Minamoto-no-Raikou/Ushi Gozen (源頼光/丑御前?),[1] Class Name Rider (ライダー, Raidā?), is the Rider-class Servant summoned by Yui Shousetsu in the Waxing Moon Ritual of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Minamoto-no-Raikou summoned as a teenager, the time of her life when she was a monster. The period where she was a guardian of the human realm and weapon of apparition slaughter devised by her father Minamoto no Mitsunaka, before she had any of the emotions of a human girl. In this state, her True Name is Ushi Gozen.
She answered her Master's summons due to her doubts and empathy concerning the distortions in the world that arise from her non-human nature taking on a human form. Unfortunately, her quest for answers led her to a single, tragic solution: destruction. Regardless of how many times she is summoned, her resolve remains unwavering.[2]
Appearance[]
Rider's voice is heavily distorted when wearing her armor.
She possesses a tall, imposing figure while wearing her bulky black armor resembling Settsu Armor Kumano. The sode pauldrons are detached and hover near her shoulders. The dō cuirass bears the emblem of the Takeda clanWP and is adorned with purple feathers and bright cyan accents. Long black shideWP trail from her back.
Underneath her armor Rider has a short, slender build and dark, chin-length hair. She wears a black bodysuit with cyan accents similar to the armor's.
Personality[]
Ushi Gozen initially pretends to be Raikou, even going so far to tell her own Master that she is Raikou. Under this act she is devotedly loyal to Yui Shousetsu, as well as cold and ruthless toward her enemies. Ushi Gozen drops the charade once her armor is destroyed by Saber, after which she often breaks into mad laughter and demands that others worship her divinity.
She wishes to fulfill Yui's wish of fixing the world, but interprets it very differently than how Yui does: Ushi Gozen plans to "fix" the world by destroying it.
Role[]
Fate/Samurai Remnant[]
Abilities[]
Ushi Gozen is an Oni child daughter of Gozu Tennou, the god of Jetavana, also known as Indra.[1] Kiso Yoshinaka claims that Rider must not be loosed upon the World. While he doesn't know her True Name, both his body and Soul have felt that she is an oni. He states that if she were a normal oni he wouldn't be concerned, but she isn't. She is a wholly evil being that would lay waste to the world if left unchecked.[6] However, when she was summoned by Yui Shousetsu, she claimed that her True Name was Minamoto-no-Raikou. Due to this, not even her Master was aware of her full capabilities. Furthermore, Ushi Gozen implies that she is weakened while pretending to be Raikou, as it prevents her from killing all her enemies.[1] When summoned as an Avenger, this is represented by a Skill named Lone Warrior. Ushi Gozen's armor conceals her identity through false parameters. It is also a shackle and a cage for suppressing her destructive impulses.[9] Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro regards Rider as the very pinnacle of mystic power and the slayer of untold masses. However, it is unclear if he was aware of her true identity.[6]
According to Yamato Takeru, they observed an unusual intensity of Magical Energy surrounding Rider during their initial encounter, prompting their hypothesis that she may be drawing the energy from a Spirit Font.[4]
Combat[]
She is capable of producing lightning for her attacks, implying that she may possess a skill similar to Raikou's Mana Burst (Lightning), though this is unconfirmed. Her incarnation as an Avenger notably has the personal skill Mana Burst (Tempest), implying it to be the source of her lightning. [9]
Armored[]
When pretending to be Minamoto-no-Raikou, Ushi Gozen's body is modified by her skill Divine Manifestation and covered by a black armor.[10] The SodeWP floats around the main body and can rearrange according to the movement of Rider. It also launches projectiles attacks coming from it.[citation needed]
When Rider and Jeanne d'Arc crossed paths in Chapter V, Yui Shousetsu told the former to fall back because she could kill Jeanne at any time, so there was no need to hurry. After they left, Jeanne apologized to her Master, telling him that she was waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack Rider, but she couldn't see an opening. Chiemon dismissed her, claiming that she would be no match for Rider, as he is aware that an Oni skulks within her Minamoto-no-Raikou armor disguise.[1]
Miyamoto Iori was able to defend himself from over a dozen of Ushi Gozen's blows before being disarmed. Right before Ushi Gozen could finish him off, he surprise attacks with three explosive magical gems. Although they granted him an opening to fall back a few meters, they did not have any effect on Ushi. After Iori summons Yamato Takeru, the two Servants are seemingly even matched in close-range combat until their fight is interrupted by Jeanne d'Arc.[3] After witnessing Takeru use their Special Technique - Eight-Current Raging Storm for the first time to kill Koga Saburo's Great Orochi, the Raging Tempest, Rider tells her Master that retreating may be in their best interest. Yui agrees, claiming that Takeru seems like trouble, and that they should have cut Iori and Takeru down before they found their full strength. However, when Chiemon questioned Yui if they retreated because they were scared of Takeru's Noble Phantasm or because Rider is simply inadequate for the task, Yui replied that she simply judged it was not the right time to kill them. She tells him to not misunderstand, and that Rider and her are completely superior to Takeru and Iori.[5]
In Chapter V, Yamato Takeru and Miyamoto Iori defeat Rider and Yui Shousetsu. After Takeru disarms Rider, they strike her with a long range attack, destroying her armor and revealing her true form.[1]
True Form[]
In this form, Ushi Gozen wields six spider-like legs formed by the remnants of her armor. She uses them to jump and fight, and they can release powerful lightning attacks. According to Yamato Takeru they could burn and blacken Edo if she was left to her own devices.[1]
Even after losing her connection to the Spirit Fonts, Ushi Gozen was so powerful that Yamato Takeru and Miyamoto Iori couldn't damage her, making the former consider that she might be invulnerable. Even after Kiso Yoshinaka arrived to assist them, Ushi was still capable of holding her own against all three of them until she started to weaken from lack of Magical Energy. When they wounded her enough to make her kneel, Takeru attacked her with Amenomurakumo-no-Tsurugi. Surprisingly, Takeru's Noble Phantasm only destroyed Ushi Gozen's weapons. Since Ushi was still alive, Takeru had to finish her off with a regular swing of their sword. In another route, Ushi Gozen is overpowered by Takeru and Iori without the assistance of Yoshinaka. In this timeline, Amenomurakumo-no-Tsurugi was powerful enough to kill her with a single blow.[1]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Magic Resistance (B Rank): Resistance to Magecraft that renders incantations under three lines ineffective. It would be difficult to break through even with greater magecraft or rituals.[10]
- Riding (EX Rank): The ability to expertly ride mounts. An atypical skill, it allows the user to ride even massive Divine Beasts.[10] Ushi Gozen has had access to different mounts:
- Kyōgoku
- Ox-King's Huge Divine Messenger
- Great Orochi, the Raging Tempest: During the Waxing Moon Ritual, Ushi Gozen was able to seize control of Koga Saburo's eight-headed snake and ride it herself.[5]
- Mad Enhancement (EX Rank): In concert with Divine Manifestation, this skill was kept hidden from even her Master. Increases some parameters. Rational conversation is seemingly possible, but reaching a mutual understanding is extremely difficult.[10] After revealing her True Name, not even the combined power of three Command Spells were capable of stopping her rampage.[1]
- Divine Manifestation (A Rank): A similar yet distinct skill to Oni-kind Demon. It is a composite of skills like Divinity, Shapeshift, and Monstrous Strength. When manifested as a separate entity from Minamoto-no-Raikou in life, she still looked just like her other self. In this work however, the skill caused her physical appearance to change.[10] Kiso Yoshinaka claims that Rider's power rivals that of gods, and that she is a being who cannot be easily controlled by men.[7]For this reason, Ushi Gozen was immune to Tsuchimikado Yasuhiro's mind control Spell.[1][10]
Noble Phantasms[]
Ushi Gozen wields Doujigiri Yasutsuna as her primary weapon. The sword is certainly one part of her other Noble Phantasm, however, it wouldn't suffice to deal with a Spirit of Ibuki-douji's caliber.[8]
Ushi Gozen uses Ox-King Storm Call - The Inescapable Net of Heaven when Gameplay Affinity Skills Fulgurant Slash is activated.
Her main Noble Phantasm is Ox-King Reversal - Frenzied Tempest, a giant divine mount whose power is momentarily amplified by Gozu Tennou. Everything in its path is pulverized by its enormous mass, thunderbolts, and raging tempest winds.[citation needed] According to Yui Shousetsu, it would be capable of destroying not just Edo, but all of Kanto. Furthermore, summoning it enabled Ushi Gozen to snatch control of all the Leylines in Edo from Yui, which allowed her to stay materialized even after cutting her connection to her Master. Due to this, sealing the four Spirit Fonts supplying the beast with Magical Energy diminished its power considerably.[1]
Even in this state, it was still powerful enough to survive a direct hit of Kiso Yoshinaka's Asahi Shogun.[1] However, it still managed to push it back a few meters, turning the tide in the protagonist's favor.[1][11] In another route, Miyamoto Musashi is tasked with holding it back while the others fought Ushi Gozen.[1]
Fate/Grand Order profile that shows she has the same Noble Phantasm when as a Avenger. Which confirms that she possesses Ox-King Reversal - Wicked Treachery
Gameplay[]
Ushi Gozen has 3 Affinity Skills she can use as a playable character, with a fourth one being unlocked upon being permitted to use their noble phantasm..
- Genji's Arms Mastery : Increases the number of normal attacks and enhances heavy attacks for a set time.
- Beckon Kogyoku : Summons the trusty steed Kyogoku to fight as one for a short time.
- Fulgurant Slash: Unleashes a flurry of attacks with a sword enveloped in black lightning and magical energy from the shoulder plates.
- Thunder Release: Unleashes the power of Gozu-Tenno that slumbers within, increasing the Noble Phantasm Gauge.
Development[]
Unlike other characters in Fate/Samurai Remnant, Rider's voice actor was not announced prior to release to avoid spoiling her identity.[12]
Creation and Conception[]
Rider was designed by Raita Honjou and illustrated by Rei Wataru in Fate/Samurai Remnant.

A warrior clad in black armor wielding an elongated sword who has formed a contract with Yui Shousetsu. The two attacked Miyamoto Iori after he was acknowledged as a Master, but were stopped by the summoned Saber.
Sudden Treason
Perhaps due to being under someone's control, Rider turned against Shousetsu, who was unable to hide how shocking the Servant's sudden betrayal was.
Evil Ogre
Rider is being pursued by Rogue Saber for being an Evil Ogre that bears a grudge against the world. However, this does not seem to worry Rider in the slightest.
Performance of a Lifetime
It turned out that Rider turning against Shousetsu was merely a ploy to outwit Tsuchimikado and steal the Waxing Moon's Vessel. Rider was an exception capable of resisting Tsuchimikado's spell, much like the boss of Babyloni-ya and Circe.

At the height of a harrowing battle with Saber, Rider's shattered armor revealed the figure of a young female individual. With a callous smile, she proclaimed her True Name to be Ushi Gozen, child of Gozu-Tenno.
Minamoto-no-Raikou was a demon child born in the city of Heian. Her demonic aspect has detached and become an independent entity. Wishing to fulfill Shousetsu's desire to set this crooked world aright, Ushi Gozen summoned the divine messenger in Asakusa. Letting her wild instincts rise to the surface, she began to rampage across Edo in the name of righting the world.
The Edge of Destruction (Rat)
Ushi Gozen rampaged alongside the divine being, turning her back on Shousetsu's commands and threatening to engulf all the provinces of Kanto in a sea of flames. But by severing the leylines, and with the assistance of Rogue Saber, she was stopped before she could wreak widespread devastation. At the end of the fierce battle, she was defeated by Saber's Noble Phantasm, Sword of Heaven: Amenomurakumo-no-Tsurugi. Ushi Gozen enjoyed one final, peaceful reprise in the divine light of Saber's blade before fading away.

[] Fate/Samurai Remnant Logbook - Biographies: Kiso Yoshinaka [T] Sheathed in White Armor
An armored Rogue Servant who appeared in Koishikawa riding a gray horse. By Lancer's estimation, he is a Saber.
Pursuing the Evil Ogre
Rogue Saber is chasing after Rider and Lancer, calling them the "Evil Ogre" and the "Cohort of the Evil Ogre" respectively. Exactly why he is after the two of them remains a mystery.
As Fate Wills
Rogue Saber fought alongside Miyamoto Iori and Saber at Todoroki. Unlike other Rogue Servants, he has a tendency to appear in unexpected places. And like Rogue Berserker, he possesses the strength to move freely, without being bound to a leyline. Though he has not learned Rider's True Name, he has declared Rider's supposed unholy aura to be that of an evil ogre who bears a grudge against the world, and therefore intends to vanquish the malevolent Servant.
Unclouded Blade
When the powerful spell had taken control of many of the Servants, Rogue Saber retained his sanity and met up with Iori and Saber. Though he himself did not understand why he was unaffected, he pledged to lend Iori his aid.
Destroying the Evil Ogre
Rogue Saber came to assist Iori and Saber, who were struggling in combat against the divine being controlled by Ushi Gozen. His Noble Phantasm, On Arorikya Sowaka, gave Iori and Saber the chance to turn the tide. Ushi Gozen ultimately fell to Saber's blade. Having continued to fight for so long while separated from his Spirit Font, Rogue Saber finally became unable to maintain his Spirit Origin. After seeing Ushi Gozen's defeat with his own eyes, he faded from sight.
Asahi Shogun
Rogue Saber's True Name is Kiso Yoshinaka, the hero who defeated the Taira clan's forces at the Battle of Kurikara and the conqueror of the Hokuriku region. He did well in climbing the ranks, even being asked by the former emperor to guard the capital, but was ultimately defeated by Minamoto Noriyori and Minamoto Yoshitsune, who were under orders from their brother, Minamoto Yoritomo. After fighting in countless battles with his wife, Tomoe Gozen, by his side, he had her removed from his forces at the end so that she might survive, and he then died at the Battle of Awazu.
Tomoe Gozen had ogre blood in her veins, though not the savage kind. Rather, she was descended from good ogres who revered peace and harmony. It was precisely because of his love for his wife's good nature that he detested and sought to slay the "Evil Ogre" who was operating from the shadows in Edo.
