Dead Apostle Ancestors
Tsukihime (2021)

The Dead Apostle Ancestors present at the "French Incident".

The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors (死徒二十七祖, Shito Nijūnanaso?) are a grouping of twenty-seven Rank IX Dead Apostles. The very apex of all Dead Apostles, the title represents their way of being.[1]

The Ancestors have existed for three thousand years. They are primarily individualistic, with the exclusion of the five representing the League of the Age of Gods (神代連盟, Jindai Renmei?), also known as Elder Title: League of the Age of Gods (神代連盟(エルダータイトル), Erudātaitoru?), and not all of the Ancestors are enemies of mankind.[1] The original twenty-seven were those who were able to escape their existence as "emergency rations" for the True Ancestors. As of the modern day, there are the "elders" of the BC era and the "upstarts" of the AD era.[2]

As of modern day, some positions have been rendered empty, the total verified being twenty-one as of the 2010s AD. Their complete defeat is an irregular occurrence. Two are sealed by the Holy Church, but such a process takes one hundred years to accomplish for a single Ancestor. Considering this, it's easy to see how irregular Shiki Tohno's defeat of Vlov was.[1]

Thirteen years before the events of Tsukihime, Elesia being chosen as Roa's new body caused her to awaken at age 12, become a vampire, take over her village (which was also Noel's hometown) with a group of her Dead Apostle comrades, and eventually become a center figure of what would be called the French Incident.[3][4]

The rank of Ancestor only exists in Tsukihime Worlds, so the grouping is not present in Fate Worlds. The Dead Apostles who would make up the grouping still exist in Fate Worlds, but their activities and statuses may differ. In Fate worlds, Michael Roa Valdamjong does not have his fated meeting with Arcueid Brunestud[5] and had his soul burned away by Edmond Dantès in battle,[6][7] Zepia Eltnam Atlasia never becomes the Night of Wallachia and remains director of Atlas as of the present day,[8][9] Gransurg Blackmore is destroyed between 300 AD and 500 AD,[10][11][12] Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg does not become a Dead Apostle but becomes immortal through other means,[13] and Fabro Rowan doesn't become Nrvnqsr Chaos.[14] Their rank reaches that of Superior Dead Apostle.

Idea Blood[]

Idea Blood: Hemonomic Principle (原理血戒(イデアブラッド), Ideaburaddo?) is the blood that makes an Ancestor an Ancestor, said to be the "mandate (戒め, Imashime?) of the Original Cause (大本, Ōmoto?, "Root/Origin") engraved upon their soul". A "Truth" that they have each attained, the worldview that makes up the foundation of their "thirst". It can be called a Dead Apostle's thesis, purpose for living and their undying curse. A singularity that paints over the planet's physical laws just by circulating blood. Wherever an Ancestor asserts their Idea Blood becomes their territory, subject to the influence of their Principle curse. Arcueid compares it to a "crown" as the inheritance of the Idea Blood will raise the inheritor to a Rank IX Ancestor regardless of their original rank.[15][16] The inheritor must possess a "millennium-class foundation" for it to function properly and be able to create and use their Bounded Field,[15] typically inherited by a Rank VIII Successor created by the previous Ancestor.[17] Typically a lesser Dead Apostle of a few hundred years, such as the former Rank VI Vlov Arkhangel, would be crushed by the curse of the Idea Blood, but he was able to withstand it due to the combat experience he had cultivated in his capacity as a knight of the dark ages in the medieval era and his own tenacity, which defeated the Curse that encompassed the entirety of his flesh. A pride on the level of a mere twenty years surmounted a madness that exceeded a thousand years. Properly speaking it was not something that Vlov could withstand, but thanks to a technique given to him by a "certain Dead Apostle" as well as his desire for revenge against "that person" he managed to retain his sanity until the end.[15][18]

The Idea Blood remains after the defeat of an Ancestor. Idea Blood can be utilized to facilitate magecraft, such as Ciel using Chromclay Petastructure's Idea Blood to utilize a variation of Chromclay's Bounded Field Cathedral and using Be'ze's Idea Blood to actualize the spell Calvaria's Star.[19][20][21] Ciel also gains Vlov's Idea Blood after killing him in her route, but she cannot facilitate magecraft with it, because the foundation of his Idea Blood is not mature enough to create a grand thaumaturgy from it, let alone weave a new one.[21] The Idea Bloods can be temporarily transformed into Magical Energy Reactors in order to replenish her own mana, though the cost comes at her own humanity. She can also only use them for a short time; Vlov's Idea Blood is estimated to only last three minutes before it becomes exhausted.[21]

Each Ancestor has a Principle (原理, Genri?) associated with them. It is a sort of curse that manifests as a unique power distinct from their other properties as a vampire.[16][1] The Principle is linked to the Idea Blood, and is granted to the Idea Blood's inheritor. It is also possible for new Idea Bloods to be created, as Magi who became Dead Apostles and then later became Ancestors are those who created their own Idea Blood through a vast amount of time and research.[16] According to Mario Gallo Bestino, most of the Ancestors' Principles originate from something that the individual vampires studied when they were human, and after they became vampires, such Principles become their "purpose for living" and path to obtaining true immortality.[22]

First announced in 2012, Kinoko Nasu stated the designs for the list of Ancestors was only half complete and that some had been removed due to restructuring for the remake of Tsukihime.[24] As of 2021 following the announcement of Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon-, Nasu stated that they had officially updated the list of Ancestors. Due to the increasing scope of abilities since the release of Fate/stay night, such as the world-threatening antagonists of Fate/Grand Order, the level of power to be made into a top rank Ancestor in the original release was lacking in comparison. The Ancestors of the original release who were deemed "relatively amazing" were those who were cut, Nasu deciding that "having decent strength and abilities doesn't cut" for the new standard of Ancestors. Taking the Remake's final scope into consideration, Nasu compiled the members to be removed, the members to be added, and the existing members to be upgraded. He regrets not having made them stronger in the original release.[25]

    [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors, p.100

    The Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors
The 27 individuals who are the apex of Dead Apostles. It is a title that represents their way of being. Though exceptions like the "League of the Age of Gods" of the five old-timers do exist, each is said to be fundamentally individualistic, while not all of them are enemies of man.

In their three thousand year long history some seats have emptied, and apart from those six that are Offenbaum's - Vlov's parent's - "idea" as well as the ideas of 「ripening」,「castle, therefore kingdom」,「sword」, and then the「melting」and「four limbs」 that are sealed by the Church, the remaining ones whose existence has been verified number twenty-one.

Though it takes the Holy Church a hundred years from preparation to execution in order to seal a single ancestor, they are thought to have succeeded only twice. Considering this, it's easy to see how irregular Tohno Shiki's defeat of Vlov was.

  2. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Rank IX Vampire: Ancestor, p.100

    Rank IX Vampire: Ancestor
The old Dead Apostles who broke free from their role as emergency rations and achieved victory in their struggle for independence as wholly distinct beings. A crimson stain that fell from the moon onto the earth. Long-lived beings who take in the life of humans and give rise to Rank Ⅵ Dead Apostles. Said to have established the structure of vampire society that exists to this day.

Their lifescale differs on an individual basis, but they can be categorised into the "elders", active from before the Common Era, and the "upstarts", whose activities began in the Common Era. Vlov, having killed the Ancestor that had been his parent of the last hundred years, became one such new "upstart" Ancestor.

  3. [v] Tsukihime Material I - CHARACTER Profile: Ciel, p.14-21

    • Gender: Female
    • Age: 18 (estimated)
    • Blood type: O
    • Height: 165cm
    • Weight: 52kg
    • Birthday: May 3rd
    • Alignment: Lawful Evil (Good from an objective perspective, but Ciel considers herself evil)
    • Likes: Spicy food, volunteer work, tinkering, puppies
    • Dislikes: Lazy lifestyles, vampires
    • Natural enemy: None in particular (she’s an all-rounder)

Comment from the illustrator: One of the main heroines in this game. Arc’s narrative foil. While she’s the Tsukihime heroine with the biggest variety of outfits, she isn’t particularly fashionable, which fits with her unaffected and sincere personality. She doesn’t stop getting into battle after battle, to the point it feels like all of her CGs are fight scenes. I made her more sprites in cute poses to compensate that.

Explanation: Birth name: Elesia. A girl born in the French countryside. Being chosen as Roa's new body caused her to awaken at age 12, become a vampire, take over her village, and eventually become a center figure of what would be called the French Incident. But after being defeated by Arcueid, Roa transferred to the next incarnation and the corpse taken to the Curia revived as Elesia. The girl, now immortal for as long as Roa is alive, discarded her name, was baptized as Ciel, and joined the Church as a vampire hunter. In order to one day die as a human.

Sensing Roa's reincarnation, Ciel assigned herself alone to Souya town to punish him. She lives a double life, steadily getting rid of the constantly proliferating vampires by night, and infiltrating a school by day to investigate and observe her Roa body candidate, Toono Shiki, eldest son of the Toono family. Despite her suspicions about the assignment of her pupil Noel, she tries to use Shiki to seal and/or destroy Roa, but things don't go as planned.

One of the story's heroines. She looks about 16-18. She's poses as upperclassman in Shiki's school but is actually a Holy Church Executor who came to Souya after Roa. The people of the Church call her by the pejorative name Quinze. Although she explains their secrets to Shiki as he gets involved in the situation, the mystery woman doesn't tell him a thing about herself. She's Lawful Good. Extroverted, timid, and active. Has a generally quiet and caring personality. However she's also nosy and curious, and can't leave lazy or depressed people alone.

The character whose personality best fits the big sister archetype. She takes cares of people and does anything they ask. She's satisfied with her class representative-like position... but, things get different if she grows affectionate to the person she's helping. Her teasing can get mean-spirited. Maybe she just likes troubling her loved ones.

However, that's all just the base Ciel. She uses a different persona as an Executor, so she can become a cold-blooded machine to fulfill her objectives if necessary.

    Blackmore Cemetery [Site]
    The cemetery from Gray’s hometown.
The land protected by Bersac Blackmore.
Originally, the land was inhabited by a family of magi that manipulated spirits, and regarded birds as sacred. The name Blackmore is apparently drawn from a powerful Dead Apostle connected to this family. Though the Dead Apostle in question perished some two thousand years ago, the family took his name as a sign of respect for him. At this point, that family’s original name is no longer known.
At any rate, that family has now become one of gravekeepers, and though temporarily, they have been entrusted with the remains of King Arthur.

Q: Is Zelretch's name that well known?

Nasu: Old bloodlines teach their children his name, and even young families have heard that "in the Clock Tower the great magician who led the World of Magecraft into battle long ago is still alive". Those who rise to the rank of Cause may eventually hear of another Magician by the name of Yumina.
Takeuchi: Is Zelretch still a vampire in Fate worlds?
Nasu: No, but he's got something along the lines of immortality all the same.

    [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Hemonomic Principle, p.100

    Hemonomic Principle
Idea Blood. The quality of the blood that makes the Ancestors what they are, and a foundational commandment etched on their soul.

The Dead Apostles who inherited this blood would always rise up to become Ancestors no matter their rank; Arcueid compared it to a "crown".

On the other hand, a millennium-class foundation is needed for the Hemonomic Principle to function, and even if a Dead Apostle with hundreds of years of activity were to inherit it they would be crushed by that curse. Properly speaking it was not something that Vlov could withstand, but thanks to a technique given to him by a certain Dead Apostle as well as his desire for revenge against that person he managed to retain his sanity until the end.

    Rank VIII Vampire: Successor
A talented vampire chosen by an Ancestor as their own successor. A prince or princess, as it were. Among the Ancestors are also some who were captivated by beings that were not vampires and unexpectedly raised them to this rank.

Assuming a minimum of two for each Ancestor, there are more than fifty Rank Ⅷ individuals. Some of them are even said to have been created in imitation of the True Ancestors. Vampires of this rank are mighty, surpassing Vlov - who achieved entry into the Twenty-seven Dead Apostle Ancestors - in terms of their fundamental reserves.

    Calvaria's Star
A halo deployed in the stratosphere, blazing with focused sunlight.

A reflector created with magecraft. The 50km long, 10km wide blade of light beaming towards the surface can be compared to an aurora possessing mass, or a guillotine of light. It is High Thaumaturgy that Ciel came up with after defeating the Ancestor who was her sword mentor; apparently she uses his Idea Blood to initiate it.

After firing at full power against Arcueid the remaining magical energy was used to launch one last shot, and it was this move that turned the tables in the endgame.

  20. [v] Tsukihime Material I - GLOSSARY: Cathedral (Bounded Field), p.98

    Cathedral (Bounded Field)
A phase-transforming, isolation-type bounded field developed to contain Rank Ⅸ Dead Apostles.

It originally belonged to the Ancestor signifying kingdom, and was a wall with a 30km diameter that isolated everything it enclosed from the outside world. Compared to the original, Ciel's version is a conceptual barrier that can only contain a single instance or kind of object.

On the other hand, it possesses a space distortion function that the original lacked, allowing the user to alter the size of the space within at will. As this High Thaumaturgy demands a special sort of magical energy to be used, it cannot easily be used repeatedly.

    本来は王国を現す祖が所有していたモノで、直径三十キロメー もの壁で囲った内部を外界と遮断するが、シエルの物はオリジナルに対し、対象物を一個ないし一種封じ込める概念的な結界となっている。
