Identity[]
Taigong Wang in Fate/Grand Order: Curious Tales of Heroic Spirits - Ashiya Douman.
A famed tactician from ancient China. His surname is Jiang, given name Shang, courtesy name Ziya or Ya. While fishing on the north coast of the Weihe, a branch of the Yellow River, he met with King Wen of Zhou. King Wen declared he was the sage that the previous rulers of Zhou wished for, and accordingly started calling him by the title of Taigong Wang (meaning "my father's wish").[1][2]
He helped King Wen and King Wu of Zhou, putting high effort into toppling the Yin DynastyWP. For his services, Taigong was rewarded for with land on the Shandong PeninsulaWP, which he turned into the state of Qi, where he served as ruler during the Spring and Fall Warring States period. He's also known as Shi Shangfu, Jiang Taigong, or Jiang Ziya (姜子牙?).[1][2]
In the Ming Dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, he's portrayed as a Taoist: a being with paranormal abilities.[1]
History[]
Taigong Wang was discovered by Yuanshi Tianzun at a young age, who decided to take him as his disciple.[3] For decades, Taigong studied Taoist arts under him in the Kunlun Mountains.[4][5] While he was praised for being as talented as a Xian, he would frequently skip out on his training to go fishing, and to visit unfamiliar villages and sage worlds.[3]
After the Shenxian and Xiwangmu decleared the Beast Daji to be a great evil that threatened peace and tranquility all over the world, the former decided to send Taigong Wang out of the Xian Realm to help humanity take her down.
Following his instructions, Taigong Wang fought alongside the King Wu of Zhou to defeat the tyrannical King Zhou of Shang, putting an end to the Yin DynastyWP.[1][2][6] After being captured, Daji was executed by Taigong himself. However, before she was decapitated, she Cursed him as revenge. Unless he managed to scoop every single drop of blood that spilled from her head after cutting it off, he would be cursed with regret for all eternity.[7]
Later he founded the kingdom of Qi.[1]

Personality[]
He originated the Chinese proverb "spilled water won't go back to its tray", but when asked about it, he looked a bit sad.[1] He seems to have a prideful personality but justifying so. He is fairly confident in himself, both in his appearance and in his abilities, despite not being in his "Caster" form. He frequently makes allusions to how he could have been a "Grand Caster" if summoned in a different form. He is confident in himself that he has little regard for "tactics" because of his skill with Taoist Arts.
Funnily enough, when Daode Tianzun ordered him to leave the mountain and seal the gods, he remarked that it was because Jiang Ziya lacked the talent to further the Way of the Xian, but that he could seek success as a human. Taigong Wang holds firm that he was not fired, but that he was simply "destined to fight Yin and defeat Daji." Worth noting, is that after defeating Yin, he was offered to return to the mountain and surpass his talents or remain on earth.
He seems to have a certain amount of affection for fishing. There are several times when he is remarked to enjoy fishing and be a "fishing teacher" and "the most famed fisherman." He also finds the fact that he has to be careful about mentioning "Fangshi" (Tao Arts) around members of the Clocktower to be annoying.
He recognizes and admires other famed tacticians such as Odysseus and can challenge them to certain games of intellect such as backgammon. Another smart individual that he respects is Kiichi Hogen. He seems to have a distaste or dislike for Guan Yu out of jealousy, although he denies it, due to their conflicting natures as "symbols of military prowess."
When he sees Tamamo Servants, his fifth Bond Level remarks them to be attractive and that although he does not care for "looking at gorgeous women from a distance" - he finds himself to be tearing up almost. When he sees them, he can accidentally recognize them as Daji if caught off-guard. When meeting EMIYA or EMIYA Alter, he remarks about whether they are the Swords of Moye.
He seems to have no overt desire for the Holy Grail itself, and actually seems to find it to be a "terrible thing to have."
In his Tunguska manifestation, he was motivated to meet Daji again in his Daji hunt, but to everyone's surprise, Koyanskaya was a completely different person. Taigong Wang didn't express any opinions about it. He didn't say if he was disappointed or relieved. All he had was an ambiguous smile. Nikitich pressed him to apologize for his mistaken conjecture, but he stayed resolutely smiling without a word.[1]
The past contains no records of a romance between Taigong Wang and Daji. As told in The Investiture of the Gods, he defeated Daji and brought the Yin Dynasty to the end of its days. All companions fighting alongside him would unanimously say the thought of Daji seducing Taigong is not plausible. They're correct, she didn't seduce him. On the contrary, Daji hated him, and he ultimately defeated her with his own hands.[1]

- Tamamo-no-Mae
- "Daji! Hah! ...Oh... A-ah...! My apologies! I didn't realize it was you, Lady Tamamo-no-Mae. I apologize for my rudeness..."[5]

- Tamamo Cat
- "Why, isn't that...? Greetings, Lady Cat."[5]
- Relief. Despite the outward quirks, he would never mistake this one for anyone else.[2]
- Zhuge Liang
- "Ah, Lord Zhuge Liang. So you use fangshu as well? Eh? You've always tried to conceal that? How dare I say such things in the presence of a member of the Clock Tower, the pinnacle of the Western magecraft world...? Hahaha. What a thing to say Lord Zhuge Liang...what an uptight thing to say!"[5]
- Zhuge Liang / Sima Yi
- Curiosity. 30% interest in the tacticians who use fangshi, 70% interest in the people living in the present.[2]
- Nezha
- "Ah, Nezha! You look cute as ever. Have you settled down and gotten less rambunctious? You haven't? I see."[5]
- Huang Feihu
- "Huang Feihu, it's been a while. Hm? You're saying that since you're humanity's shadow, you're technically not the real Huang Feihu? Don't worry about the small things. Anyway, let's start by having a drink. We'll go from there."[5]
- Nezha / Huang Feihu
- Family. Friends for the longest time. No drink tastes the better than the one served amidst nostalgic chatter.[2]
- Chen Gong / Xu Fu / Zhang Jue / Sima Yi
- "Hmmm. Do you use a little bit of fangshu too? Well, do you?"[5]
- Xu Fu
- "Ah, a Taoist from the Qin dynasty. So you served Qin Shi Huang...hm, interesting. May I ask one thing? Do you have any interest in the sage world?...Guess not."[5]
- Wu Zetian (Swimsuit)
- "What a cute Taoist nun. Do you have any interest in the sage world? ...Guess not."[5]

- Katsushika Hokusai (Swimsuit) / Katsushika Hokusai
- "Ah, a fairy, you say? How wonderful! How bold, how fearless! Katsushika Hokusai in a swimsuit... Chaldea sure has all sorts of Servants. Hm? Oh hello, original Katsushika Hokusai. Why are you blushing? What? The swimsuit you didn't train in the Taoist arts and calls herself a fairy simply as something she's striving to be? I...see... No, I think that's nice. Yes, I actually love that. Motivation is everything! I do mean it! Keep on doing things like that! If need be, shall I change into a swimsuit too?"[5]
- Kiichi Hougen
- "Eh? Seriously? You deciphered the secret military arts I concealed as code in the "Three Strategies"? Really!? Well, that's a surprise. I am truly impressed. Well done, Kiichi Hogen!"[5]
- Amazement. He heard she deciphered the ultimate strategies he encrypted into the Three Strategies' text. And then she let the deciphered techniques get stolen? That's also impressive![2]
- EMIYA / EMIYA Alter
- "Lord EMIYA. Is that...is that by chance the treasured sword Mò Yé? It's not?"[5]
- Odysseus
- "Odysseus... So you are the legendary military strategist from the West. You seem a formidable opponent. Okay, let's have a match! In backgammon! Bring it on!"[5]
- Resignation. When competing in chess, backgammon, shogi, and the space marine game, he caught a glimpse of the man's competence as a strategist and tactician.[2]
- Merlin
- "Oooh! Amazing! The flowers are blooming! You are literally the Mage of Flowers, Lord Merlin. And you are certainly as handsome as the rumors say. Then again... (stares). I apologize if I offend you, but are you perhaps much more evil than you let on? Am I wrong?"[5]
- Empathy. He relates to him in every level, but believes himself to be not THAT bad.[2]
- Dobrynya Nikitich
- "It's been a while, Nikitich. Oh, I mean...it's a pleasure meeting you for the first time."[5]

Abilities[]
Taigong Wang claims that he never had the talent to master Taoism,[5] however, from a young age, he studied Taoist arts under Yuanshi Tianzun, one of the greatest deities in his mythology.[6][4][5] While Taigong frequently skipped out on his training to go fishing,[3] he was praised for being as talented as a Xian.[3] Back when he was in his prime, he managed things that would make even Shenxian proud.[4] In fact, during the Investiture of the Gods, Taigong was a practitioner of Taoism powerful enough to rival one,[12][4] a type of Chinese god different to Divine Spirits, similar to Scáthach-Skadi or the Twelve Machine Gods.[12] Basically, an incredibly advanced being with powerful Mystery and an overwhelmingly strong Spirit Origin and Spiritual Rank. While Taigong nonchalantly boasts about it, Goredolf Musik believes his claims to be true. He explains that if Taigong's exploits described in the Investiture of the Gods, like killing Gao Youqian in a single strike, are anywhere close to reality, then he would absolutely be strong enough to rival a shenxian. Furthermore, Taigong was a match to the Twelve Golden Immortals.[12]
Apart from being a great Taoist Mage, Taigong is also a renowned genius general and tactician.[8][6] He is the author of two of the Seven Military Classics,[6] making him the progenitor of modern military strategy.[8] During the Investiture of the Gods, he fought alongside the King Wu to defeat the tyranical King Zhou of Shang and his consort, the Beast Daji.[6] With the help of the Twelve Golden Immortals and King Wu's army,[3][13] Taigong managed to defeat the Beast. However, he describes it as a hellishly difficult ordeal, so he would rather not recall it or have to go through something similar ever again.[3] Nevertheless, thanks to his experience, he is regarded as a Beast hunter, a professional Beast exterminator.[9] In particular, he is a nine-tailed fox exterminator specialist.[3]
After the Shang dynasty came to an end, Yuanshi Tianzun offered him two options. Either to go back to the mountains to hone his skills beyond his natural abilities, eventually reaching the level of a Shenxian, or, on the contrary, to spend the rest of his life in peace in the Human World.[5] While Taigong doesn't reveal the choice he made,[5] he did in fact return to the Kunlun Mountains to one day achieve Immortality after killing Daji.[1][2][7] Furthermore, it is speculated that there might be a possibility of his Servant self being a Divided Spirit from his shenxian self, the original Taigong, just pretending to be a Heroic Spirit from the Throne of Heroes instead.[1][2] This might have been alluded to a few times throughout Tunguska Special Territory, where Taigong loosely used the terms Xian Realm and Yuanshi Tianzun to refer to the Throne of Heroes and the Human Order respectively while explaining who had dispatched him there.[8][3]
Despite having been summoned as a Rider, Taigong Wang is a man of many talents.[8] He has implied on several occasions that his most compatible Servant class is Caster, claiming that if he was summoned as one he could manifest as Grand Caster.[5][9][7] Furthermore, he believes that Grand Rider wouldn't be out of the question either.[9] On the other hand, Noah notes that since Taigong has not been summoned as a Caster, he currently can't be said to hold a Grand Servant rank.[16] However, it's unclear whether Noah meant that Taigong doesn't qualify for Grand Rider or, on the contrary, that Taigong couldn't be summoned as such due to Noah holding that title at the time.[citation needed] Nevertheless, in Taigong's current form, even his final Ascension may not be at the level of a Shenxian. However, he still regards it as an astonishing Saint Graph.[5] Furthermore, Ptolemy claims that Taigong Wang is a monster no less than Heracles and Achilles.[15] Sugitani Zenjubou describes Taigong Wang as one of the greatest tacticians ever. That fangshu of his has gotta be at least as strong as the Buddha's protection.[17] In terms of raw combat ability, Taigong Wang is considerably stronger than Theseus.[18]
Combat[]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Riding (A+ Rank): Taigong Wang can freely ride even Divine Beast class species, but when asked about the Dragon Kind, his answer is "You're asking for too much!".[1][2] In battle, he can ride Sibuxiang, a Divine Beast with the ability to fly.[6]
Personal Skills[]
- Primordial Art of War (A+ Rank): Taigong Wang is credited with devising and utilizing tactics and strategies before military arts were established as a studiable discipline. Two out of the Seven Military Classics of ancient China (the Six Secret Teachings and the Three Strategies of Huang Shigong) are authored by him.[1][2]
- Enforcing the Investiture of the Gods (B Rank): His state as the one carrying out the Investiture of the Gods. Super effective against divinity and demonic traits.[1][2]
- Thought Key (EX Rank): Taigong Wang is a disciple of Yuanshi Tianzun, the supreme being in Taoism, therefore, he's a Taoist. He has a Thought Key from the Far East's Thought Magecraft, which is completely different from Western magecraft. He uses this Key for what he calls Xian Arts and Fangshu (Tao Arts). He's a figure from the 1000s BC, meaning he's able to access even the Privileged Domains of the Thought Foundations, so the magecraft he uses should be called Thought Magecraft from the Age of Gods.[1][2] His spells include:
| Spell | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Privileged Domain - Forced Connection (特権領域・強制接続?) | Great Xian Arts[4] (Shenxian Level)[7] | Taigong Wang's World Egg.
|
| Earth Evasion Spell (土遁の術, Doton no Jutsu?) | Xian Arts[11] Fangshu[13] |
A spell that enables super high-speed group transportation and is referenced many times throughout the Investiture of the Gods.[11] Taigong Wang claims that he is incredibly proficient with them and that he knows over two hundred of variants of them. Furthermore, he can make untold combinations of them, making it impossible for an enemy to adapt to it even after seeing them multiple times.[12] However, he can't use it frequently because it consumes a fair amount of magical energy.[11] The main variants that he has displayed are:
|
| Spirit Origin and Spiritual Core Analysis | Fangshu[4] Xian Arts[4] |
Taigong Wang was able to initiate remote contact with Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya's Spiritual Core to analyze it in real-time. Thanks to this spell, he was able to determine her true origins. Taigong describes it as a "finnicky" spell that can only be executed when a lot of conditions are met.[4] |
| Air Walking | Fangshu[6] | While Taigong Wang can't fly, he can use a spell to let people walk on air.[6] |
| Anchored presence | Fangshu[9] | During his summoning in Tunguska Special Territory, Taigong constantly used fangshu to bend the rules repelling Human Heroic Spirits inside Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya's Reality Marble. However, he barely avoided getting repelled, causing his Magical Energy and overall strength to be greatly diminished.[9] |
| Genetic Analysis (遺伝子解析?) | Fangshu[11] | After trying a few Taoist Arts, Taigong was able to determine that not a single animal or plant inside the Tunguska Special Territory had the ability to grow, learn, or reproduce. They were all siblings born from the same mother, Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya. While they did have reproductive organs, they were only for display.[11] |
| Barrier | Unknown | Taigong can cast barriers capable of blocking Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya's bullets.[12] |
| Wind Sorcery (風の妖術か?) | Unknown | With this spell, he's able to temporarily limit the mobility of Burko, Dobrynya Nikitich's mount.[6] |
| Healing | Unknown | Taigong can heal wounds caused by Ibuki-douji's fake Noble Phantasm.[6] He also provided support during the battle against the Beast of Cherishment, healing everyone's exhaustion.[12] |
| Presence Concealment | Unknown | Taigong Wang has shown the ability to conceal his presence, allowing him to enter Ibuki-douji's detection range without her noticing.[8] |
| Illusions | Unknown | Taigong Wang is able to make illusions of himself with their own mass, life-force, magical energy, and even Servant aura.[12] |
Noble Phantasms[]
Taigong Wang's first Noble Phantasm is Sibuxiang. It is a constantly active Mount Noble Phantasm with the ability to cover himself in a gigantic cover of magical energy as dragons do, shapeshift, fly, and sometimes even burn down the enemy troops. While classified as a Divine Beast, other Xians also claim that it is a species of dragon.[1][2]
Taigong Wang's main offensive Noble Phantasm is God-Striking Whip, an ability regarded as the source of his Enforcing the Investiture of the Gods Skill. However, the true source of the attack is undisclosed. Some speculate that it might be a Shenxian-level magecraft attack fired after using his Thought Key to momentarily connect to the Privileged Domains of his Thought Foundation. Another possibility is that he might be borrowing power from his alive Shenxian self. Either way, when its True Name is released, a supersized God-Striking Whip falls from the sky, piercing the land along with the enemy.[1][2]
On the other hand, Taigong Wang possesses two Anti-Beast Noble Phantasms designed with Daji in mind.[3][12] Firstly, there is Great Demon Sublimation – Investiture of the Gods, a Bounded Field that is fine-tuned to be extra effective against Daji's reincarnations.[3] It uses his Thought Key to cast an incantation where he invokes Yuanshi Tianzun and proclaims himself as someone equally powerful to a Shenxian. While it has the power of the Twelve Golden Immortals, it had no effect on Tamamo Vitch Koyanskaya whatsoever due to her true nature being independent from Daji.[12]
Taigong Wang's second Anti-Beast Noble Phantasm is Yuxu Embodiment – Enforcing the Investiture of the Gods.[12][13] While it also involves activation through a Thought Key, it works differently to the previous one. Whereas the first Anti-Beast Noble Phantasm is supposed to hit the target on the inside, the second attacks her from the outside by empowering Taigong's allies. While it had some effect on the Beast of Cherishment, it was less than 10% of the effect Taigong had intended.[12]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Taigong Wang was designed by Oyo in Fate/Grand Order. His scenario writer is Hikaru Sakurai in Fate/Grand Order.[2]
He was first introduced as one of ten Servant silhouettes during the Fate Project New Year's Eve TV Special 2020. He was the last of the ten to be released in December 2021. During an interview, the interviewer asked if the silhouette was the recently mentioned Count Cagliostro, but Takeuchi denied the speculation. Nasu mentioned that Taigong Wang's design was "wonderful" and that the character would be released before the end of 2021.[19]
Comments from illustrator[]
"If I recall correctly, the prompt was "a bum who, unlike Merlin, doesn't realize he's a bum". I thought a good visual identity for that would be someone who has serious conversations through a grin that makes them less believable, so I drew him with a constant smile on his face, if memory serves me right. I could predict he'd have at least one meathead moment, so I designed the God-Striking Whip to look as painful as a blunt weapon can get. My favorite part of the profile I received is where it says he doesn't consider Sibuxiang a dragon. Being Sibuxiang must be stressful." (Oyo)[2]
Notes[]
- ↑ In LB7, there is a game fight where U-Olga Marie fights the seven Grand Servants. The gameplay scene is meant to serve as an interactive representation of the dream where U-Olga Marie regains some of her memories prior to being attacked by Kukulkan and Tezcatlipoca. The seven Grand Servants featured in Gameplay are: Grand Saber Artoria Avalon, Grand Lancer Romulus-Quirinus, Grand Archer Super Orion, Grand Rider Taigong Wang, Grand Caster Merlin, Grand Assassin First Hassan, and Grand Berserker Tezcatlipoca. However, these game enemies are only placeholders for the actual Grand Servants that Olga defeated. For example, First Hassan, Super Orion, and Romulus Quirinus had all discarded their Grand Servant status prior to that fight. Furthermore, Kinoko Nasu explains that Tezcatlipoca appearing as Grand Berserker was just a hint that he had held that rank prior to King Hassan stepping down. Artoria Avalon being Grand Saber was also discarded in the LB6 storyboard.
