Shiki Ryougi (両儀 式, Ryōgi Shiki?), Class Name Assassin (アサシン, Asashin?), is an Assassin-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.
Profile[]
Identity[]
A Pseudo-Servant who exists through her dreaming an irregular Singularity.[2] As with the rest of the world after 2016, Mifune City has been reduced to ruins along with its inhabitants. Shiki is a special case where "she’s dead, but not quite", her body burned but not yet completely burnt away. She exists in a state right before dying, asleep and seeing a dream that became the Ogawa Apartments seen in the Singularity. She recognizes her state as a dream, but if she wakes up she will die along with everyone else in the city. Should she stay asleep within the dream, she will avoid the destruction of humanity and be able to return to her original world.[3]
Appearance[]
Dressed in a blend of Japanese and Western clothes.[2]
Personality[]
At a first glance, she appears to have a cold, exclusive character. Although she has a mannish way of speaking and conducts herself as if a man, she is different from a "cross-dressing beauty" since her true nature is helplessly feminine. Despite putting airs of an outlaw, she is a lonely person with an elder sister disposition at her core, so she ends up thoroughly taking care of those she took a liking to.[2]
Relationships[]
- Shiki Ryougi (Saber)
- "Was that me just now? ...Maybe I've been working too hard since I got here... How pathetic of me to be seeing ghosts..." [4]
- Fujino Asagami (Archer)
- "So Asagami's here now, too. Huh. That's good to know. She might seem like a dangerous woman, but she's pretty reliable. She's a bit of a loose canon, though. So be careful. She's incredibly opinionated, and it really doesn't take much to set her off since she's pretty lacking in empathy. One wrong step, and things'll go sideways pretty quick."[4]
- Tawara Touta
- "You sure are an interesting fellow... What's with that sack? You can pull food out as much as you want? No matter how exotic the food may be? ...Interesting, show us what you can do then."[4]
- Henry Jekyll and Hyde
- Very interesting as a senpai with two personalities. Jekyll’s lack of hope of getting ahead is irritating her... That’s how it looks like, but it seems she’s comforting him."Takeuchi)[1]
- Mephistopheles
- Although noisy, you can’t disregard him for speaking funny. "But isn’t using scissors as a weapon hard? A policy? I see... Then it can’t be helped... Standing out as a character is important for murderers..."Takeuchi)[1]
- Edmond Dantès
- She won’t say where they match, but they’re Servants of the same type."That romantic power isn’t half-bad. That aside, how about you speak in a way that’s easier to understand?"Takeuchi)[1]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Event: Garden of Order[]
Due to her connection with the Ogawa Apartment, Shiki is summoned to the distortion centered around it.[5]
Shiki first encounters Ritsuka and Mash after destroying some ghosts. The pair try to talk with her, but she refuses and attacks them. Shiki eventually realizes they aren't hostiles and stops the fight. She apologizes for her actions and starts to leave. When Ritsuka stops her, she declares she's going to destroy the apartment to stop the undead within from spreading out to the neighborhood. The undead are running rampant due to the Servants living there. Explaining her circumstances, Shiki introduces herself and agrees to help Ritsuka and Mash. The group then enter the apartment.[5]
Investigating the first room, the group notice it's oddly cold despite the thermometer showing normal temperature. Musashibou Benkei attacks them for abandoning a respectable way of life. After Benkei is defeated and disappears back to Chaldea, Shiki realizes the room is the wrong one. Then, noticing Ritsuka's depressed face, she tells them there was no choice but to defeated Benkei. If they didn't, Benkei would've remained in the apartment and stayed in a negative state of mind.[6]
Shiki happily hums to herself while skipping down the hall. Mash asks her if the apartment was a mage's workshop built in secret. Shiki answers it was built publicly and explains it was designed to collect the deaths of its residents. They're reborn when morning comes and die when night falls in an endless loop. But the appearance of ghosts and Servants indicates the apartment's effects have spread to the outside world. The group then enters Room 102.[7]
They are greeted by Mephistopheles, who claims he lured Ritsuka's Servants to the apartment. He then attacks the group but is defeated. He disappears telling them to solve the mystery of the apartment. However, he reappears and explains it was his evil self who was killed. He reveals he was summoned into the apartment by Solomon. Mephistopheles then proceeded to split him into his evil and good selves. His evil self infiltrated Chaldea and convinced the Servants to come to the apartment. The Good Mephistopheles escaped from Solomon's contract and waited for the group to arrive. Now joined by Mephistopheles, the group continues its investigation.[7]
Shiki realizes the apartment is now collecting stuff unrelated to its original design and turning it evil. Henry Jekyll then appears and explains he is the manager of the corridor. He advises the group to stay on the first floor a little longer and invites them to stay in his room. When they reject his invitation, he turns into Mr. Hyde and attacks them. Shiki blocks his attack and is disappointed that he transformed, preferring to fight Jekyll.[8]
Returning to normal with his defeat, Jekyll claims he and Hyde were manipulated. He warns Ritsuka not to trust Mephistopheles and prepares to hand them the key to the next floor. However, he changes back into Hyde and attacks Ritsuka. Shiki blocks him and takes the key. She deduces he was always Hyde and only pretended to possess dual personalities. After Hyde disappears, Mephistopheles reveals Jekyll mutated upon his arrival until his main personality vanished. He explains the Servants are being affected by the apartment's residual resentments, changing their alignment as a result. The group then move to the 2nd floor.[8]
On the 2nd floor, the group remove Elizabeth Bathory from the apartment.[9] Next, on the 3rd floor, they remove Boudica.[10]
Nearly complete with their investigation of the 4th floor, the group is confronted by Artoria Alter. She warns them to leave as the floor above is filled with vengeful ghosts. The group accuses her of being the mastermind behind the incident. Artoria Alter then removes her armor in response to Mephistopheles saying she is a skeleton underneath. She agrees to forgive their disrespect if they can survive and prove their bravery to her.[11]
She stops the fight however upon realizing Shiki has the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, so she allows them to pass. She explains she's been weeding out those who can't handle the apartment's grudges. She reveals Solomon attempted to convert the apartment into a Singularity after recovering it from the incinerated history. This plan failed however as the person Solomon had sent to do so transformed the apartment into a tower that attracts and imprisons Servants to convert them into demons. Artoria Alter warns the apartment will someday become the Singularity called "Hell", though it has no bearing on the Incineration of Humanity. The group decide to rescue the remaining Servants. Shiki wants to move on quickly, believing that seeing Artoria Alter's large chest will only confuse their sense of scale. Artoria Alter accuses her of being disparaged over something she cannot obtain. Shiki responds by threatening to enter Artoria Alter's room, suspecting she cleans it daily. Artoria Alter denies she does and claims they'll die if they go in.[11]
Later, Ritsuka has the group investigate outside. After communications with Chaldea are cut, a Servant surrounded by darkness appears before them. He reveals the ghosts are souls who were unrewarded in life, and their regrets kept them from moving to the afterlife. So if Hell denies them, he'll create a new Hell with the apartment. He warns the group not to stand in his way and leaves. The group is then suddenly confronted by a ghost differing from the others. Shiki's appearance and personality changes in response to the ghost's nature as a defective Monster of Alaya. After destroying the ghost, she returns to normal after tripping over a tree root. She mistakes the victory as Ritsuka and Mash's, having no memory of it. Fou then gives her a key he found.[12]
On the apartment's 5th floor, the group enters the room where the Singularity's source is located. There they're welcomed by another evil Mephistopheles. Mephistopheles reveals a greater ghost called the Great Avici Hell, which draws in spirits and turns them into a pillar, is behind his evil self. Evil Mephistopheles asks Ritsuka why they're rescuing their Servants since they changed of their own will. He also says the distortion is safe to ignore since it's a fake Singularity. Even if the Foundations of Humanity are restored, the distortion will continue to exist outside the world gathering hatred and pain. Evil Mephistopheles then fights the group after Ritsuka responds they couldn't ignore the suffering inside the apartment. After his evil self is destroyed, Mephistopheles also disappears. Shiki states the apartment will return to its original state with the ghost gone. She then returns to Chaldea with Ritsuka and Mash.[13]
Later, the group returns to the apartment to return the remaining Servants to Chaldea. Entering a brightly lit room on the 6th floor, they encounter Frankenstein and Lu Bu. She decided to start wasting electricity after Nikola Tesla caused a power outage at Chaldea with his Noble Phantasm. Lu Bu helped her because she looks like his daughter. Taking note of complaints about frequent outages, Shiki and the others fight the room's tenants. After Frankenstein and Lu Bu return to Chaldea, Shiki reveals all the requests on her memo pad are to remove Servants illegally living in the apartment. As her family owns it, she came to the apartment on their behalf to collect rent. Ritsuka and Mash then help her with evicting the remaining Servants.[14]
Following the complaints on Shiki's memo pad, the group starts evicting the Servants from the apartment. They evict Anne Bonny and Mary Read for refusing to pay rent after becoming internet addicts thanks to Blackbeard.[15] With Scáthach's help, they evict Cú Chulainn for illegal gambling.[16] The group finds that Oda Nobunaga and Okita Souji's room has been warped by the former's Reality Marble, which is returned to normal after she's defeated.[17] The group evict Leonidas, whose fear of ghosts trapped him in his room.[18] They discover Mysterious Heroine X had crashed into the apartment to continue her hunt for Sabers, which prompts Shiki to switch personalities and fight her. After X retreats, Shiki returns to normal with no memory of what transpired. She then tells Ritsuka and Mash that all of the Servants have been removed from the apartment.[19]
Later, the group access the roof through the emergency exit, which Shiki unlocks with the key Fou gave her earlier. There they confront the mysterious Servant, whom they believe to be the distortion's mastermind behind the distortion. He declares even if the apartment disappears, his work would continue. The greater ghost from before then appears. Mash assumes it's another one, but the Servants corrects her that curses never disappear. He then declares the system of curses Solomon gave him is now complete. Mash senses the greater ghost has greater magical energy than before, and its resentment grows with each defeat. If its resentment keeps increasing at its current rate, the group will be unable to kill it. Shiki assures the others they can, as nothing can exist for eternity.[20]
After the ghost is destroyed, the Servant starts to flee by jumping off the roof. Shiki goes after him, but Romani warns the Servant is an illusion. Ritsuka stops her, and she kills the illusion with a thrown knife. As he disappears, the Servant reveals Solomon ordered him to transform the apartment into a Singularity. Instead, though he used it to fuel his need for vengeance by using the Servants' own desire for revenge. After the Servant disappears without giving his identity, Romani informs the group that the distortion will eventually disappear. Mash is curious about the Servant's identity, and wonders if they'll fight him again. Shiki asserts he may become an ally, claiming he has great love and hatred for humanity. She tells Ritsuka to come to her house if they lose her house, saying her family will hire them as an assistant. With the distortion now resolved, the group return to Chaldea.[20]
Abilities[]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Presence Concealment (C Rank): Cuts off presence as a Servant. Suitable for covert actions.[1]
- Independent Action (A Rank): The skill to act independently for a while without Magical Energy supply from the Master. A style of Independent Action that makes you think if she’ll somehow manage even if Master’s not here. However, no matter if it’s enough or not, I’ll disappear if it gets lonely so a Master is necessary, Mikiya-kun![1]
Personal Skills[]
- Mystic Eyes of Death Perception (A Rank): Among the many superpowers designated as Mystic Eyes, this is one of the highest grade. A superpower among superpowers, a rare item among rare items. Regardless of being organic or inorganic, it reads into the primary factor of death in "living" things and visualizes it as a phenomenon that can be interfered with. The world observed from the mystic eyes of direct death is landscape of ending filled with "lines of death", and a proper mental structure would have difficulties in daily life while facing this. Shiki usually makes a compromise with this bizarre field of vision by shifting the focal point and overlooking all things.[1][2]
- Mind's Eye (Fake) (A Rank): Tolerance to compensation due to visual interference. Also called a sixth sense, or foreboding, it’s prediction of danger by means of natural talent.[2]
- Yin-Yang (B Rank): Yin-yang spiral. To want to keep this alive is, in other words, to kill it; to want to fulfill this is, in other words, to injure it. Blessing and loss are two sides of the same coin. Just like the relationship between men and women. Residual sense of pain. This Shiki supplements Noble Phantasm by losing HP.[1][2]
Noble Phantasm[]
Shiki's Noble Phantasm is Vijñaptimātratā: Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. By opening the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception to the maximum, the target’s “lines of death” are severed. The target’s may have millions of life-span, recovery power that resurrects from a suspended state, or a stock of hundreds of lives, but since “the concept of death in the individual” is laid bare, a fatal wound is inflicted while ignoring their immortality.
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Shiki Ryougi was illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi in Fate/Grand Order.[2] Her scenario writer is Kinoko Nasu in Fate/Grand Order.[1]
Comment from Illustrator[]
"It’s a variously strange design now that I look at it again, but I’ve already come to a clean decision with those signs. I wanted the standing picture to be the strongest silhouette, so I went with the concept of remaking the cover image of Kodansha’s paperback edition." (Takashi Takeuchi)[1]

The Ryougi House is a pedigree with an old history that, for generations, has devoted itself to the research and experimentation of the "ideal human body"
The likes of "ego" is unnecessary to the ideal human.
It is fine so long you have the personality (soft) that can switch in accordance with the purpose at hand, and an almighty body that can accurately perform its commands.
Although such creed, conviction was proved at the end of several hundred years, that was something entirely different from what they had conceived.
Ryougi Shiki is the current heiress of the Ryougi House that was born as a result of all this.
Interlude
At a first glance, she appears to have a cold, exclusive character.
Although she has a mannish way of speaking and conducts herself as if a man, she is different from a "cross-dressing beauty" since her true nature is helplessly feminine.
Despite putting airs of an outlaw, she is a lonely person with an elder sister disposition at her core, so she ends up thoroughly taking care of those she took a liking to.
As for why she has a mannish way of speaking, why she is severe towards those with multiple personalities, please refer to the "novel・Kara no Kyoukai".
*for those who don't know 1: there is a pun here, 直死 (chokushi; roughly direct death) reads the same as 直視 (chokushi; meaning to stare, to directly look someone in the eye);
**can also be translated as "functioning"
***for those who don't know 2: this refers to that black and white circle that is a famous yin-yang symbol. Apparently, that thing was made having two fishes swimming around each other as a motif.
****I would understand if this was made by a native English-speaker, but to think that a Japanese came up with this pun..
