Yatagarasu (八咫烏?), real name unknown, is a magus acting as the caretaker of Haruri Borzak.
Profile[]
Background[]
Using Yatagarasu as her work moniker,[2] she is a magus belonging to the Clock Tower of the Mage's Association. Disliking the power struggles of the magi there, she remains distant from the Clock Tower's proceedings. With a youthful appearance and a storied history, the truth behind her real age is unknown.[1]
She has a relationship with the Borzak family, considering it her duty to care for Haruri Borzak as her ward after the death of Haruri's parents. After the death of Haruri's heretical grandfather, Odd Borzak, her family was killed by the Clock Tower, Haruri barely escaping.[1] She has some knowledge of Francesca Prelati, calling her a "monster."[1] She has previously worked with Sigma.[2]
Appearance[]
Yatagarasu has the appearance of a young girl. She wears elegant clothing that suggest the appearance of a "sheltered young lady from a good family," but has a crow always perched upon her shoulder that suggests she is something out of the ordinary. With a history of over eighty years, it is unknown if she retains a youthful appearance despite her advanced age, or if she is the youthful inheritor of the knowledge of her predecessors through her Magic Circuits.[1] The crow upon her shoulder may be more than it appears, Haruri believing that her master's parting words could be coming from either her master or the crow itself.[1]
Personality[]
Yatagarasu speaks in a cunning manner, and she speaks like an elderly person despite her apparent age.[1] While acting as Haruri's caretaker, she remains neutral towards Haruri's goal of obtaining revenge. While pragmatically recommending Haruri remain hidden or join the El-Melloi Classroom, she keeps herself from feeling any true compassion for Haruri's situation.[1]
Role[]
Lord El-Melloi II Case Files[]
Yatagarasu is one of the individuals invited to participate in the auction for Mystic Eyes on the Rail Zeppelin in 2003. Not a central part of the plot, she is one of several unnamed background characters.[3][4]
Fate/strange Fake[]
Yatagarasu also participated in the Rail Zeppelin auction in the World of Fate/strange Fake. Witness to the Servant who interrupted the proceedings and the actions of Lord El-Melloi II, they left an impression upon her.[1]
Several years before the True and False Holy Grail Wars, Francesca Prelati invites Yatagarasu and Haruri to participate. Yatagarasu declines to participate, and she discusses Haruri's intent to participate. Warning Haruri that Francesca most likely reached out to her due to her known grudge against the Association, that doesn't dissuade her from her goals. She warns Haruri of the danger of Servants after having witnessed one previously, that they cannot simply be used as a tool for her revenge. Recommending staying in hiding or joining the El-Melloi Classroom under Lord El-Melloi II, Haruri declines both options. As they part, Yatagarasu's last words to her are, “No matter how prepared you are to break... Preparation won’t mean a thing in the face of someone who was broken from the start.” Haruri is unable to tell if the words are coming from the girl or the crow perched upon her shoulder.[1]
Abilities[]
Yatagarasu is called a "crow-tamer magus."[1]
Development[]
Yatagarasu is not mentioned within the original Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files novels. She is an original character appearing in the anime Lord El-Melloi II Case Files: Grace Note.
