The Spiritual Tomb of Albion (霊墓アルビオン, Rei Haka Arubion?, also translated as "Spirit Tomb Albion") is an underground labyrinth beneath the Clock Tower of the Mage's Association in London. It is secret on the same level as the Wandering Sea's Concealed Laws of the Gods and Atlas' Seven Superweapons.[1]
Characteristics[]
The Spiritual Tomb of Albion was dug out long ago by the Dragon of Albion, a mountain-sized Dragon, which was trying to reach the Reverse Side of the World after previously refusing to go there with the other Phantasmal Species when the Age of Man arrived. As Mystery had receded from the surface, the gate from the surface to the Reverse Side of the World had already closed. Undeterred, the Dragon made to go there physically if he couldn't rely on Mystery, using its giant body to dig into the depths of the Earth, where traces of Mystery remains. However, it died en route, and its giant corpse fused with the earth, gradually turning into the labyrinth that is the Spiritual Tomb of Albion.[2]
The Spiritual Tomb of Albion is the source of many mystical resources that have disappeared aboveground for the Magi of the Clock Tower, and also home to Magical Beasts. The Clock Tower now uses it to mine magical resources, with the Secret Autopsy Division (秘骸解剖局, Hi Mukuro Kaibō-kyoku?) being the organization that investigates and excavates the labyrinth. It could be said to be the backbone of the Clock Tower.[2] There are only four entrances to the Spiritual Tomb of Albion throughout London, one of which is located on Charing Cross RoadWP, northeast from London's ChinatownWP in SohoWP.[3]
The number of entrances to Albion are incredibly few, and though each one is in the hands of the Management Department, the number of officially recognized excavators that attempt to sneak out Talismans from the Tomb is endless, thus necessitating their tight control. And though the official entrances have been locked down, a number of portals leading from the Tomb to the surface have appeared, leading to a slew of disappearances and graverobbings.[4] The reason for the appearance of these new entrances is because the coordinates of the Spiritual Tomb of Albion haven't been precisely recorded on the Texture of the Human Order, similar to the Wandering Sea and the Bermuda TriangleWP; therefore, it wanders about irregularly, changing coordinates in a way almost like the concept of quantum behavior in modern science. Because it does not need to depend on reality, it can appear almost anywhere: a part of Spirit Tomb Albion that was meant to be tens of kilometers below the earth could exist near the surface at the same time. These "bubbles" of Albion are unstable and quickly disappear after appearing.[5]
For Magi who are from young families or have poor quality Magic Circuits, the Spiritual Tomb of Albion is like a second chance. Even if they are a poor Magus, they can still make something of themselves by selling magical materials gathered within the tomb. However, the Secret Autopsy Division keeps tight control on who is allowed to enter and exit, so as to prevent smuggling. Apart from members of the Secret Autopsy Division or people with special permits, it is very difficult to leave the Spiritual Tomb once you enter. People who go into Albion spend years there living in the mining city, Magisfair. It's almost like a modern version of slavery. People who have managed to return to the surface, whether by waiting until their time was up or until they could pay their way out early, are called Survivors (生還者, Seikan-sha?).[6]
Layout[]
Located 10 kilometers below the surface is the Mining City Magisfair (採掘都市マギスフェア, Saikutsu Toshi Magisufea?), the uppermost level of the tomb. This is where the miners and excavators live.[7] It is managed by the Secret Autopsy Division - Management Branch (秘骸解剖局・管理部門, Hi Mukuro Kaibō-kyoku - Kanri Bumon?).[4] In it is the Composite Workshop Criegula (複合工房クリエグラ, Fukugō Kōbō Kuriegura?), a combination of many Magi's Magical Workshops, created by the Secret Autopsy Division - Materials Branch (秘骸解剖局・資材部門, Hi Mukuro Kaibō-kyoku - Shizai Bumon?) because they must mass produce the same items over and over.[8] Everyone in Albion fights to survive, and everyone is a Magus, making it the only place where a composite workshop could work without violating the rule of secrecy.[9] Apparently, the Criegula also once made Witch’s tools or something.[8]
The next layer, at 10-40 kilometers down, is the Great Magic Circuit (大魔術回路, Dai Majutsu Kairo?), otherwise known as Vein Corridor Od Vena (静脈回廊オドベナ, Jōmyaku Kairō Odobena?). It is Britain's Leyline cavern.[10] Magic Circuits are fused with the earth here but cannot be harmed by the excavating Magi, and so the excavations avoid them, forming various passages like corridors. This layer is inhabited by Magical Beasts, and the Magic Circuits are said to lead one to the Reverse Side. It is unknown if the Magic Circuits are from the Dragon, or if they already existed as a part of the earth.[7]
The third layer, 40-60 kilometers down, is the Ancient Heart (古き心臓, Furuki Shinzō?). The Dragon's heart here that was dug out was turned into a sacrificial hearth. The Bounded Fields here are so strong that no matter how fierce the battle, it wouldn't do a thing to the walls. Due to the natural Bounded Field of this area, the Dragon's body couldn't progress pass this point.[7]
60-80 kilometers down, the lowest point humans have reached in the Spiritual Tomb of Albion, is the Carillon Observatory (天文台カリオン, Tenmondai Karion?), the oldest room of the Clock Tower and where Sealing Designations are decided. The Dragon's head located here, now detached from the rest of its body, is kept "alive" by the Magical Energy in its eyes and continues trying to dig to Avalon. This Magical Energy was the reason Carillon Observatory was built here.[7]
Humans have not been able to investigate any further below. 80-400 kilometers below the surface is a fairy domain that humans are unable to step foot into.[7][11]
The Spiritual Tomb's entrance to Avalon would be at 2700 kilometers below the surface,[11] if the Dragon had been able to finish digging.
Role[]
Lord El-Melloi II Case Files[]
The Spiritual Tomb of Albion features heavily in the backstory of Doctor Heartless, who when he was young was betrayed by his fellow students and thrown down a hole in the labyrinth that led to the land of Fairies.[12]
A Grand Roll, a meeting between all the Lords of the Clock Tower, is called to vote on the matter of the redevelopment of the Spiritual Tomb of Albion. At the same time, Doctor Heartless accesses the Tomb to use the Dragon's vast amounts of Magical Energy to fuel his complicated ritual to transform his Servant Faker into Iskandar and at the same time turn Iskandar into a Divine Spirit.[13] Lord El-Melloi II, Gray, and many of their companions follow Heartless and Faker through the Spiritual Tomb to stop him.
Fate/Grand Order[]
Od Vena stretches across the Fairy Kingdom of Britain and can be used to reach any of its cities from underground. After the destruction of Sheffield by Morgan's army, Boggart and the survivors flee to a cave at Thorn Hill that leads into the Vein Corridor. Boggart tells Mash Kyrielight of it before he dies from his wounds. Mash, Habetrot, and Cú Chulainn use it to reach Norwich.[10]
Artoria and her companions later use it to travel to Avalon so they can forge Excalibur. While Albion failed to dig all the way down to the Reverse Side of the World in Proper History and died at the 80 kilometer mark underneath London, it did succeed in the Lostbelt and made a tunnel to the "D-Layer", the Inner Sea of the World, 2700 Kilometers down underneath the Lake District. Even so, Albion could not enter Avalon itself due to the passage being too narrow, forcing Albion to die above ground of exhaustion as it circled the empty sea of the world. Albion fell from the sky and landed in the Lake District right on top of the Spiritual Cave, its rotting corpse turning the Lake into a Dark Swamp of the same substance as Moss. Later, because Britain in the Lostbelt is dying with Cernunnos' awakening, this opens the road to Avalon, but as the world of Magecraft's most scared ground, few are able to enter. However, it allows Artoria, Mash Kyrielight, Ritsuka Fujimaru, and Senji Muramasa to be able to travel down the Spirit Cave Albion They are confronted by a remnant of Albion who challenges them to prove their worth.[11]

The department responsible for creating the tools used in the excavation and exploration of Albion. Unlike most Workshops, because they must mass produce the same items over and over, a number of magi’s Workshops have been combined to create the “Composite Workshop Criegula.” Apparently, this Criegula also once made witch’s tools or something.
In addition, this division is also responsible for actually progressing research into Albion. Since the disappearance of the criminal Gazamy at the end of the last century, Albion has continued to undergo extreme changes, working this department down to the bone.
- ↑ Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files Volume 10: case. Grand Roll (Lower) - Chapter 2 Part 2
