Yamata-no-OrochiWP (八岐大蛇?) is a dragon god appearing in Japanese mythology.
Profile[]
Background[]
Known as the Great God of Mount Ibuki (伊吹大明神, Ibuki Daimyōjin?), Yamata-no-Orochi is a Divine Spirit referred to as "Japan's greatest Dragon of disaster."[1][2]
Detailed in the Suwa EngiWP, Orochi placed a curse on Koga Saburo after Saburou committed the crime of trespassing on Mount IbukiWP and destroying a serpent's nest, passed down in the Kouga-Mochizuki bloodline.[3][4] Allowing one to temporarily act as a Divided Spirit of Orochi to curse enemies to death, it was inherited by Mochizuki Chiyome despite not even being of Saburou's main bloodline.[3][4]
According to the Susanoo myth from the Kojiki and Nihon-shoki, it is said that Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who was exiled from Takamagahara, descended upon the province of Izumo, saved Kusanadahime who was offered as a sacrifice, and exterminated Orochi after getting it drunk. Susanoo-no-Mikoto defeated this large serpent (dragon) and obtained a divine sword from its tail. The sword's name is Kusanagi-no-Tachi. Also known as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, Amenomurakumo-no-Tsurugi, and Tsumukari-no-Tachi. Later, it was offered to the Atsuta Shrine and designated as one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan.[2][5]
Ibuki-douji, the higher order origin of Shuten-douji, is a Divine Spirit divided spirit of Orochi.[1] She is also known as Orochi's daughter.[3]
Appearance[]
Yamata-no-Orochi is described as an enormous monster. That monster was a red-eyed demon with eight heads and eight tails───a gigantic snake that boasted of a length spanning eight valleys and peaks.[2]
It has white scales when aiding Ibuki-douji, while appearing black or gray when channeled by Chiyome.

Abilities[]
Orochi possesses the ability to place a curse on an entire bloodline, torturing the mind and body of the possessor. Those that manage to control it actualize it as a powerful, undetectable poison.[3] The Orochi created from the mixture of the curse on Saburou and the influence of Shuten-douji, bearing the blood of Orochi, carries the power of only a single one of Orochi's heads, but still displays great power.[4]
Kusanagi was said to have been inside Yamata-no-Orochi during the Age of Gods.
