Xuanzang SanzangWP (玄奘三藏WP, Genjō Sanzō?), Class Name Caster (キャスター, Kyasutā?), is a Caster-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order.

Profile[]

Identity[]

Xuanzang Sanzang, also known as Sanzang Fashi (三藏法師, Sanzō Hōshi?), was a Buddhist priest of the Tang DynastyWP in 7th Century AD. Travelling through the Silk RoadWP in search of the original Buddhist scriptures, it resulted in Xuanzang heading to India from Central Asia, before bringing back to China from there sutras amounting up to 657 items and becoming the founder of the Chinese Faxiang Buddhist sectWP.[1][2]

Journey to the West[]

Xuanzang is also known as a key characterWP in the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. Receiving a command from GuanyinWP, this beautiful monk, while riding Bai Long (Yulong) – the son of the Dragon King of the West SeaWP that transformed into a white horse – had Qitian Dasheng (Great Sage Equal to Heaven) Sun Wukong (Sun Xingzhe), Tianpeng Yuanshuai (Marshal Canopy) Zhu BajieWP (Zhu Wuneng) and Juanlian Dajiang (Curtain-Lifting General) Sha WujingWP (Sha Heshang) as her disciples, and she headed for India without ever losing heart in the face of the many monsters obstructing her path.[1][2]

In “Journey to the West”, it is said that Xuanzang lived in the heavens originally as Jin Chanzi (金蝉子, Konzenshi?, lit. "Golden Cicada"), a disciple of Shakyamuni, but she fell into secular life because of a “certain incident” being the impetus. In other words, Xuanzang Sanzang is the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi.[1][2] (It is because of this that the Demon KingWP and the monsters are enticed by and tried to eat Xuanzang’s flesh again and again during the story of “Journey to the West”. If one eats Xuanzang, one gets to acquire a tremendous power associated with eternal youth.)[1]

Xuanzang Sanzang had a Prophecy of Future Enlightenment and became the Buddha of Glorious Sandalwood, so she is originally not a being that can respond to a person’s summoning, even with the one done by Chaldea’s system. Materializing and being successfully summoned at this time is only because of these exceptional circumstances. That alone, the phenomenon called the Incineration of the Human Order, must be perceived as an extremely serious threat.[1]

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Xuanzang is curious, confident, and has a love for adventure. Although being gracefully silent and faithful as monk, she wears the desire to challenge herself on her facial expressions, and it does not conceal her unyielding nature. Xuanzang is a rather upbeat person, often times looking on the bright side, cracking jokes, and she speaks in a way full of energy. She wears her faith like a badge, mentioning the Buddha countless times, thanking and praising him. She even gives offers to have others become a Buddhist. Despite being so cheerful, she sees herself as an idiot who is prone to mistakes, but because of her faith, she believes that despite that, all are given guidance equally.[1]

At first glance, one would believe Xuanzang is confident in herself, but in truth, her confidence stems from her faith in BuddhismWP, so she remains humble despite her confidence. She is also not self-aware of herself as a talented student. Although she remembers only a faint bit concerning her experience of being kicked out of the heavens for having deceived Master TathagataWP, the root of her is humble nature is permeated with the depths of her memories.[1]

Xuanzang appears strict, but is gentle at heart. Especially to the weak, she is earnestly kind, and if a person is troubled, she will not forsake them. Because she is not thoughtless, she is extremely positive thinking oriented since she has an unshakeable belief that she will be rewarded for persevering hardship. Taking into consideration that she is never mistaken regarding the "Way of Man", she often becomes lost during her travels. And because she gets lonely when she becomes lost, she is quick to cry. She tends to quickly change the topic when this relience on others is brought up.[1]

Regarding her Master, Xuanzang recognizes them as a disciple, an additude she extents to other companions aswell, and tries to teach them in the ways of Buddhism. Should the 'disciple' show growth within the teachings of Buddhism, she will reward them appropiately, showcasing some of her gentle nature.[1]

Xuanzang has no wish for the Holy Grail because she believes a disciple of Buddha has no need of such a thing.[3]

Role[]

Fate/Grand Order[]

Sanzang of the Stars Goes to Tianzhu[]

Chaldea attempted to summon her, but Sanzang refused, believing she reached enlightenment and abandoned all earthly desires. Recognizing her selfishness as a human, Buddha sent her to a minor Singularity that recreates the events of Journey to the West. With her memories sealed, Sanzang believes she is still journeying west to Tianzhu under the decree of the emperor of the Tang Dynasty collecting scriptures. She subdued a demon to be her guide, but it fled later. As a result, she is lost for several days, during which her horse was eaten.

Sanzang finds Ritsuka unconscious stuck between rocks. After regaining consciousness, Ritsuka asks her where they are. She answers they’re at the border between the Tang Empire’s realm and Gaochang at the foot of the Five Elements Mountain. Believing Buddha brought them together, she introduces herself, and Ritsuka does the same. Freeing Ritsuka, Sanzang explains her circumstances before finding them. Ritsuka tells her about the Incineration of Humanity and Singularities. While she finds it grandiose and far-fetched, Sanzang nonetheless believes Ritsuka as she thinks it’s Buddha’s guidance. After making Ritsuka her disciple, she remembers experiencing the journey to Tianzhu before, but cannot remember the specifics. She believes her meeting with Ritsuka is a challenge from Buddha to send them back to Chaldea. Sanzang and Ritsuka then begin their journey west.

Later in a desert, Sanzang remembers she had three disciples. The pair then hear a pig squealing. They find the source to be Zhu Bajie (played by David) stuck under a rock. Sanzang rescues him, and Bajie tells her that another potential disciple is also struck under a rock. Sanzang saves him, and he introduces himself as Li Shuwen, playing the role of Sha Wujing. The group is then surrounded by monsters that Bajie and Wujing encountered before. After killing the monsters, the group agrees they need a horse. Ritsuka notices what they think is a red horse which turns out to be Lu Bu playing the role of the White Dragon Horse. Due to his frightening disposition, Sanzang refuses to use him like a horse until Ritsuka hands her a scripture he was protecting. Riding on White Dragon Horse’s shoulders, she learns that the scripture was held by monsters, and there must be more. After reading the scripture, she declares to her disciples that they’ll collect the rest on their way to Tianzhu.

Continuing their journey, Wujing asks Sanzang what happened to her previous disciples. Sanzang recalls dismissing them for a reason yet unknown to her. She then gets hungry; Ritsuka says White Dragon Horse found a cave up ahead. Before entering, Sanzang asks Ritsuka who Mash is, as they were calling her name when they were stuck under the rock, and if she’s important to them.

Sanzang smells the scent of fruit in the cave, so she figures it’s a food storage. As she prepares to eat a peach, though, White Dragon Horse stops her saying it’s a trap. Golden Horned King and Sliver Horned King (played by Stheno and Euryale respectively) then confront the group, welcoming them to the Lotus Cave. Realizing it’s a trap, the group prepares to fight when the kings call upon Bronze Horn (played by Medusa). Sanzang tells Wujing not to be fooled by their tricks when his will to fight falters upon seeing Bronze Horn, whom he thinks should be saved. Then, after forcing Golden Horn and Silver Horn to retreat, the group eats themselves full of the food in the cave and takes its treasures. Sanzang lets Bronze Horn go, seeing that she relinquished her evil ways. She also decides to write her a letter of recommendation to the librarian at Daci’en Temple. After Bronze Horn leaves grateful to Sanzang, The group continues onward to Tianzhu.

Red Boy (played by Mordred) confronts the group, intending to stop their journey. Sanzang asks her why she stands in their way when she reformed and surrendered herself to Bodhisattva. Red Boy answers her father, Ox-Demon King, will praise her if she returns with their heads. Sanzang finds her attitude inspiring and prepares to fight her, saying she can reform afterward. After being defeated, Red Boy hands Sanzang a scripture. Sanzang stops her from leaving, realizing she is going toward neither the Fire Cloud Cave nor the Sky Scraping Cave. She tells her to go home if she wishes to see her father so much, but Red Boy refuses because her mother, Princess Iron Fan, terrifies her.

Coming to the Flaming Mountains, Wujing warns Sanzang of a nearby presence. Entering the mountains to lose their pursuer, Sanzang tells her disciples they need to cross the mountains to reach Tianzhu. Stating the fire was once a leaping flame from the Eight Trigrams Furnace in heaven, she claims it’ll die if walked through, believing it to be a trial from Buddha. Psyching herself up, she walks through the fire, but the heat and smoke suffocate her. Saved by White Dragon Horse, Sanzang declares the mountains not to be the Flaming Mountains she knows. Suddenly, the group is attacked by their demon pursuers.

After the demons are slain, Helena Blavatsky suddenly appears and shoots the mountains. Sanzang gets upset upon learning Wujing and Bajie were only traveling with her half-heartedly to fight strong opponents. Ritsuka tells her the scriptures are the key to the journey, according to Romani Archaman, when a spear-wielding woman appears. She tells them the Flaming Mountains are a test. Sanzang finds her familiar yet cannot remember. The woman tells her that said memory is inside the scripture she possesses. She calls Sanzang a once pure and holy woman but now despicable and mediocre with no sense of self-sacrifice and bereft of tolerance and benevolence. Thus, she claims Sanzang is no longer fit as Qitian Dasheng’s master, shocking Sanzang. After the woman leaves, Bajie asks Sanzang if she knew her, but she can’t remember clearly. When Wujing identifies her the woman as Nezha, Sanzang remembers they need the Banana Leaf Fan, Princess Iron Fan’s Noble Phantasm, to cross the Flaming Mountains.

Leaving the mountains, the group goes to the Banana Leaf Cave to get Banana Leaf Fan. Sanzang is confident they’ll be able to convince Princess Iron Fan since they didn’t kill her son. However, Princess Iron Fan (played by Florence Nightingale) immediately rejects their request since there are no reports of illness around the Flaming Mountains. She then accuses them of spreading disease and threatens to cook Bajie, forcing the group to fight her.

After defeating her, the group returns to the mountains with the Banana Leaf Fan. Sanzang is concerned that it looks like a certain holy sword though. Calling it Excalibanana Leaf Fan, she extinguishes the flames, and the group crosses the mountains.

Later, the group meets the Ox-Demon King (played by Artoria Alter). Sanzang apologizes for stealing the Banana Leaf Fan from her wife and returns it to her. As a sign of gratitude, the Ox-Demon King gives Sanzang the scripture she possesses. She then shows the one Nezha gave her when she visited earlier. She claims Buddha gave her a mission, revealing he sealed Sanzang’s memory of the realization of the transient nature of the five desires in the scriptures. The sixth scripture is meaning: the attachment of the heart. If Sanzang takes it, she’ll recover her lost enlightenment and her journey will end. Sanzang, however, denies her journey ends here as she's yet to reach Tianzhu. The Ox-Demon King angrily declares that ending her journey now is Buddha’s mercy. Sanzang asks what will happen to her disciples. The Ox-Demon King answers they’ll continue to Tianzhu, which will return them to their world. She tells Sanzang that she also has a place to return to. Sanzang misinterprets this to mean her in Chang’an. She still wants to continue her journey, saying she has accomplished nothing. While appreciating the scriptures in her possession, she isn’t ready to recite them correctly. The Ox-Demon King responds it doesn’t matter who recites the scriptures and decides to use force to make Sanzang realize that. Recognizing the upcoming battle is hers, Sanzang tells her disciples not to help her as she thinks it’ll incite Buddha’s wrath and prevent their return to their world. Her disciples however declare they’ll stay and help her fight the Ox-Demon King.

After being defeated, the Ox-Demon King confesses she complied with Budhha in exchange for him removing Princess Iron Fan’s disinfectant ware. She then warns Sanzang that she won’t have Buddha’s protection. Sanzang doesn’t mind though, claiming it’s what makes a journey a journey.

Coming to River Ganges, the group sees Arjuna and Karna on its shores. Nezha arrives and explains they’re Underworld guardians. Sanzang knew Nezha would come and realizes Arjuna and Karna embody her fear of going to the outside world. She then remembers the circumstances of her failed summoning by Chaldea. Saying Buddha would see the Incineration of Humanity as just another ripple of existence, Sanzang realizes her summoning failed due to her selfishness as a “human being“. She confesses she doesn’t want to leave her disciples anymore, nor does she want to die alone anymore. However, even if alone, she would still continue her journey. Preparing for her final trial, Sanzang rejects Nezha’s assistance as she recognizes Nezha as Buddha’s messenger sent to help her perceive him. After Nezha leaves, Sanzang wonders about the possibility of summoning her as a Servant. The group then fights Arjuna and Karna.

After they’re defeated, Sanzang sees Ritsuka can rayshift back to Chaldea now. She confirms Wujing’s suspicion that she’ll stay behind and set off on another journey. Calling him Li Shuwen, she tells him that his levelheadedness kept her from crying during the journey. After Li Shuwen disappears, she tells David that she admires his ability to face every dilemma with a light heart, without panicking or getting discouraged. Realizing she can’t be like that, Sanzang tells David that she’ll think of him when she’s in trouble. After David disappears, Sanzang agrees with whatever Lu Bu said, even though she can’t understand him. She tells him he was great to ride, and she’ll have a saddle ready for next time before he disappears. Lastly, she tells Ritsuka that if she ever regains Buddha’s guidance and manifests as a Servant in the future, she’ll take them as her disciple again. Because of that, she won’t say goodbye, instead, she’ll recite a blissful sutra so Ritsuka will have perfect health before they’re rayshifted back to Chaldea.

Sixth Singularity: Camelot[]

Sanzang is summoned into the Singularity six months before Chaldea's arrival. Crossing Ozymandias's desert, she tried to speak with him, but Nitocris barred her. She then met Tawara Touta, and made him her disciple. They eventually reached the Holy City of Camelot, where they live for two months. They left though when Sanzang decided to continue her journey despite enjoying the place, being escorted by the Knights of the Lion King. However, they returned upon seeing nothing existed beyond the desert. Then, coming to a fort, Sanzang picked a fight with the knights stationed outside. Touta tried looking for her, but was captured by Lancelot and his forces.[4]

While searching for Touta, she gets lost, and monsters attack her. Ritsuka’s party saves her, and she tells them about her circumstances. She joins them after Ritsuka agrees to help save Touta, declaring Ritsuka to be her disciple.[4] Arriving at the fort where Touta and Hassan of Serenity are being held, the group decide to break in before Agravain returns to torture Serenity again for information. Hassan of the Hundred Faces uses Zabaniya: Delusional Illusion to distract the guards, while the others sneak into the dungeon.[5]

Inside the dungeon, Sanzang starts to believe Touta was executed until his cell is found in a hidden passageway. Broken out, Touta introduces himself at Sanzang’s behest. He says he was protecting Sanzang, though she insists he was escorting her. She reminds him he is her disciple, saying disciples protect their mentors. Touta reminds her what exactly happened at the fort, and how he was captured by Lancelot while looking for her. He then guides the others to where Serenity is while Sanzang rides on his shoulders.[5]

They find Serenity chained to the wall of a torture chamber by Agravain’s Iron Punishment. Ritsuka undoes her chains since they have an adverse effect on Servants. Agravain soon arrives and repeatedly sends knights at the group. He asks Sanzang if Goddess Rhongomyniad is wrong, but she isn’t able to answer right away. He then offers her a seat at the Round Table to replace the now-gone Gareth. Sanzang admits she is conflicted on who to side with: Goddess Rhongomyniad, Ozymandias, or the Saracens. But while she thought Camelot was nice, she cannot agree with the Knights of the Round's tactics. Agravain replies the Saracen refugees are free to seek sanctuary in Camelot, and the forces of Camelot will stop warring with them if they give up on the Holy Land. Sanzang asks him why there is an "end” at the other side of the desert. She also asks what Goddess Rhongomyniad's goal is, and if she even is a Heroic Spirit anymore after losing her human heart long ago. Agravain merely sends special knights modeled after the enraged Lancelot. After the group kills the knights, Serenity activates Delusional Poison Body, forcing Agravain to retreat. With the knights knocked out by the poison, the group escapes the fort.[5]

Returning to the Western Mountain Village, everyone has a feast at night thanks to Touta’s Inexhaustible Bale. Sanzang makes Rice Balls for the children using her palm strikes. She also makes Arash her disciple, designating him to be Bajie like she designated Touta to be Wukong.[6]

The next morning, the group realizes they’re seriously outmatched in terms of power and numbers. They also recognize they need someone to fight Gawain since their assault on Camelot will always fail as long as he’s at the front gate. Sanzang suggests recruiting Lancelot after Bedivere mentions him as the only knight who could match Gawain in a fight. Touta, however, puts that idea down and conks Sanzang on the head for thinking they could easily turn a Knight of the Round traitor. Serenity suggests going to the Shrine of Azrael to ask for the First Hassan, whose location she was tortured for. Cursed Arm agrees with the idea and tells the others to return to the eastern village.[6]

Two days after Hundred Faces split off from them to gather more troops, the group returns to the village. After some rest, they leave for the Shrine. As they near the shrine, they rest for the night.[7]

Sanzang is journaling what transpired before she goes to bed when Mash comes to speak with her. She praises Chaldea's FATE System as summoning Heroic Spirits without distortions like the Singularities is normally impossible. Mash tells her Chaldea repeatedly failed to summon Heroic Spirits until the Grand Order started; the second of those successfully summoned lent their strength to Mash. Sanzang tells Mash that Heroic Spirits find it miraculous to be summoned as Servants. But she finds it cruel because a Servant's temporary existence means they’ll always be outsiders. Mash then asks her motivations for going to Tianzhu. Sanzang answers that it was to receive Buddha’s scriptures, gain a reputation for herself, retire, and live out her days peacefully in Leiyin Temple. While those motives are true, she just doesn't know when to quit. Normally, she is a cowardly, selfish crybaby, but she’ll readily obey if the voice of the Buddha commands her, which Wukong once said was her inner voice. She does whatever she genuinely believes to be the right thing to do, suspecting Mash is the same way. Mash then asks her why she joined the group. Sanzang confesses she doesn’t dislike Goddess Rhongomyniad, and she isn’t interested in fighting against Camelot or Ozymandias. She finds both Ozymandias and Goddess Rhongomyniad the same in that they both strive to protect their own people. Understanding both sides’ wrongdoings, Sanzang wasn’t able to take a stance until she met Ritsuka and Mash. She wishes to join Chaldea after the era is restored. She then goes to sleep after Mash.[7]

The group enters the Shrine after defeating its ghost guardians. Hassan agrees to help against Goddess Rhongomyniad, but he decides to punish the group for entering the Shrine. He’ll forgive their transgression if they pass his trial. He then takes control of Serenity to fight the group as part of the trial, which they pass. Hassan agrees to aid them against Goddess Rhongomyniad once the group learns the truth of her, Ozymandias, and the Incineration of Humanity. He directs them to the Atlas Institute in the desert, where they can learn all these answers.[7]

The group returns to the eastern village, only to find it besieged by forces led by Tristan and Lancelot. At Cursed Arm's behest, Sanzang, Touta, and Bedivere go to rescue the villagers. She, Touta, and Cursed Arm eventually arrive to help Bedivere and the others against Tristan. However, they all bear witness as Rhongomyniad destroys the western village. Tristan then leaves, warning Rhongomyniad will strike the eastern village in five minutes. While the others evacuate, Arash successfully counters Rhongomyniad with Stella.[8]

The following day, the village holds a funeral for those lost, including Arash. Cursed Arm reveals Hundred Faces evacuated most of the western village before it was destroyed. He implores Ritsuka to head for the Atlas Institute before Camelot attacks the village again. In the meantime, he and the other Hassans will gather their forces for the assault on Camelot, and spread word of Ritsuka to the other Saracens. He agrees with Romani to rendezvous in the village for final confirmation on the assault once Ritsuka returns. Ritsuka's party then leave for the desert.[8]

Using a map given to them by an agent of Hundred Faces, the group search the desert for the Atlas Institute. Sanzang gets lost in the sandstorm, accidentally disturbing a sphinx nest. She wards them off, though, when the others find her. She then points out where the sphinxes were; Mash recalls Ozymandias’ divine beasts mark the Institute’s location. Sanzang guides them there when they’re met by Lancelot and his knights, who were sent to capture them. The group fight, but they retreat when Lancelot proves too strong. A giant illusion of Nitocris then manifests, distracting the knights enough for the group to escape. The knights give chase, only for both parties to run into a sphinx nest. After slaying the sphinxes, the group enters the Institute via a pitfall trap. There they are met by Sherlock Holmes.[9]

Sherlock leads the group to the central area, while they destroy any activated defenses. At the center, the group finds a still functioning Tri-Hermes. Sherlock uses it to learn Rhongomyniad's true form is the Tower at the Ends of the World, while the lance is a terminal to access its Authority. Goddess Rhongomyniad plans to use it to create an ideal world by gathering virtuous souls. According to Tri-Hermes’ calculations, Rhongomyniad can hold 500 souls. It is Camelot’s true form, where the selected are sealed away. They’re gathered as ideal examples of humanity’s virtue, and they will be sealed forever once Camelot returns to its true form. Touta assumes Goddess Rhongomyniad’s army will disappear along with the Tower, which Sanzang reluctantly agrees with him will stop the fighting between Camelot and the Saracens. Sherlock reveals however that upon the Tower’s completion, the Ends of the Worlds will consume the era. He also says the Singularity doesn't exist anywhere in the world. Sanzang realizes nothing exists beyond the desert is because the Singularity is already separate from human history. She agrees with Bedivere they need to invade Camelot before Rhongomyniad’s completion, but she wonders why Hassan didn’t tell them the truth in the first place. Touta assumes it was because Ritsuka needed to come to the Institute itself. The group then rush back to the surface.[10]

Returning to the surface, the group is confronted by Lancelot and his knights. He is eventually convinced by them to join their fight against Goddess Rhongomyniad. He then escorts them for half a day to a secret refugee camp for those unselected.[11]

There they find Leonardo da Vinci alive, having been protected by Lancelot back then. After Mash relays what they learned in the Institute, Da Vinci realizes Goddess Rhongomyniad intends to create an isolated space for the purest of humanity to continue existing following the Incineration of Humanity. Calling Goddess Rhongomyniad wrong for removing people’s choices, Sanzang suspects the Knights of the Round accepted her idea at the cost of their own identity because they believed in the former Artoria Pendragon. She wonders why Artoria became Goddess Rhongomyniad, to which Lancelot reveals she was already like that when she summoned the Knights of the Round. Da Vinci reveals Artoria became a Divine Spirit by holding Rhongomyniad too long. Lancelot suggests convincing Ozymandias to help when the group recognizes their forces aren’t enough. Da Vinci requests Bedivere goes to contact the Saracens. Ritsuka’s party then depart for the desert in Da Vinci’s newly built vehicle, the Bastiyan.[11]

Sanzang, Ritsuka, Mash, and Da Vinci ride in the Bastinyan while Touta and Lancelot and his troop follow on horseback. They eventually reach Ramesseum Tentyris. Da Vinci sends a message to Ozymandias, requesting he join them and to prepare for their arrival. While waiting for a reply though, a pack of sphinxes emerge from the temple gates. While Lancelot and his knights fight the sphinxes, the others enter the temple.[11]

Upon entering the temple, Sanzang senses it is the same as Camelot and suspects Ozymandias can achieve the same thing Goddess Rhongomyniad plans to do. Nitocris confronts the group, and she fights them to see if they’re worthy of an audience with Ozymandias. They defeat her, so she allows them to meet with Ozymandias. Sanzang calls him different from Goddess Rhongomyniad for prioritizing the lives of his people since that’s the best way for a country to prosper. But she reprimands him for abandoning that duty, and for isolating himself and his people because he cannot defeat Goddess Rhongomyniad. Ozymandias replies it isn't his concern what happens to other people. Sanzang becomes infuriated at him for this, calling him the same as Goddess Rhongomyniad. Her demanding he protect the world convinces Ozymandias to test the group’s strength and resolve to save the world. He pours some of his own blood into the Grail and drinks it to incarnate himself into Amon. However, he grants the name Amun-Ra onto Amon, temporarily turning him into a Divine Spirit. The group fights him, but the temple supplies him with infinite magical energy, instantly regenerating any wounds they inflict. They defeat him though, thanks to Sanzang unleashing her full power. Returning to normal, Ozymandias fights the group again with Nitocris to prove their worth as allies. After being defeated, he gives the Grail to Mash and agrees to lend his sphinxes for the assault on Camelot.[11]

Three days later, the group return to the eastern village. There they tell Bedivere and the Hassans that they have now Ozymandias’ support. Hassan of Serenity confirms they’ve gathered 17, 000 followers. Hundred Faced says there are 2,000 people in Camelot secretly supporting their rebellion. Sanzang and Touta then go prepare food.[12]

That night, Ritsuka finds Sanzang by herself as she writes in her journal. Sanzang proclaims it’ll be “Monk Sanzang’s Tortuous Travels“, the hundred volume set, stored in Chaldea. She then has Ritsuka sit next to her so they watch the view from the cliff with her. She confesses she joined the group because they were the easiest to understand. But since then she has decided to fight Goddess Rhongomyniad for her own principles. She tells Ritsuka that people aren’t all equal, but they all have possibilities, so she won’t approve of a way of life that takes that away. She then bids Ritsuka good night, saying she’ll make them her disciple when it’s all over.

In the wastelands near Camelot, the group reviews their strategy once more when Romani reports the city is prepared for them. Lancelot orders the allied forces to advance when a sandstorm created by Hassan suddenly appears from the north to envelop Camelot. With the storm making both sides’ archers useless, the allied forces advance onto Camelot as fast as possible.[13]

The allied forces soon become overwhelmed by Camelot's forces, unable to break through into the city. Sanzang tells Touta to move towards the wall near the front gate. As she prepares her Noble Phantasm, she confesses that she'll die as a result. After recalling meeting Ritsuka before, she uses her Noble Phantasm to destroy the front gate. Touta takes her to the west gate, and he vows to work in her stead. Understanding she already went to Tianzhu, Sanzang wishes to go to Chaldea. She wishes to take on new disciples and scriptures and disappears, thinking Buddha won't punish her for having such a dream.[13]

Final Singularity: Solomon[]

Xuanzang Sanzang is amongst the "Camelot" Singularity Servants to aid Chaldea against the Demon Gods Pillars.[14]

Summer Event: Dead Heat Summer Race![]

Sanzang is walking Chaldea's halls when she comes across Minamoto-no-Raikou remarking about how decency is being flouted. Raikou sees Sanzang's outfit, and finding it an affront to public decency, demands to know she is wearing a swimsuit indoors. Sanzang insists it's a manifestation of how good it felt to swim and cool off in the rivers during her journey to Tianzhu, though its lack of skin cover never crossed her mind. She then points out how Raikou's outfit shows her body, but Raikou is oblivious and considers it the emblem of purity. She also denies she is wearing a swimsuit underneath. She then demands Sanzang follow her if she wishes to reform, believing Buddha would want it as well. Sanzang agrees to join her, which overjoys Raikou that the monk will reform by helping her to preserve public decency. Raikou then makes Sanzang her partner in Ishtar's race, believing it to be the source of this summer's "indecency".

At the racetrack, Sanzang is excited about possibly finding a new disciple or sutra during the race. She is confused, though, about which way they're supposed to go. Ishtar then shows everyone the ritual tools, which are key to erasing the Singularity, and indicates a team is a legit participant. They’re designed to integrate into the vehicles, and any vehicle trying to race without them is automatically disqualified. After commentary on each team from Ishtar, the race begins.

A group of thugs soon appear before the racers. After the thugs are defeated, their leader, Atalanta, arrives. She considers the thugs to be her children to the racers’ confusion. Calling the wasteland the Atalanta Plains, she tells the racers that its roads lead to where she and her children planted Seed Apples. They are essential to her children‘s future, so she cannot permit them to be destroyed in the race. Everyone ignores her but soon learns she planted land mines to protect the seed apples. Atalanta is eventually defeated, and the racers move on to the next area.

The race brings everyone to an active volcano, where they meet Boudica at its crater. She offers to cook them something, only to turn hostile. Her hostility is due to what happened to Britannia and the fact she doesn’t have a playable swimsuit version this year despite modeling in one last year. She has become an Avenger, believing she must utterly break the racers’ spirits to protect her homeland. She will do so through a game of chicken to the mouth of the volcano, setting it up so the racers can’t cross the volcano until they beat her. The racers accept her challenge. Raikou and Sanzang nearly catch up to Nero Claudius and Artoria Alter when a volcanic bomb lands and spooks their horses. They then proceed to destroy the rocks still raining from the volcano, with Sanzang seeing it as a test from Buddha.

Eventually, the racers arrive at a river. Penthesilea appears and explains the more beautiful they are, the faster they will go. She introduces them to the judges: Mister B, who judges their personal beauty, and Leonardo da Vinci, who judges their vehicles’ beauty. Sanzang suspects Mister B to be possessed by a wicked spirit that she suggests punishing. Mister B gives her and Raikou a middling review in beauty, slowing them down like all the others except for Frankenstein and Helena Blavatsky. He then tries to catch up to Frankenstein and Helena and check more of them out when the others stop and beat him up, revealing him to be Blackbeard in disguise.

The racers soon enter the fourth area, which has breast-shaped hills. Artemis and her copies fire upon them, warning they cannot go through Artemis Valley as they please. She will allow them to pass if they can find the real Orion among his copies and return him to her. Raikou exposes the bikini beneath her uniform, prompting the Orion to flutter towards her. Sanzang realizes they can just bring all the Orions to Artemis, hoping one is the real one, as Artemis never said to only bring her the real one. But to her surprise, some of the Orions flutter toward her. She thinks it's because of her virtue, oblivious to Orion's preference for large breasts. Eventually, the team captures all the Orions and tries bringing them to Artemis. But the Artemises attack them for treating her darlings harshly. Raikou and Sanzang defeat them, leaving only one. Orion, now terrified of Raikou, jumps into the arms of Artemis, who's overjoyed that he's the real one. Sanzang gives the headband Sun Wukong wore to Artemis to put on Orion, even teaching her the words that make it painfully tighten. But later at a pit stop, she admits to Raikou it is an imitation of the one Lady Kannon gave her, so it doesn't last long.

The racers reach the final area, a bridge over a large ravine, with the Ishtar Temple at the finish line. With victory on the line, Raikou and Sanzang encourage their steeds to go even faster. However, everyone is sent plummeting when someone cuts down the bridge.

Summer Event: Death Jail Summer Escape[]

The racers find themselves at the bottom of the ravine. They’re attacked by the Hessian Lobo security system, which overwhelms them. Medb then arrives and arrests the racers for placing weird textures on her land without permission. The racers fall unconscious and wake up in Medb’s prison. They find out that their powers are negated within prison. Medb tells the racers that she locked their vehicles up somewhere outside the prison after sensing a strange power from them. The racers are then brought to their cells, where they soon meet Ishtar’s avatars. They then encounter Carmilla working as a prison guard. Carmilla determines they're too weak to escape and opens their cells.

In the courtyard, the racers meet Gorgon, who's only brought out of solitary confinement for exercise. She agrees to tell them about the prison if they help with her exercise. However, the fight is soon interrupted by Florence Nightingale, who leaves after Gorgon says none of them are injured. Raikou deduces Gorgon is a projection of her real self inside her cell. Gorgon confirms this then reveals it's impossible to destroy the prison’s barrier from either the outside or the inside. However, the racers can take advantage of Medb’s overconfidence in her Prison Field to find blind spots to escape. Carmilla then brings the racers back to their cells.

The next day, the racers still haven’t found an escape route. They see Quetzalcoatl training other prisoners to be luchadors After some sparring, the racers are sent back to their cells. They then follow Ritsuka’s advice to dig their way out of the prison.

However, the racers' tunnels all converge onto Gorgon's cell, where she is chained there by divine steel. Gorgon asks the racers to stop Nightingale from spraying her with reptile sanitizer. But the racers remind her that they were never friends and that she only used them to vent her frustrations. Gorgon replies that she'll help them if they defeat Nightingale. After Nightingale is defeated, Nero Claudius determines they can use Gorgon’s acid to clear any obstacles that bar them while digging. Since they had a deal, Gorgon spews acid into special containers for each team.

Unfortunately, while digging, they discover the Prison Field extends underground. They return to Gorgon's cell, who seems to be enjoying their predicament. After venting their frustrations, the racers realize they have no choice but to kill Medb to disable the Prison Field. Gorgon reveals there was another prisoner who tried escaping by killing Medb. She defeated them and revealed she has a conceptual weakness to projectile cheese. But Medb is always protected by her warriors. Gorgon reveals Medb always takes a shower in her warden’s office at the same time every day. James Moriarty, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla point out they need someone intelligent as them and Charles Babbage, who also knows the prison’s layout if they want to successfully snipe Medb from outside her bathroom window. Gorgon reveals there is a prisoner who knows everything about the prison, despite being in solitary confinement. She then gives the racers general directions to that person's cell.

They dig into the prisoner’s cell, who turns to be Enkidu in tight restraints. Raikou asks them what they did to warrant their lengthy prison sentence and to be placed in tight restraints. Enkidu answers Medb arrested them on a trumped-up charge that they're a criminal mastermind. Raikou finds that even if Enkidu committed crimes, they cannot reform if they're bound as they are. Unable to overlook this, she then cuts Enkidu's restraints. Now free, Enkidu has the racers spar with them to see if they’re fully functional. Enkidu afterward then agrees to provide the racers with the necessary calculations. Carmilla arrives to feed them, and attacks everyone after seeing Enkidu unrestrained. After defeating Carmilla, Enkidu, Babbage, Edison, and Tesla make blueprints for their cheese-apult.

After building it with the materials Ritsuka provided, the racers use the cheese-apult to assassinate Medb while she’s in the shower. However, Medb kicks the cheese away thanks to training her body to automatically react to incoming cheese. Helena considers the Medb in this Singularity to be a little different from the usual Medb, almost as if she was optimized to protect her land. But it's also possible any Celtic woman can pull off what Medb just did if she trained hard enough. Enkidu reveals there is another way to remove the Prison Field, one only they know of. They reveal the control device for the Prison Field is a stone above the ground. The racers soon realize it’s in the statue of Medb in the courtyard. Enkidu then reveals there is a prisoner who is master of disguise that the racers can use to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field. The racers then dig their way to the prisoner’s cell.

They arrive in the prisoner's cell, only to find Carmilla there to their shock. They fight her, but in the midst of it, she turns into Nightingale. After being defeated, she reveals herself to be Yan Qing in disguise. He agrees to disguise himself as Medb to trick Quetzalcoatl into disabling the Prison Field in exchange for fighting him. But Raikou has him sit in the corner and lectures him until he gets sore. Afterward, Yan Qing (disguised as Med) gets Quetzalcoatl to disable the barrier underground, allowing the racers to reach their vehicles in the warehouse.

The racers escape to the outside, where Medb and Quetzalcoatl confront them. Medb deflects shots from X's cheese blaster and decides to execute the racers, accusing them of covering Connacht with textures of another place. The racers defeat Medb and Quetzalcoatl, then return to the race once they disappear.

After the race, however, an enormous storm moves toward the track as if it has a will of its own. Ishtar reveals this was her plan. Unbeknownst to the racers, their vehicles’ tires were carving magical energy into the Venus textures she placed on the land. She then reveals her temple to be a giant ATM called the Ishtar Quantum Power System. The racers confront her when the relics she had them install in their vehicle are suddenly removed. The relics converge at the Ishtar QPS, which gathers the magical energy expended in the race. At the same time, the relics were storing the heat created by the friction of the racers’ tires running across the Venus textures for each relic to reach an excited state. The purpose of all this was for Ishtar to create a new Gugalanna. After using the relics and the Ishtar QPS to do so, she declares she can use him to destroy the Singularity. Da Vinci points that would work, but it’d also destroy Connacht. The racers then fight Ishtar and Gugalanna before he’s completely formed, but they struggle against him. Quetzalcoatl then arrives to attack Gugalanna, revealing the her that disappeared before was Yan Qing in disguise. After she destroys Gugalanna, the racers and the race’s administrative staff get their picture taken by Georgios.

f Raikou and Sanzang won, Sanzang is confused when Raikou says public decency would've been disturbed if Ishtar's scheme succeeded., having thought it was about Gugalanna's reconstruction. Nonetheless, she enjoyed the race,  even if she didn't find out what Buddha's teachings were, nor saw signs of the gods' protection outside battle. But to Sanzang's confusion, Raikou takes off her uniform. Sanzang asks Raikou what happened to defending Chaldea's public decency. Raikou answers that their duty will continue until summer is over, but for now, she believes they deserve a break. She then expresses her intent to show off her swimsuit to Ritsuka and Kintoki. Sanzang is concerned, though, that Raikou's swimsuit figure will disturb public decency if she goes out into public. Raikou says they can look the other way since they're on break. Sanzang demands to know Raikou's true reason for becoming the Shadow Prefect. Raikou confesses she only wanted to keep "insects" away from her "children". She then goes out into the hallway with Sanzang unable to stop her. Sanzang chases after her when Raikou's footsteps quickly become far away.

Abilities[]

Sanzang vs Agravain's Knight

Sanzang battling Agravain's Knights.

Xuanzang makes use of mainly bare-handed techniques that appears to be taught by her teacher in the heavens. Also, she uses the weapons and techniques associated with Sun Wukong and her disciples (Sun Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang, Zhu Bajie's Nine-toothed RakeWP, and Sha Wujing's Monk's SpadeWP) although the person herself is not aware of this situation. Dr. Roman expressed jokingly that it may not be known that the fragmented thoughts of her disciples’ worries for their great teacher lurks within her Saint Graph.[1] She also wields a KhakkharaWP staff.

Class Skills[]

  • Territory Creation (A+ Rank): Creates a “Workshop” that is an advantageous position to oneself as a magus. Because she possesses A Rank in this, it is possible to create a “Temple”, which is superior to a “Workshop”. (Strictly speaking, because the orientation of her school of magecraft is different, the position created by Xuanzang Sanzang is not designated as a “Workshop”. Also, it excels in timeliness in regards to its creation, so the practicability of creating a position immediately = a powerful Bounded Field.)[1]
  • Divinity (D Rank): Xuanzang, who is destined to eventually reach the Buddhahood of CandanaśrīWP, the Buddha of Glorious Sandalwood, is endowed with the Divinity Skill.[1]

Personal Skills[]

  • Bewitching Rosy Cheeks (A Rank): A natural beauty that greatly attracts demonic entities and evil spirits. The higher this Skill’s rank, the more likely one is going to drag those with demonic qualities. Additionally, if one has the Divinity Skill, it becomes even more likely for that one to be targeted.[1]
  • Teachings of Tripitaka (A Rank): It represents Xuanzang’s way of being that shows the way a Tripitaka Master ought to be. The Buddhist scriptures were promoted to be the “treasury” of Sanzang’s; with this, the Buddhist scriptures took the name of the three branches of Buddhist sutras. It demonstrates a person having knowledge in the three branches of Buddhist sutras, or in other words, being a Tripitaka Master.[1]

Noble Phantasms[]

Xuanzang's Noble Phantasms are Five Elements Mountain - Buddha Palm and Vyākaraṇa - Buddha of Glorious Sandalwood.

Development[]

Creation and Conception[]

Xuanzang Sanzang was designed by Takeshi Okazaki in Fate/Grand Order.[1][2]

Takeshi said that the feminization of Xuanzang Sanzang was influenced by a drama masterpiece where Xuanzang was performed by Miss Masako NatsumeWP, he ended up arguing and drafting up to 3 or 4 designs. Although there are some divine articles as well as even more young Chinese characters, in the end he understood why this pattern was chosen when playing the scenario. Takeshi aimed to draw a character that wanted to be preaching, he certainly did not know that she would be preaching physically.[1]

Hikaru Sakurai is the scenario writer for her character.[1]

In the Chinese server, she is named Pilgrim to the West (西行者?) due to certain government policies regarding the depiction of historical figures. She retains her original name in the Taiwanese server.

The “edge of the world” that Sun Wukong once reached————that is, the very palm of a gigantic Shakyamuni, falls down from the skies and chastises the antagonists that shows contempt for Buddhism. The whole body of Xuanzang is wrapped in an aureole, and she temporarily attains a limited Buddha Mode. Although her offensive ability is not that much, she has high resilience by being able to repel most attacks, as well as repel mental interferences, push aside abnormal status attacks, and on top of that, apply a large recovery ability continuously around her own position. However, after using this, her entire Saint Graph will be destroyed and Xuanzang will disappear.

    Character
First Pronoun: atashi Second Pronoun: anata / anta / ** Third Pronoun: kare / kanojo / ano hito

    ○Personality
A bundle of curiosity. She loves adventure! A figure brimming with the spirit of inquiry towards the unknown with an unwavering self-confidence. Although gracefully silent as a beautiful and faithful monk, her spirit overflowing for a desire to challenge herself decorates her facial expressions, and it truly does not conceal her nature of having an unyielding spirit. “As long as there are the chirpings of adorable songbirds that signals the morning’s rise, and the guidance, compassion and divine protection of the honorable Buddha, my journey will not be hindered by anybody and everybody!”

She is confident in herself————or so it looks like with an open glance of her. As a matter of fact, the reason she is confident is in regard to the sacred Buddhism religion, so she does not believe even a little about herself as a great person and the likes. She is also not self-aware of herself as a talented student. Although she remembers only a faint bit concerning her experience of being kicked out of the heavens for having deceived Master Tathagata in the spur of the moment in the heavens, the root of her is humble given that it is permeated with the depths of her memories.

She appears strict, but her nature is gentle. Especially to the weak, she is earnestly kind, and if a person is troubled, she will not forsake them. Because she is not thoughtless, she is extremely positive thinking oriented since she has a belief that is unshakeable, called “being rewarded for persevering three times the hardship.” Taking into consideration that she is never mistaken regarding the “Way of Man”, she often becomes lost during her travels. And because she gets lonely when she becomes lost, she cries before long.

○Motivation · Attitude to the Master
She recognizes the Master as a “disciple”. Frankly, she is strict to her companion that she deemed as a “disciple”. Although, given that she expects a growth from them that progresses down the tough path of a “Buddhist disciple” sufficient to the point that they will receive the same reward like other disciples, when it sometimes come to it, Miss Tsundere Teacher here will be gentle either way.

    ○Dialogue Examples
“I’m Xuanzang Sanzang! I came into this world so I can guide you to the honorable Buddha. Ummm, my Class is Caster!”
“You have the honorable Buddha’s divine protection. Everything’s certainly alright!”
“Evvverything is as Buddha has foreseen!”
“Good thing. Listen. I am not mistaken. When I make a mistake, it is because I am a moron who cannot be helped. But the honorable Buddha, he does not make mistakes. Because weak people, foolish people, people who changed their ways, they equally all guide us the way.”
“… Uuu, if only Goku was here, something like this…”
    “Gone…”

    ○Character Image
A Buddhist priest of the Tang Dynasty in 7th Century AD. Travelling through the Silk Road in search of the original Buddhist scriptures, it resulted in Xuanzang heading to India from Central Asia, before bringing back to China from there sutras amounting up to 657 items and becoming the founder of the Chinese Faxiang Buddhist sect.

She is also known as a key character in the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. Receiving a command from Guanyin, this beautiful monk, while riding Bai Long (Yulong) – the son of the Dragon King of the West Sea that transformed into a white horse – had Qitiang Dasheng (Great Sage Equal to Heaven) Sun Wukong (Sun Xingzhe), Tianpeng Yuanshuai (Marshal Canopy) Zhu Bajie (Zhu Wuneng) and Juanlian Dajiang (Curtain-Lifting General) Sha Wujing (Sha Heshang) as her disciples, and she headed for India without ever losing heart in the face of the many monsters obstructing her path.

In “Journey to the West”, it is said that she lived in the heavens originally as Jin Chanzi (Golden Cicada), a disciple of Shakyamuni, but she fell into secular life because of a “certain incident” being the impetus. In other words, Xuanzang Sanzang is the reincarnation of Jin Chanzi. (It is because of this that the Demon King and the monsters are enticed by and tried to eat Xuanzang’s flesh again and again during the story of “Journey to the West”. If one eats Xuanzang, one gets to acquire a tremendous power associated with eternal youth.)

Xuanzang Sanzang had a Prophecy of Future Enlightenment and became the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit, so she is originally not a being that can respond to a person’s summoning, even with the one done by Chaldea’s system. Materializing and being successfully summoned at this time is only because of these exceptional circumstances. That alone, the phenomenon called the Incineration of the Human Order, must be perceived as an extremely serious threat.

    ○General Armaments
She makes use of mainly bare-handed techniques that appears to be taught by her teacher in the heavens. Also, she uses the weapons and techniques associated with Sun Wukong and her disciples, although the person herself is not aware of this situation. Dr. Roman expressed jokingly that it may not be known that the fragmented thoughts of her disciples’ worries for their great teacher lurks within her Saint Graph.

    ○Affiliated Characters
    The Enlightened One
There is always the Shakyamuni Buddha’s divine protection. Therefore, everything’s alright!

    Wukong
If you have time to come here, first add to your body a resourceful ability to find yourself a bride!

    Touta (Tawara Touta)
It’s Touta… hey, wait! It’s not good if you are not training diligently!

    Nezha
What? Lies. You, you are not Prince Nezha!
I wonder if Heavenly King Li Jing is in good health.
Eh, well, Wukong is not here… I’m telling you the truth. By some chance, did you lose to Wukong? Ahaha, you never change. You’re cute.

    Li Shuwen
You handle an excellent spear! I wonder if you can teach me your moves… eh? You want me to teach you? Gone?

    Asterios
You… hmmm. Good good, you look okay.
