Yagyuu MunenoriWP (柳生宗矩WP?), Class Name Stray Saber (逸れのセイバー?), is a Saber-class Stray Servant summoned in the Waxing Moon Ritual of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
Profile[]
Identity[]
- Main article: Yagyuu Munenori#Background
Yagyuu Munenori died in 1646, only 5 years before the events of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
This Servant is not the Tajima-no-Kami renowned in Proper Human History, but rather a "what-if" version of him from one possible eventuality. Specifically his current Spirit Origin represents what would have happened had he chosen to become the commander of the clandestine Yagyuu shadow ninja troop instead of the head of the Yagyuu clan.[1]
He materialized in Edo as the result of a Chain Summoning due to Takao Dayu's summoning of Miyamoto Musashi. He also mentions having meet a "flower at the apex of heaven", a title Musashi possesses, whom he fought to his death in another world, reaching out in his desire to fight them even if it lies in hellfire, implying that he is a younger version of Saber of Empireo that fought Musashi in the Shimosa Subcategory Singularity. This is something which Musashi of the Waxing Moon Ritual acknowledges, noting she doesn't have the same blade she used in their last duel, his swordmanship being just as magnificent she remembered it, and Munenori being different from the person he was "at that time".[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Saber describes Munenori's manner of speaking as both carefree yet dignified, making him very hard to read. He firmly believes that once drawn, a sword is nothing more than a tool for ending lives. However, due to his youthful Spirit Origin, he is quick to draw his sword with immense killing intent. Similar to his fellow swordsman in the "Entreat the Darkness" ending, Munenori regards himself as a "demon" who gave into his impulses and is guided by his desire to test his sword and fight.
Iori equates Munenori to the Moon reflected in water, visible but unreachable, his presence the same as an indiscernible flickering flame which hides the man's truth behind it.
Role[]
Fate/Samurai Remnant[]
While investigating a series of night murders in Edo, Miyamoto Iori encounters Munenori who has been summoned as a Rogue Servant. After briefly trading blows, Munenori reveals his True Name to cease hostilities and apologies for immediately attacking them, believing his "youthful Spirit Origin" as the cause. Iori and Saber briefly interrogate Munenori if he is the cause of the night murders but Munenori denies involvement. Saber and Iori both remain suspicious but allow Munenori to accompany and assist them in solving the case in order to prove his innocence.
Abilities[]
Regarded as the "peerless Edo Yayuu swordsman", Munenori without a doubt a powerful and skilled Sword Saint. However, he also believes his current Spirit Origin is "inexperienced and unenlightened" compared to his older self. Aside from his prowess with the blade, Munenori is also very perceptive and strategic. Sensing the remarkable bloodlust that laid within Miyamoto Iori in their first meeting, he chose to accompany Iori and Saber both as a method to waylaid suspicion and evaluate Iori's skills. Through subtle use of his second Noble Phantasm, he was able to deceive his allies into believing his mask of innocence. Despite this, he was eventually outed by Musashi, who already had experience with Munenori's tactics, and Iori, who refused to fully trust the man due to his unique presence.
Combat[]
He is a Saber-class Servant that has mastered the Yagyuu Shinkage-ryuu. Likened to wind sweeping away flower petals, his fierce swordplay scatters any enemy that stands before him.
In his first encounter with Miyamoto Iori and Saber, Munenori nearly decapitated the latter before former could even react. He was able to knock away Saber in an exchange of blows and easily contended with Iori's offensive immediately after.
Though he, alongside Yagyuu Toshiyoshi, was later defeated in a duel by Iori and Miyamoto Musashi, Musashi attributes the win to luck and states his swordsmanship was magnificent.
