Vivian (ヴィヴィアン?, also spelled "Viviane"), the Lady of the LakeWP (湖の乙女, Mizūmi no Otome?), is a fairy known for bestowing Excalibur upon King Arthur. She is an alternate good personality of King Arthur's evil sister, Morgan le Fay.[3]
Profile[]
Background[]
Vivian was a Great Mother class fairy born in the inner sea of the planet.[4] Also known as the "fairy princess of the lake,"[5] Morgan le Fay was considered her counterpart, Vivian embodying goodness compared to Morgan's evil. This duality was also reflected in the nature of Excalibur itself.[6] It was believed by some that Merlin himself taught Vivian magecraft,[7] and they also had a love affair.[3]
It is thought Morgan inherited Vivian's Authority.[4] However, Vivian is in truth Morgan's alternate personality.[3] Morgan is described as being like she has three people within her. Having started with the "innocence of a fairy", she became "as magnificent as a warrior maiden", and "then suddenly possessed the brutality of a witch."[8] Vivian is one of these three personas. Morgan developed these three personalities as a way to reconcile the three roles enforced on her by her supernatural birth: Morgan the human, Artoria's caring sister; Vivian the fairy, the Lady of the Lake; and Morgan le Fay, the embodiment of Britain and holder of its Mystery.[3]
Vivian is also known as Nimue (ニミュエ, Nimyue?),[3] the fairy who raised Lancelot and gave him his sword Arondight.[9]
Vivian granted Artoria Pendragon Excalibur[5] and Rhongomyniad[10] after the loss of Caliburn. Vivian also became her guardian.[5] Near the end of Artoria's reign, when Merlin fled to Avalon to escape Vivian after scorning her, Vivian imprisoned him in a tower where he remains even now.[7][11]
As Artoria's dying wish, Excalibur was returned to Vivian by Bedivere.[5] According to legend, Vivian was one of the fairies who arrived to bring Artoria to Avalon after she died.[12]
The name of Summer Morgan's Noble Phantasm, Summer Pool Dozmary, indicates that Vivian's lake is Dozmary PoolWP.
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Vivian embodies goodness.[6] Ayaka Sajyou as a child reminded Arthur Pendragon of Vivian's kind and gentle voice.[13] However she can still be angered. When Merlin scorned her, Vivian's response was to pursue him as he fled to Avalon and then lay a trap for him that imprisoned him in a tower for eternity. Merlin describes himself trying to escape the "vicious claws of the witch".[11]
Role[]
Fate/stay night[]
Vivian is briefly portrayed accepting the returned Excalibur at the end of the Fate/stay night manga adaptation of the Fate route.
Fate/strange Fake[]
Francesca Prelati and Francois Prelati refer to their teachers in magecraft as spirits who took interest in and watched Artoria through "water-viewing whispers," the duo feeling that Artoria's misfortune would upset their teachers. Merlin is noted to have taught their teachers magecraft.[14] While Prelati's teachers would have wanted to help Artoria in the Fourth Holy Grail War, they would have been unable to as there is not enough Mystery left in the world for them to reach Japan from Britain.[15]
The Caster summoned by Richard I's Noble Phantasm Rounds of Lionheart is named ...ue (…ュエさん, …yue-san?), with the first half of their name obscured. The visible second half is spelled the same as Vivian's alternate name Nimue (ニミュエ, Nimyue?).[16]
Other appearances[]
In Fate/Grand Order, Summer Archer Artoria named her Noble Phantasm after Vivian, Excalibur Vivian.
Abilities[]
Vivian is a Great Mother, a being equivalent to a Divided Spirit of the Earth's Soul and comparable to personified nature gods in scope.[4]
One receiving the blessing of Vivian possesses the ability to walk atop any body of water.[17] Her blessing on Lancelot in the form of the Knight of the Lake Skill allows him to temporarily add a + to any parameter other than Luck.[18]
The spell that she used to trap Merlin in his tower for the rest of time is known as the "Garden". A magic tomb bearing the inscription "Only those free of sin may pass", it is a powerful Bounded Field magecraft from the Age of Gods that is unable to be handled by anyone but the embodiment of Mystery.[3]

Excalibur’s appearance after being corrupted by evil. Excalibur functions by converting its user’s magical energy into offensive power. Because of this nature as a “sword that amplifies”, when Saber was blackened, Excalibur blackened with her.
In Arthurian legend, King Arthur received Excalibur from Vivian, a fairy of the lake. Just as the fairy Vivian who embodied goodness had her polar opposite in the evil Morgan, so too does Excalibur have the possibility of embodying both good and evil. However, whether Excalibur is filled with good or stained by evil, the fact that it is the strongest holy sword does not change.黒エクスカリバー
