality. 「Shiki Ryougi」 is the will of the body that manifested as a personality of its own, and is directly connected to 「 」, the Root. Because she is connected to the Root, she is considered part of it and one with it. The pronunciation of 「 」 would be Void (空, kara?) if it were to have one. Having always existed in the gap between Shiki and SHIKI, she hid her existence from both personalities after creating the two.[18][19] This personality is housed in the body rather than the other personalities housed in the mind.
Shiki Ryougi was fated to be erased by the Counter Force before birth due to having the Origin of 「 」, which would be connected to the Root itself; however, the Ryougi used specific methods to prevent this from happening. After Shiki Ryougi was born, the Ryougi realized that the child was completely empty without a personality of its own. To fix this, they forcefully awakened Shiki's Origin. Upon gaining a personality through the Origin Awakening, 「Shiki Ryougi」 immediately became able to see every event recorded in the Root and, deciding everything to be uninteresting and meaningless, created the perfectly split personalities of Shiki and SHIKI as the Ryougi family wanted of her then hid herself behind the two.
Because she has no interest in anything due to her omniscience, 「Shiki Ryougi」 usually remains dormant within Shiki.
Role[]
Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden Of Sinners[]
Chapter 2: Murder Speculation (Part 1)[]
On March 1995, Shiki makes her first full appearance during a snowy night, when she meets Mikiya Kokutou for the first time after he passes by her on an empty street. Later in April, they would meet again having enrolled in the same private high school although, upon introducing himself to her, Shiki does not recall meeting Mikiya before. The two would end up in the same class as first-year students. Shiki is an honour student during her school days.[20]
On September during the last day of her school's summer vacation, Shiki unknowingly finds herself in an alley in the presence of a fresh corpse. She gazes at the corpse in awe of the blood and carnage as if she were in a trance. She would then use her fingers to touch and play with the blood spilled on the pavement, putting and tracing it on her lips, incidentally making it her first ever use of a "lipstick." Just as summer vacation ends, a new semester of their high school begins. Shiki is prompted to buy herself a red leather jacket for the coming winter season in response to Mikiya's prodding about her insistence on simply wearing extra clothing on top of her kimono even during winter.
Just as autumn begins, Shiki and Mikiya would later go on to spend their lunchtimes on one of the school building's rooftops, with the two developing a casual relationship. On one occasion, Mikiya muses about a recent murder that occurred on the last day of summer vacation during one of their lunchtime conversations. Shiki finds herself wondering about the incident in relation to the corpse she saw on the last day of summer vacation, despite outwardly expressing disgust on the matter as a topic of conversation during meal time.
Within the same month, Akitaka warns Shiki of four recent murders, including the first one, just as each successive incident becomes widely known to the general public. Due to the curfew enforced by the police in lieu of the recent murders, Shiki is unable to embark on her nightly strolls that she so often loves to do. With the rising prevalence and media coverage of the murders, all students in Shiki's school were told to go home early upon being dismissed from their classes. Students were also forbidden from attending extracurricular activities. Mikiya learns from his cousin Daisuke Akimi, a police investigator, that the murderer is most likely from his school. While the suspicion initially turns to Shiki, Mikiya does not want to believe it, even though she has an injury consistent with Daisuke's investigation.
SHIKI arranges a meeting with Mikiya, explaining her condition to him and surprising him with the male persona's outgoing and cheerful nature, which is drastically different from the female persona's reserved and quiet demeanor. SHIKI explains the division between the two personalities, and mentions that the two have been out of sync lately. After the meeting, Mikiya goes to Shiki's home, only to find her standing in front of a headless corpse, blood still spurting from the neck. Splattered in blood, Shiki utters: "Be careful Kokutou-kun.. A terrible premonition can bring about a terrible reality."
Mikiya is questioned by the police regarding the incident, but he maintains that he did not see Shiki there and refuses to give any further information, even to Daisuke. Mikiya then regularly camps out in the bamboo grove outside Shiki's home in an effort to 'prevent' her from committing any more murders.
After a while of this, Shiki confronts him with a knife and chases him through the grove and out onto the street, pinning him down with the knife to his throat. When she asks him to say something, all Mikiya can reply with is: "I do not want to die." To which Shiki warmly smiles and replies: "I want to kill you."
When she raises her knife and moves to stab him, she finds she's unable to do so. Quite suddenly, she's attacked by Araya. A brief fight between the two ensues, but after Araya is wounded by Shiki, he notes that she's not fighting to kill but rather so she can flee. He allows her to do so, and Mikiya chases after her. Once he manages to catch her, she confesses to him that both Shiki and SHIKI like him, with this being the only other thing that SHIKI has known besides murder. As such, she feels that since he won't remove himself from her life, she will remove herself from his.
Fleeing to the end of the street, she throws herself in front of a passing car in an attempt to commit suicide. She fails in the sense that SHIKI dies in her place, to allow her to remain with Mikiya.
Chapter 4: The Hollow Shrine[]
Following her attempted suicide, Shiki finds herself floating in absolute nothingness, or 「 」. She remains in this state for two years, realizing that she is both dead and still alive. During this time, her body is in a coma where she is visited by her family and Mikiya. When she awakens, she immediately sees the lines of death around her and attempts to tear her eyes out, causing the other doctors to bandage her eyes. She refuses to talk to her family or the doctors tending to her, causing them to misdiagnose her with aphasia. She eventually begins to receive daily visits from Touko Aozaki, posing as a speech instructor. By night, Shiki is attacked by spirits hoping to gain control of her body. Eventually Touko puts up a rune, creating a ward that keeps them out. The day before her release, Touko explains the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception and how even if Shiki were to remove her physical eyes, the Mystic Eyes would still be active. Touko offers to teach her how to control the Eyes, but Shiki refuses. The following night, one of the spirits possesses a corpse and uses it to get through the ward, attacking Shiki. While Shiki at first allows it to strangle her, she, being reminded of SHIKI's sacrifice and what Touko had said about it earlier, fights back, knocking them both out the window. Touko comes to her aid, but finds that her fire spell is not enough to kill the corpse. Shiki kills the corpse with her Eyes, but the spirit possessing it attempts to possess her. Rather than be possessed, Shiki kills the invading spirit using her Eyes by stabbing herself in the chest. Shiki accepts Touko's offer to train her to use the Eyes, and begins work under her after her release.
Chapter 3: Remaining Sense of Pain[]
In time, Garan no Dou is approached by the head of the Asagami clan, who hires them to find and kill his step daughter, Fujino Asagami, after she awakens to her power and brutally kills the delinquents who were abusing her. One morning, she is called by Mikiya to tell his sister, Azaka Kokutou, that he would be unable to meet with her at Ahnenerbe. Arriving at the restaurant, she meets Fujino with Azaka, but notes to herself that she could not be the target, as she does not sense the desire to kill from her. After squabbling with Azaka, she leaves. In time, she comes across Fujino again after she kills another man linked to the delinquents who tried to attack her. Shiki prepares to fight Fujino, but leaves after noticing that Fujino can't feel pain. Shiki eventually receives word that Fujino killed a passerby unrelated to her tormenters and, disapproving of such senseless slaughter, vows to kill her. The two fight in the interior part of the Broad Bridge and Shiki is able to "kill" her Mystic Eyes of Distortion using her own Eyes, but not before Fujino tears off her left arm. Fujino awakens to Clairvoyance and collapses the bridge around them. Both manage to escape, but Fujino loses her powers and regresses to a childlike state of mind. Shiki stabs her, killing her appendicitis, but lets her live. Afterwards, Touko constructs Shiki a Magical Prosthetic Arm to replace the one she lost.
Chapter 1: Overlooking View[]
In August 1998, Mikiya brings over some ice cream while visiting Shiki, but Shiki is not happy to see him and says that she does not like ice cream so she decides not to eat it.
Around September 1998, Shiki had a conversation with Touko about the recent suicide cases in the Fujou building. Shiki found out that Mikiya has been in an unconscious state since he investigated the Fujou building. When Shiki went to the building, she noticed a ghost floating around it.
She struggles as she witness Mikiya's state and hurries to the Fujou building. She witnesses another suicide from a high school student. She encounters Kirie Fujou's spiritual form who tries to curse her to death through her own puppet arm. Shiki cuts off her arm while Kirie retreats.
Back in Garan no Dou, Touko repairs her puppet arm with more improvements. Returning to her apartment, knowing that she can't live without Mikiya, she becomes determined to save him from his slumber. She faces Kirie and ghosts of the other girls; Shiki quickly kills them using her Eyes.
After the physical Kirie's suicide, Mikiya wakes up and feels as if he had slept for a very long period of time. Shiki demands that he stay over at her house to finish the ice cream he bought.
Chapter 5: Paradox Spiral[]
In the middle of October 1998, Shiki saved Tomoe Enjou from a gang. When she first met Tomoe, she noticed him to be an empty person who seemed to have lost his future and wanted to die. He asked Shiki to help hide him and to his surprise Shiki gave her permission. As Tomoe was mesmerized by Shiki's beauty, he revealed to Shiki that he murdered someone, to which Shiki remarks that she is also a murderer but she finds it hard to believe that Tomoe killed someone. Despite this, she still allowed Tomoe to stay in her apartment.
While staying at Shiki's apartment, Tomoe installed new locks for her apartments and handed the key over to her, though Shiki claims she does not need it. They developed a daily routine where Tomoe goes out at daytime and Shiki goes for night strolls. As Tomoe stays with Shiki, they develop a close bond.
When Shiki came back from her nightly strolls, Tomoe sensed Shiki's urge to kill but Shiki claims there is no meaning in killing him. She reveals that she is seeking to kill someone when she goes out for her nightly strolls. Tomoe asked if Shiki has any friends, Shiki points out and angrily complains about Mikiya.
Tomoe notices Cornelius Alba following Shiki and later warns her about him. When Tomoe confessed his feelings for Shiki, Shiki jokes about it until Tomoe insists that he is serious. Shiki asked if Tomoe was willing to die for her sake, Tomoe confirms that he is willing to die by Shiki's hand. Tomoe reveals to Shiki the reasons behind the murder he committed; he explained his recurring dream where his mother killed him and out of desperation, he killed her and escaped. Shiki brushes this off saying she does not want to take his life as there is still no meaning in killing him.
When Shiki goes to Garan no Dou, Mikiya hands over Kanesada Kuji to Shiki. She tries to show Mikiya the katana but Touko forbid her from doing so, explaining that the katana could easily cut down Garan no Dou's bounded field. Garan no Dou was investigating the Ogawa Apartment Complex case and the family residence list. Shiki asked Mikiya and Touko if they had information about the Ogawa complex and learned that Touko was the designer for the building and Tomoe's family name was listed in the residence list.
As Shiki returns to her apartment, she sees Tomoe, who didn't appear for a week after she rejected him. She assembles her katana Kanesada Kuji and listens to Tomoe's worries about how he saw his mother alive. Shiki told Tomoe to take her to his home at the Ogawa complex. They rode there in the Harley motorcycle that Shiki borrowed from Touko.
As they arrived, Shiki noticed some abnormalities in the building. When they entered Tomoe's apartment, they witnessed the re-enactment of the death of the Enjou family. Shiki explains the Ogawa apartment complex's oddities and takes Tomoe to his real apartment where he supposedly killed his parents, where they found his parents rotted corpse. Souren Araya sends the resident puppets against them, though Shiki successfully kills them. Shiki meets Araya a second time when he sneaks behind her. Shiki had difficulties reading Araya's lines of death and was defeated by him. Shiki was captured by Araya and was imprisoned within a bounded field isolated from the real world. Touko, Mikiya and Tomoe began working to help free Shiki.
While Mikiya was to distract the enemy as a decoy, Tomoe's role was to sneak into Araya's workshop and help free Shiki as well as return Kanesada Kuji to her. Before Tomoe confronts Araya, he leaves Kanesada Kuji in the elevator.
Shiki regains consciousness and is able to cut down the barrier entrapping her by cutting its lines of death with her fingers, breaking free of her imprisonment and causing Araya to suffer pain from inside as the Ogawa Apartment is linked to his body. Shiki steps out of the elevator and faces Araya in the flesh with Kanesada Kuji. Shiki thought she would enjoy her battle with Araya but she realizes that the reason she wants to kill him is only because she can't stand his existence. She easily outmatches Araya in battle and she claims that Araya's downfall is caused by Tomoe. Araya tries to crush her by collapsing the apartment complex, but Shiki reaches Araya as he falls and stabs him on his line of death. Before landing on the ground, he activates a bounded field, saving Shiki in the process.
In her dream, she meets Tomoe inside a diner. As they both enjoy their time in the diner, the two are suddenly called away, finally bidding each other farewell. While waking up, she hears Mikiya unlocking her apartment with Tomoe's key. Mikiya was surprised to see Shiki awake and she calls him a trespasser. Mikiya tells Shiki about the apartment's demolition and Shiki embarrassingly demands Mikiya to hand over his house key.
Chapter 6: Oblivion Recorder[]
Chapter 7: Murder Speculation (Part 2)[]
Kara no Kyoukai: Future Gospel[]
One night during January 1996, SHIKI, unbeknownst to a "sleeping" Shiki, wandered about at night while enjoying his freedom and motivated by a masochistic abandonment to kill or be killed. He had been contemplating Shiki's future happiness, her role being to suffer the contradictions of her life while he remained unconcerned. He eventually perceived the ultimate solution to saving her was that he must disappear. He knew that this was his ultimate end, allowing him to enjoy the night without hesitation, but he still did not want to die deep down in his heart.
He was not afraid of dying because it would not cause her or the body to meet with death. He was instead frightened about the uncertainty of Shiki's future. While walking, waiting for an excuse to kill with the switchblade in his pocket, he was called out to by Mother of Mifune, a fortuneteller that was rumored to help people avoid an unlucky future. Amused by the fortuneteller and hoping to get a reason to kill, he allowed her to predict his future, asking her how to avoid it. Though he wished to kill her, waiting for her last words to provide the reason, her prediction instead surprises him.
The Mother of Mifune declared that he had no future no matter how he struggled, causing him to declare her as a true fortuneteller. She could only apologize for his fate, and the revelation caused his urge to kill and freedom to be drawn away. Though it was bleak, he turned away her comfort and decided to simply take it as it is because he had never expected to be saved. She held him there, saying that he had a rare future even if he was destined to die. She was perplexed, telling him that even though he would disappear soon, down a dark way where nothing will remain or be saved, that his dream will continue to live.
This news, the future that he desired, brought both a faint joy and pain to him. Telling the fortuneteller to live long, he left for home while contemplating the prediction. Shiki falling in love with someone was the answer to her happiness, though he would never have that for which he yearned. He had been afraid of uncertainty, but Shiki and Mikiya's sworn future meant that there would be events that continued on in the future. He felt that his future was bleak, but this was just like him, allowing him to laugh innocently and sing in the pouring rain back home.[21]
Möbius ring[]
In August 1998, during one of her walks, Shiki comes across Meruka Kuramitsu before one of his bombings. Fearful that she would reveal his identity, Meruka began to pursue and set traps for Shiki using his ability to see the future, even setting traps in areas that Shiki visits by chance, and sends her a cellphone to communicate with her. However, Shiki survives the bombings, forcing him to come out of hiding and personally witness his latest trap so that he can see her charred body after the explosion, as his visions predict. However, Shiki cuts through his right eye's ability to see the future, causing him to lose his ability to make accurate predictions and thus encounters unforeseen events, such as the bombs he set being delayed by five minutes.
After dealing with Meruka, Shiki meets with Mikiya at Ahnenerbe, who was waiting for her there and speaking with Shizune Seo.
Kara no Kyoukai: Final Record[]
The real Shiki appears only once at the end to remove the film from the sentient projector that traps Shizune, Azaka, Fujino, and Misaya.
Melty Blood[]
Shiki appears as an exclusive playable character and a secret boss in story mode for the PlayStation 2 version of Melty Blood Actress Again along with Melty Blood Actress Again: Current Code. Her stage is the bamboo forest outside of her childhood home and its background music is her theme from the Kara no Kyoukai movies.
In Actress Again she appears as a secret boss in story mode (using Eclipse Moon Style) by defeating 6 opponents in a row with a perfect (though if you defeat 4 opponents in a row with a perfect, she will either use Crescent, Full or Half Moon) but when using Shiki Nanaya or Neco-Arc, she will be a normal opponent.
In Actress Again: Current Code she is no longer a secret boss but a normal character with Archetype:Earth replacing her as the secret boss. She is in a dream and has traveled to a parallel world through her connection to the Root, and although White Len speculates that the Counter Force has summoned her to destroy the Dust of Osiris, she was actually instinctively led by 「Shiki Ryougi」 to destroy a "being similar to her in nature". Although she kills Tohno Shiki at the end of her storyline, she realizes that he was not the one that she was looking for, then runs into Archetype:Earth who reveals that Shiki's target is none other than herself. Shiki recognizes that Archetype:Earth has no death then jumps into a deadly struggle.

Fate/EXTRA[]
The version of Shiki in Fate/EXTRA is similar in nature to her Melty Blood counterpart, she appears as a guest boss. She appears after Taiga makes a wish upon the Tiger Thermos found for her by Hakuno Kishinami. She is classified neither as a Servant or a Master, and her existence causes the air to continuously warp like a human moan. She gives off a murderous aura far above that of a human, and while she is not a Heroic Spirit, she is called a demon; AramitamaWP (荒御霊?), a being who dies, kills, and curses; and Death itself by the Servants.
She does not like existing within the Moon Cell, and wishes to leave as soon as possible. She has been sent to kill one hundred Servants for an unknown reason in order to return to her world, but she assures that it is nothing personal. She notes that she has already killed ninety-nine, and that Hakuno's Servant will be her one hundredth. She does not care about Masters, so she is willing to let Hakuno be if their Servant dies willingly. She is called "Monster" when fought, and her special ability is called Amalavijñāna: Boundary of Emptiness. When faced against Archer, she claims she wanted to take Kanshou & Bakuya for her own.[22]
After being defeated, she contemplates that her journey is not yet over, thanks Hakuno for setting her free, and notes that she would like to have a similar fight again. It seems that she is warped elsewhere, and the Servants believe she has been flung through time, either to the past or the future. Archer speculates that she is some form of spirit connected to the Moon Cell's Holy Grail War while Caster commented her to be connected to the dark side of the moon.
- Twin Belfry (双ね鐘楼, Kasane Shōrō?, localized as "Twin Towers") - It inflicts physical damage on an enemy. She will always use this at the beginning of the battle.
- Suspended Esoterica (奥義を止める, Ōgi wo Tomeru?) - Magic damage ignores GUARD and seals enemy Skills. The effect is permanent and cannot be cured.
- Barrier Break (防壁を門, Bōheki wo Mon?) - Magic damage ignores GUARD and seals enemy GUARD. The effect is permanent and cannot be cured.
- Decrease Vigor (練気を下る, Renki wo Kudaru?) - Magic damage ignores GUARD and seals enemy BREAK. The effect is permanent and cannot be cured.
- Hero Slayer (仕手を殺す, Shite wo Korosu?) - Magic damage ignores GUARD and seals enemy ATTACK. The effect is permanent and cannot be cured.
- Amalavijñāna: Boundary of Emptiness - Results in a Game Over unless blocked by Rho Aias.
Fate/Grand Order[]
- Main article: Shiki Ryougi (Assassin)
In addition to being summoned as a Servant, the living Shiki appears in the Mahoutsukai no Yoru collaboration event. In 2001 she, Mikiya, and Mana all visit a mountain inn for a vacation. They reserve the entire fifth floor for themselves.[23]
Other appearances[]
She makes brief cameos during in Carnival Phantasm and a small appearance in Episode 12 as she is seen cooking at the Ahnenerbe party.
She makes a cameo appearance in Capsule Servant, she appears in Shirou and TOHSAKA ending as a background character.
In Type-Moon's April Fools' Day 2013, she appears in Back Alley Satsuki, a parody of Saint SeiyaWP. She is a gold heroine of rabbit to protect the fourth temple and she is known as Shiki Ryougi, the Decapitating Bunny (首斬りバニー両儀式, Kubikiri Banī Ryōgi Shiki?). Her costume was designed by ufotable. Including Ciel, she is able to decapitate every character other than Mysterious Heroine X, who protects herself with Avalon. She also appears in Fate/Ace Royal as a Heroic Spirit, she is qualified to be summoned as Saber, Assassin and Berserker class.
In Tsukihime, the Ryougi family is mentioned by Hisui. She says that it is part of a bloodline of "demon hunters".
In The Adventures of Lord El-Melloi II, Shiki disagrees with Mikiya's decision to help the Yakou family and so has temporarily left town as her way to protest his choice. After she finally came back, she killed the mist of Mt. Kuchinawa where the Yakou live so that Mikiya can get out without a problem in his car, because he is a normal person he would have been killed by it had she not killed it.[24]
Abilities[]
Combat[]
Against normal humans, Shiki has shown that she is a fair combatant without a weapon. She was able to easily defeat the group of teenagers pursuing Enjou Tomoe in Paradox Spiral and was able to toy with four men for a time in Murder Speculation (Part 2).
Shiki possesses heightened physical abilities, enhancing her mobility in combat. She apparently has enough self-discipline to endure a great deal of pain, since she did not stop a charging attack against Fujino when her arm was twisted in midair. This arm was later replaced by a prosthetic crafted by Touko. She is also able to trace the Lines of Death with her fingers as long as the opposing object is not physical in nature, being able to cut through Souren Araya's Bounded Fields easily.
Magical Prosthetic Arm[]
Shiki has a Magical Prosthetic Arm that allows her to grab things from a distance, and also affect intangible objects. When she went up against Kirie Fujou, who was a ghost that had several other ghostly figures under her control at the time, Shiki used her Magical Prosthetic Arm to grab her in her ghostly form. It has been stated by Touko that her second arm prior to going up against Kirie will be twice as strong as the original, and that it would take an elephant to destroy it. It also showed great durability when Shiki was running at high speed and jumped off of a building and landed on the other building, grabbing the roof as she landed. Shiki had to cut off her first Prosthetic Arm because a ghost was grabbing it and was going to throw her off the Fujou building. In the movies, Shiki's puppet arm has a hidden compartment to store a secondary knife.
Swordsmanship[]
She was trained by her father from a young age. Without her self-suggestion, her overall ability in swordplay is about equal to Taiga Fujimura.[25] Her most notable ability, self-suggestion, restructures her body starting from the brain to become purely for combat; her muscles act in a way unbefitting that of a living being and her blood vessels adjust themselves so that Shiki does not even have to breathe. All functions of the body needed as a "human" are removed in favor of functions needed to be a weapon. Araya notes that in this sense she's not a knife-fighter, but a swordsman; and whereas she can only strike within three meters with a knife, her range triples to nine meters with a katana. Araya notes that if Shiki was not severely injured from their previous battle, he would have been killed instantly. To the astonishment of Araya, Shiki ceases being Shiki and there is a change in her "vessel" once Shiki uses her autosuggestion, implying a personality swap to that of 「Shiki Ryougi」. Once Shiki uses her self-suggestion, she is able to battle demons even without the use of her Mystic Eyes, and can even see into the future like Seo Akira.[26] Nasu states that a battle between the katana-armed Shiki and the knife-wielding Shiki would be much like a fight between Shiki and one of the puppets at the Ogawa Apartment Complex.[27]
She later proves that she is in the level of Sword Saints, as a future copy of her was able to attack a weakened Aoko Aozaki at 60% power[28] and kill her in close-combat without the element of surprise, while it is stated that a regular swordmaster would be unable to compete against Aoko's magic beams. Even though Shiki noted that the future copy skill with the sword doesn't measure up, it was still considered to definitely be in the Sword Saint class. Aoko also states that, as a Sword Saint, Shiki is able to cut anything, which she did by cutting powerful curse Bounded field with just an antique katana and without using her Mystic Eyes.[29]
In Paradox Spiral, she wields a katana called Kanesada Kuji (九字兼定, Kuji Kanesada?), a five-hundred year old sword that has gained a large amount of Mystery due to its old age; merely unsheathing the sword would obliterate the bounded field that Touko set on the Garan no Dou. The sword was broken when it landed on Araya, and repairing or reforging the sword would lose the "history" and abilities that it previously had.[30]
Mystic Eyes of Death Perception[]
With her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, she can see the lines of a target's death that can act as both the "points" and the "lines" that Shiki Tohno sees.[31] A cut along any line will bifurcate the object, no matter the sharpness of the cutting tool used, and certain lines would result in instant death for the target. Her abilities extend to cutting things with no physical existence, such as Fujino Asagami's manifestations of her telekinetic powers. Unlike the other Shiki, Ryougi shows no definite proof after her release from the hospital that the use of her eyes causes mental strain on her brain, leading to the hypothesis that one's mentality greatly affects whether or not the brain can handle the power of the eyes. It does not matter if the target has a spiritual body like a Servant or they are dead like the ghosts surrounding Kirie Fujou, as it only matters if they are "living" in the sense that they can interfere with the current world. She has a hard time with Souren Araya's ŚarīraWP because it belonged to an enlightened one who achieved "becoming extinguished, alive." Killing it using the lines of death would require her to decipher advanced "lines of death" levels higher than the normal concept of death.[32] It's revealed by Touko Aozaki that her eyes are actually linked to the Root, the 'origin of all things.' Consequently, as a user of the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception it can be said she is several ranks higher than Shiki Tohno, who can be said to be her polar opposite.[33]
Connection to the Root[]
Her third personality born from the body can be said to be directly connected to the Root, and she can even be called the Root itself. While Shiki can see the Root with her Mystic Eyes, 「Shiki Ryougi」 can go even deeper, connecting to where all cause and effect begin and everything and nothing exist.[19] She claims the ability to do anything she wishes, as being connected to it makes her an equivocal existence and she have a equivalence to a transcendence of abstract level of existence. She claims restructuring the laws governing atomic matter, going back in time to change the evolution and development of all life, and reconstructing the orders and laws of the world would be easy for her to accomplish. It is not actually changing the existing world, but instead annihilating the old world with a new world.[34]
Despite this ability, her combat ability is only possibly around the level of Ciel, allowing her to manage a defensive fight against a being on the level of a Servant. She is still much stronger than the regular Shiki, who holds no hope in even competing with a Servant defensively.[35] However, this was likely retconned as regular Shiki was able to kill 99 servants in Fate/EXTRA.
Even if outdated, she is noted to be the second strongest being in the Nasuverse when not including Servants, under Arcueid Brunestud and above Primordial Demons.[36]
Cooking[]
When she is serious, Shiki is potentially the greatest human cook in the Nasuverse, surpassing even Kohaku. However, she is rarely ever serious.[37]
Development[]
Reception[]
- In the Second character popularity poll of Tsukihime, Shiki was ranked 34th.
- In the Third character popularity poll of Tsukihime, Shiki was ranked 37th.

[] Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet - Encyclopedia: Ryougi Shiki [Person's name], p.042-043 [T] Ryougi Shiki [Person's name]
A girl in her late teens. One of the main characters of the story, possessing the characteristic of Yin. A killer who could not kill.
She used a coarse male speech pattern, and used Ore as her first person pronoun. She had a cold personality and appeared to care about nothing.
She had only worn kimono up to the age of 16, but due to the comment of her high school peers, she bought a leather jacket. After that, she began this strange getup of wearing a leather jacket over a kimono during winter.
Although it seemed that she was concerned about her attire, but really she did not care.
She just wore what she wanted, but the result was consistently "always kimono", "laced-up boots or geta", "...red leather jacket".
Mean, heartless, and merciless, but occasionally she would react in a surprisingly feminine way. Like Mikiya said, it you want to compare her to an animal, it would be a rabbit or something like that.
She was the second child of House Ryougi, who artificially induced dual personalities in their offspring. Due to her confirmed multiple personality, her brother was abandoned as the heir in favour of her.
Because she was aware of her abnormality since childhood, Ryougi hated people as well as herself. Although she developed a cold personality as a result, secretly she wished to experience a normal person's happiness.
.... Ever since she encountered the materialization of that dream, her fate changed drastically.
She had a male personality known as "SHIKI", but he was lost due to an accident. Subsequently she developed the ability to perceive Lines of Death. Was it a compensation, or was it a sequelae of the accident?
After awakening from the coma, she did not have a realistic sense of living. Although in frustration she attempted to feel this sense of living through killing, due to various accidents and benevolent obstructions she never succeeded.
With a uncertain sense of living, this listless girl continued to come to Touko's office day in and day out.
By the way, Shiki's emotions towards people were quite animalistic.
Regardless of good or evil, Shiki first divided people into "those she can be with" and "those she cannot be with".
For those "she can be with", she would stay with them even if she hated them. Touko was "dislike", Azaka was "like", such were the categories.
As to Mikiya, in the words of Shiki, "I don't know".両儀式【りょうぎ―しき】【人名】

Although it was dual personality, Shiki and SHIKI were not a result of Dissociative Identity Disorder. For both of them, it was a matter of whose actions take priority.
Even though SHIKI was responsible for Ryougi Shiki's destructive impulses, he was not a pure killer. It could be said that SHIKI despised his own impulses and voluntarily became Shiki's subordinate personality.
However, the relationship changed with the appearance of Kokutou Mikiya. At the time of Ryougi Shiki's accident, SHIKI acted as the substitute and disappeared.

A magical construct capable of suppressing the power of Mystic Eyes.
Since Mystic Eyes are a power derived from the oculus, Mystic Eyes Killers are commonly made into glasses. The glasses Touko wore are also Mystic Eyes Kilers.
The protagonist of Tsukihime, Tohno Shiki, acquired Mystic Eyes Killers crafted by Touko from someone. They relieved him of the unbearable sight of Death, and allowed him to live normally again.
This also reflected just how self-abusive Ryougi Shiki was, declining the Mystic Eyes Killers. No... it was more an episode that reflected her heart of clear water.
As a side note, Touko poured an obscene amount of money into constructing Ryougi Shiki's Mystic Eyes Killers, but Shiki shoved them back saying "Why should I do it to please you?"
The reason Shiki declined the Mystic Eyes Killer was the same as when she refused to wear the uniform of Reien Girls' Academy.魔眼殺し【まがんごろし】【装飾】

Nasu: The difference is enough that if there was a Rakkyo Warriors game, Katana Shiki would be the player and Knife Shiki would be the opponent.
Takeuchi: Amazing!! Umm… It is amazing, right?
Nasu: Let's take the fight scene from the middle of Chapter 5 as a convenient example. In this scenario, Shiki would be "Katana Shiki", and all the apartment residents would be "Knife Shiki".Q.
- ↑ Fate/Grand Order - Mahoutsukai no Yoru Collaboration Event - Chapter 4: Twelve Lickle So-and-Sos

Q: Will it be possible to repair the antique katana now that it’s broken?Q: Will it be possible to repair the antique katana now that it’s broken? <Yasunosuke>
Nasu: Even if it was reforged, the years it had accumulated before would be lost.
Takeuchi: A lot of people asked this question. Since I thought it was going to be Shiki’s final weapon, too, I was pretty shocked when it broke almost as soon as it finally appeared!
Nasu: That’s how ultimate weapons should be. - ↑
Kara no Kyoukai - Chapter 1: Overlooking View - Fujyou Kirie "One on each of her legs, one on her back, and one point on her left chest. The cutting section called death can be certainly seen. The one on her chest would be a good one to aim for. That would be an instant kill." - ↑

Q: Since Saber and Gilgamesh have physical bodies in Fate/Stay Night, can Shiki see lines on them?
Q: Since Saber and Gilgamesh have physical bodies in Fate/Stay Night, can Shiki see lines on them? (@LestatDusk)
A: Not just when they have a physical body, the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception are effective even when they're in spiritual bodies. For Shiki [Ryougi], if the opponent can be recognized as "living" (not "life", but "live"), she can see the lines of death. For example, the ghosts in Overlooking View were dead, but they were "living" in the sense that they can interfere with the current world.
Also, why she didn't succeed against the Sarira in Araya's arm is because it belonged to an enlightened one who achieved "becoming extinguished, alive." To kill it by the lines of death means she has to decipher advanced "lines of death" levels higher than the normal concept of death. But what's sad about bones is that rather than having to do that, they'll turn into ash if you burn them. If you have time to be using Death spells, level up and beat it physically.Q:セイバーとギルガメッシュは、フェイト/ステイナイトでは肉体をもっているので、シキは彼らの死の線を見ることができますか?
[] Tsukihime Dokuhon PlusPeriod - TSUKIHIME Dictionary: Ryougi Shiki [Person's name], p.190 Shiki Ryougi [Person's name]
The protagonist of Kara no Kyoukai. Able to see lines of death, just like Tohno Shiki.
She wears a traditional kimono paired with a leather jacket and high-laced boots.
Though she always carries a knife, her true talent is with the katana.
The last name "Ryougi" and first name "Shiki" both have an appropriate meaning. Consequently as a user of the mystic eyes of death perception it can be said she is several ranks higher than Tohno Shiki, who is pretty much her polar opposite. In fact, his personality is actually close to Kokutou Mikiya's.
For more details on this Shiki, please consult Kara no Kyoukai.

Kara no Kyoukai - Original Epilogue. "Right, that is Shiki's power. Like Fujino she can see channels that normal people can't see, she is able to see the spiral of origin with her eyes. But, I can go even deeper. No... maybe I myself am that spiral."
".... Spiral of origin, its where all cause and effect begin, where everything and nothing exist, that is my true identity. Even though we are just connected, but since I am part of it, I too am an equivocal existence, right? That is why I can do anything..hmm like restructuring the laws governing atomic matter, or go back in time to change the evolution and development of all life, to reconstruct the orders and laws of this world is easy for me too. Not making change to the existing world, but rather annihilate the old world with a new world."
